Word of the Month: Acceptance Dear Families, When you next visit DWS, please notice the most beautiful bulletin boards that have been added to our walls. Thanks to the PTO, for fi- nancially supporting the sup- plies, our own art teacher, Mr. DeRosa, spent most of his April vacation here, working with our custodians to build and create about 15 new bulletin boards. Your studentsart work will be proudly displayed on these boards. This is just one more example of how dedicated our staff is at DWS. We al- ways put children first, and go above and be- yond to make things #1 and first rate for our students. Thank you so much, Mr. DeRosa and Mr. Silveri and Mr. Ennis. Congratulations to Mr. Medeiros, who retired from our custodial staff at the end of April and welcome back to Mr. Johnson, to our staff of custodians! Page 2: From The Principal · SAVE THE DATES!!!!! MCAS TESTING DATES! The state mandated annual Postural Screening will be conducted in the next few weeks during your child’s gym period

The state mandated annual Postural Screening will be conducted in the next few weeks during your

child’s gym period. The purpose of this is to find early signs of possible spinal problems with chil-

dren in grades 5-9. It is not a diagnostic service, but rather a program to identify young people who

should have further medical evaluation.

If your child has any unusual findings, you will be notified and asked to take your child to a physi-

cian as a follow up to the findings. The majority of students exhibit no findings. If nothing unusual

is found we will not be contacting you again.

Female students are asked to bring or wear a two-piece swimsuit top or a halter top under

their clothes on the day of the screening. This type of clothing permits a more accurate observation

of the back. A parent/guardian may opt out of this mandated screening through written notification

to the school nurse.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Nicole Dickinson

at 781-834-5045.

ATTENTION GRADE 5 PARENTS

A Celebration of Creativity:

Art and Writing Showcase at DWS Thursday, May 31, 2018 5:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

Please join us Thursday evening, May 28th and walk the hallways of

DWS to view the incredible art and writing talents of our students.

Thank you to the PTO for funding the new bulletin boards in our hall-

ways where the artwork can be displayed. For the fourth consecutive year, all kindergarten

through grade 5 DWS students will create a writing piece using the same prompt or topic. This

year’s writing is a surprise so you will have to come by and view who/what all of our students

have written about!

The Art and Writing Showcase will conclude at 6:30 p.m. when the

Spring Concert begins so please plan accordingly. We look forward to

seeing you!

Mr. DeRosa, Art Teacher

and

Ms. McBride, Reading Specialist

Just a reminder now that the nice weather has arrived please remember to put sunscreen on your

children. Here are some helpful hints from the CDC regarding sunscreen. (The sun’s ultraviolet

(UV) rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes. Follow these recommendations to help

protect yourself and your family.)

Shade—You can reduce your risk of skin damage and skin cancer by seeking shade under an umbrella, tree, or oth-

er shelter before you need relief from the sun. Your best bet to protect your skin is to use sunscreen or wear protec-

tive clothing when you’re outside—even when you’re in the shade.

Clothing—When possible, long-sleeved shirts and long pants and skirts can provide protection from UV rays.

Clothes made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection. A wet T-shirt offers much less UV protection than a

dry one, and darker colors may offer more protection than lighter colors. Some clothing certified under international

standards comes with information on its ultraviolet protection factor. If wearing this type of clothing isn’t practical,

at least try to wear a T-shirt or a beach cover-up. Keep in mind that a typical T-shirt has an SPF rating lower than

15, so use other types of protection as well.

Hat -For the most protection, wear a hat with a brim all the way around that shades your face, ears, and the back of

your neck. A tightly woven fabric, such as canvas, works best to protect your skin from UV rays. Avoid straw hats

with holes that let sunlight through. A darker hat may offer more UV protection.

If you wear a baseball cap, you should also protect your ears and the back of your neck by wearing clothing that co-

vers those areas, using a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15, or by staying in the shade.

Sunglasses—Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays and reduce the risk of cataracts. They also protect the ten-

der skin around your eyes from sun exposure. Sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays offer the best protec-

tion. Most sunglasses sold in the United States, regardless of cost, meet this standard. Wrap-around sunglasses

work best because they block UV rays from sneaking in from the side.

Sunscreen—Put on broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 before you go outside, even on

slightly cloudy or cool days. Don’t forget to put a thick layer on all parts of exposed skin. Get help

for hard-to-reach places like your back. And remember, sunscreen works best when combined with

other options to prevent UV damage.

How sunscreen works. Most sunscreen products work by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering sun-

light. They contain chemicals that interact with the skin to protect it from UV rays. All products do

not have the same ingredients; if your skin reacts badly to one product, try another one or call a

doctor. SPF Sunscreens are assigned a sun protection factor (SPF) number that rates their effec-

tiveness in blocking UV rays. Higher numbers indicate more protection. You should use a broad

spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15.

Reapplication. Sunscreen wears off. Put it on again if you stay out in the sun for more than two hours and after

swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

Expiration date—Check the sunscreen’s expiration date. Sunscreen without an expiration date has a shelf life of

no more than three years, but its shelf life is shorter if it has been exposed to high temperatures.

Cosmetics. Some makeup and lip balms contain some of the same chemicals used in sunscreens. If they do not have

at least SPF 15, don't use them by themselves.

Thank you to everyone who closed your kitchens to let Manny’s do your cooking Monday night! Our Dine for a Cause

nights are a delicious and easy way to support the PTO. Save the Date! May 31-The annual Art and Writing show is May 31. In preparation for this fun fami-

ly event, Mr. DeRosa needs help hanging art. Also, we will be holding a bake sale that night.

We will need volunteers to bake as well as sell baked goods and beverages that evening. Look

for emails from our Volunteer Coordinator with more information!

June 4- Mr. P. will need volunteers for Field Day that will be held on June 4 with a rain date

of June 6. Kindergarten through 2nd grade will have their field day in the morning while grades 3

through 5 will be have their field day in the afternoon. Please note that you will need to have a cur-

rent CORI check on file in order to volunteer at this event. Simply stop by the office and fill out the

form. You will need your license and it takes about 2 weeks for the form to be approved.

June 14- We will be holding a Picnic in the Playground on Thursday, June 14! This is a free

family event. A flyer with more details will be coming home with your student soon!

Your PTO needs YOU! There are 2 positions available next year. We need a new Secretary and someone to coordi-

nate the Box Tops. The Secretary is responsible for taking and distributing meeting minutes at each PTO meeting.

The Box Top Coordinator is responsible for organizing and mailing the Box Tops we collect throughout the year.

The Box Tops are mailed in twice per year. Now is your chance to get involved! If you are interested in either of these

opportunities, please email [email protected].
