FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Working Bee

The Working Bee was well attended on Sunday and the weather was very kind to us. Nats and Beck had a list of jobs to be completed and we were able to accomplish a lot. The interactive play space behind the 3/4 Hub has transformed into a very active play area with plenty of rocks and logs to climb on and poles to run through. We have also installed more seating around the basketball court area. Then there were the usual jobs: weeding, cleaning drains, de-cobwebbing and mulching. District Athletics Good luck to all the students participating in the District Athletics tomorrow at Dolamore Oval. A reminder that children who are participating need to be at school by 8:45am. Footy Day and Special Lunch - Qkr (our preferred method of payment) Parkdale Primary’s Footy Day is on Wednesday 16th September and the Canteen will be hosting a Footy Day Special Lunch. The lunch includes a pie or 2 party pies plus a drink. A separate form for the lunch day is included with this week’s newsletter. All orders are due back by Friday 11th September. Please note: The Canteen will not operate on this day. Science Incursion This week we have had our science incursion with the Jolly Bops. The children were enthralled with the science experiments and were engaged the whole time. The students saw many fantastic scientific demonstrations that seemed like magic, but were really science. These included exploding hydrogen balloons, spooky fog (dry ice), liquids that mysteriously change colour (chemical reactions) and so much more! The students sang along to science songs and laughed at the jokes of Rusty the Robotic Clown, all in the one great show. Enrolments or Leaving Parkdale PS 2016 We are currently planning for the 2016 school year. If you know that your child will not be attending Parkdale Primary next year could you please let us know as soon as possible so that we can plan and make arrangements for grade structures and staffing. Thank you for your cooperation. Also if you know of any families who have not enrolled as yet can you please ask them to do so ASAP. Unpacking the daily MYTERN Message: Teaching the value of giving.

It’s important that everyone learns the value of giving to others. This can be an incredibly powerful PET when you feel stuck on your own red road. Discuss different ways that you could give within the family, as a family or as individuals, so that when there are moments that you feel you want to give to others, the ideas will already be there. Leanne Bradney Principal

We all have moments when we

feel sorry for ourselves. That's

normal. The best way to turn

off that road is to do something

for someone else. Making them

feel better will help give you

purpose and satisfaction. So go

for it!

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

PREP So far we have had a fantastic Science Week! Each day we have been participating in a science experiment and/or activity. We even made a circuit to turn on a light bulb!

Don’t forget to bring in your answer to the science question we gave you for ‘Show and Tell’ tomorrow. We can’t wait to see what you found!

Next Monday we have a special Transport incursion. It sounds fabulous and I am sure you will hear all about it from the kids afterwards.

Prep B’s session starts at 9.00am so they will miss Assembly this day and need to go straight to their classroom instead.

It was lovely to see all the fathers attend the Father’s Day Breakfast today. We hope you enjoyed your egg and bacon roll and we wish you a fantastic day on Sunday!

GRADE 1 This morning the Preps, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students enjoyed an exciting incursion with the Jolly Bops, as part of our whole school Science Week celebrations!

The students also got the chance to spend their hard earned pocket money on a great gift for Dad at the Father’s Day Stall. They may need a little help digging these out of their bags and finding a safe spot to hide them until Sunday! Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered their time to help.

This week we began looking at a new CAFÉ reading focus where we ‘skip the word and come back’ to improve accuracy. Students are encouraged to use this focus when they come across a difficult or unfamiliar word. They simply skip over the unknown word and read through to the end of the sentence, they then back up and re-read the sentence using context clues to decode the difficult word!

GRADE 2 In Maths this week, we continued our ‘Measurement’ topic with a focus on Area. The children have been estimating, measuring and comparing the area of a variety of shapes.

Our CAFÉ focus this week is ‘Use word parts to decode and determine the meaning of words’. When listening to your child read at home, where applicable help them to identify the base word and any prefix or suffix, e.g. dis/appear, respect/ful. Ask them, “What does the word mean? How does the prefix or suffix change the meaning?”

Grade 2 … cont’d During our Science Week celebrations, the children have been sharing their science question findings with great enthusiasm! They have investigated the push/pull force of magnets, and were entertained and amazed by The Jolly Bop’s visit on Thursday.

We are looking forward to our excursion to Scienceworks on Thursday 17th September. If you are available to come along as a helper (and hold a current WWCC), please let your classroom teacher know as soon as possible. GRADE 3/4 Good luck to all the Grade 3/4 students who are competing in the District Athletics on Friday 4th September.

Our CAFÉ– focus this week is note taking and summarising. We are continuing with Patterns and Algebra in mathematics.

The kids are looking forward to our dress up day next week. All the 3/4 students will be dressing up on Wednesday 9th September and they will be presenting their projects that week. Congratulations to our AR certificate recipients: Corey W, Braeden C, Olivia H, Noah A, Otto D, Leulla C, Tilly F, Ella H, Blake L, Mitchell S, Joel M, Ava P, Daniel f, Ella G, Kya G, Jack C, Xavier S, Beth H and Kate S.

GRADE 5/6 Congratulations to all our Grade 5/6 students on having such great Camps. All students seemed to make the most of the Coolamatong experience and their behaviour was a credit to themselves, their parents and our school.

Good luck to all those competing in the District Athletics this week; no doubt the students concerned

will, once again, perform to the best of their ability.

Our students are steadily completing their Environment projects and hopefully will present either next week or in the final week of term.

In mathematics for the next 3 weeks, all students are studying Fractions and work around this topic on Mangahigh, would, of course, be beneficial.

Work on both the "Memory Books” and "Challenge, Design, Create" will continue in the next 2 weeks.
