Welcome to Week 8! The students and staff have been involved in many exciting learning highlights this fortnight such as the Narrogin Network School Development Day, the District Cross Country, Principal for a Day and a Camp Kulin Leadership talk. We are also very grateful to have our undercover area looking like new again now that the carpet has been installed. I am pleased to announce that as an incentive for all students who attend regularly (90% or above) they will receive a raffle ticket every Friday which will go into the draw for a voucher from Sports Power. This means that if a student continues to attend above 90% each week they will have more than one chance of winning. The raffle will be drawn at each Formal assembly. At the last assembly Breanna Mills, Room 5, was the winner of the voucher for attending above 90% already this term. Well done! Leadership talk Yesterday our Year 6 students were fortunate to have Mrs Tanya Dupagne, Manager of Camp Kulin, speak about being an effective leader. Tanya is one of the top 100 influential women in Australia and a very motivated leader in our wider community. Over 400 children are currently on the waitlist to attend the camps she provides every holidays and on some weekends. The program has attracted the attention of Ministers at State and Federal level, as well as winning numerous awards in its first 18 months of operation including the Premiers Award, Constable Care Child Safety Award and WA Children’s Week Award. Welcome to Week 8!

Donation of Books to our School Library I would like to thank Mrs Sue Hann for kindly donating picture books to our school library.

Principal for a Day 03 June 2015 Emily Jones stepped into the shoes of the Principal position for a day as part of the National Student Principal for a Day Program. Emily encountered a variety of interesting tasks and performed her role with enthusiasm and dedication. I was very impressed with her professionalism and maturity on

the day. Emily’s thoughts on being Principal for the Day:

―Hi, My name is Emily Jones and I was fortunate enough to be voted Principal by the Year 5 and 6 students as well as the staff.

I really enjoyed being the Principal last Wednesday. I learned that being a Principal is a lot of work and this opportunity gave me the chance to do what a Principal really does on a day to day basis.

First, I attended the weekly leadership meeting with Mrs Hayes, Mrs Dyson and Mrs Lund from 8.00am to 8.30am. At the meeting we talked about how to improve teaching at our school.

After the meeting, I took part in the webinar. All the Student Principals across Australia attended the event. There was even a Student Principal from Russia but unfortunately he was unable to join in. We talked about leadership, being the Principal, our goals and we shared a little bit about ourselves. I was on the webinar for an hour and talked on camera for five minutes. We also interacted through messaging on a notepad.

Then I visited the Year 4 students in Mrs Dyson’s class while they were learning about texture in Viewing. I enjoyed helping out students and I thought that all of Room 9 did an amazing job on their work!

At recess I went to the staffroom and had a delicious hot chocolate with the staff. I found the staff conversations very interesting.

After my recess I had a surprise activity. I had to sort out an issue with some girls. I gave them some strategies to deal with the problem.

I had lunch in the Principal’s office while writing my notes. During lunch I organised some games for the Year 1s and 2s. Thank you to all the students who joined in. After lunch I answered a phone call for Mrs Kirby.

As my final activity for the day I had an interview with Mr Brian Lange who was the Principal for 20 years at the High School. The interview was very interesting and I learned a lot about leadership. He said ―that the most rewarding thing about being a leader was watching people succeed‖, and I agree.

I also checked students work and I really enjoyed listening to them reading out what they had written. Thank you to all the students who showed me their work.

I just want to thank everybody who voted for and supported me throughout the day especially the staff and Mrs Hayes. I have really learned a lot from this valuable experience‖.

Engraving Student Bikes 12 June 2015 The local police would like your support in an initiative to help reduce the theft of bicycles. The Police will attend the school this Friday at 8.30am and engrave only those bikes whose students have returned a permission slip from parents which was sent home last week.

Kindergarten and Pre-Primary Enrolments 2016 East Narrogin Primary school are now accepting applications for enrolments for 2016. If you know of anyone wishing to enrol their child at East Narrogin next year, especially a kindergarten aged child, please let them know.

If you are planning on leaving our school at the end of the year, early notification would be much appreciated.

Head Lice Over the past few weeks there have been several notifications of head lice outbreaks in classes across the school. When parents notify class teachers or the office of an infestation, a letter is sent home to that particular class. Head lice are a problem from time to time and sometimes tend to occur during seasonal changes. Parents are asked to regularly check their child’s hair and to use an appropriate treatment. Students with visible, live lice will be sent home until treatment has occurred.

Reporting Semester One Reports will be completed and sent home at the end of this term.

Please remember: Excellent — the student is achieving well above the

expected standard/level for a student at that year level. High — the student is achieving above the expected

standard/level for a student at that year level. Satisfactory — the student is working and achieving at

the expected standard at that year level. Limited — has made less than expected standard/

level. Very Low — low achievement of what is the expected

standard/level.

Reports will be distributed on Thursday 2 July (Kindy students) and Friday 3

July (PP-Year 6). As always, if there

are any questions about your child’s report please speak with your child’s teacher.

Finally, a big thank you to our P&C for your wonderful efforts in raising $936.00 at the District Cross Country.

Kind Regards,

Jo Hayes, Principal

From the Deputy

Behaviour of the Week Every fortnight we have a new behaviour of the week that we concentrate on. We do a bit of a role play at our Monday assembly where the teachers do the wrong type of behaviour and then afterwards a group of students will show the appropriate or expected behaviour.

Our behaviour for the next fortnight is “Be responsible for class equipment”. All classes have some sport equipment that students can use during recess and lunch playtime. The only problem is that students do not always bring that equipment back or do not show the necessary respect for the equipment!!! We would appreciate if you could help us reinforce this behaviour with your child at home to make sure they bring the sport equipment back to class or show the necessary respect to the class equipment.

Dogs On School Grounds Just a friendly reminder that it is Department of Education policy that dogs are not permitted on school grounds (even if they are on a lead) unless part of a school organised event. Friendly dogs are still a risk around students and we ask that parents and caregivers do not bring any dogs on the school premises. Your assistance in this matter will be greatly appreciated. We planted broad beans. I wore a glove to dig a hole. When it grows it will be the same size as me.

By Marley, Year 1, Room 4.

Yesterday we planted leeks, baby carrots, parsley, broad beans, snow peas, broccoli and spinach. We watered the plants with watering cans.

By Scott, Year 1,

Room 4.

On Wednesday we were planting vegetables. These are the vegetables we planted; baby carrots, broad beans, broccoli, snow peas, spinach, parsley and coriander. We found potatoes from last year. We had to use our water bottles for the plants. Then we got the watering cans.

In Round 10 the

Be food allergy aware

Australia has one of the highest rates of people with food allergies in the world- and this rate is growing. Currently, 1 in 10 babies are born with a food allergy. The only way to remove the risk of the allergic reaction is to avoid the food that causes it.

An allergic reaction occurs when a person’s immune system responds to a food protein that it mistakenly believes is harmful. Chemicals are released into the body which trigger symptoms that can be life threatening.

Symptoms of food allergy can include hives, swollen lips, face and eyes, tongue, abdominal pain, vomiting, difficulty breathing and a sudden drop in blood pressure. Severe allergic reactions, or anaphylaxis, can be fatal if not treated immediately.

Nine foods trigger 90% of food allergy reactions in Australia - cow’s milk, egg, peanut, tree nut, sesame, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish.

Emergency first aid for anaphylaxis Lay the person flat, do not stand or walk. If

breathing is difficult, allow to sit. Give the adrenaline auto-injector without

delay. (Make a note of the time it was given.) Ring an ambulance – Dial 000 Stay with and reassure the person. Do not

allow the person to walk at any time. Give another adrenaline auto-injector if no

improvement after 5 minutes If the person loses consciousness and there

are no signs of breathing, begin CPR. Monitoring in a hospital is required for 4-6

hours, even if symptoms improve.

For further information contact your school nurse or visit: Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia – Food Allergy Awareness Week http://www.foodallergyaware.com.au/ (contains school resources including craft, colouring activities, recipe ideas and important information).

Thank you to Gemma Ward and Ebony Rogers for your help in the canteen. Uniforms The rugby jumpers have arrived in Perth and should be delivered by the end of the week. The second and final order of winter jackets should also be here by the end of this week. When washing the winter jackets either hand wash them or when using the washing machine place them in a wash bag or pillow slip with the zips done up. Ros, Jo, Lorraine, Canteen Managers

ENPS P&C and ITalkTravel Narrogin

The ENPS P&C have aligned with ITalkTravel on Fortune St Narrogin to help raise funds for the P&C and also keep business local when booking your next travel expedition be it a large overseas trip or a simple overnight stay in Perth, Albany, Bunbury etc.

It’s simple, ITalkTravel will donate $200 to the P&C in return for the P&C advertising their association with ITalkTravel and getting school and community members to "Like" ITalkTravel on Facebook and also subscribe to their online newsletter.

ITalkTravel will also donate a percentage of any booking made through the ITalkTravel website or directly in store with their travel agents when you (the customer) mention East Narrogin Primary School P&C. It is hoped that, through our broader network of family and friends all utilising the services of ITalkTravel when making any travel bookings the P&C will establish a "royalties" type passive income source.

This is a WIN WIN system for all involved so please get on board and support ENPS P&C through supporting ITalkTravel a locally owned and staffed company who also have branches in North Perth & Kojonup.
