News from the Orchard

As I considered this newsletter I started thinking about 2016 and all that happened during the year. We have received so much support in recent months for the buildings we are renovating and Christmas. I laughed a bit when I realized I was worrying about how we could fit all of it in a newsletter, what a great problem to have.

There is so much going on I hope we capture it all. I want you to know that it’s appreciated we have been blessed in 2016 and have much to look forward to in 2017.

From the President

By the time you are reading this our renovations will be complete on two facilities, allowing us to double the capacity of teen program. We will be in the process of hiring staff and completing the requirements for our state license to serve youth. While the physical work of renovations were being done we worked to develop the program as well. Having multiple locations will allow us more flexibility with programming. Step In, Up and

Out will allow our youth to have the proper amount of independence and responsibility as they move into young adulthood. As they begin they will have more structure as they learn what is expected of them, get jobs and form successful habits. They will earn more autonomy and independence as they learn to handle responsibility. Not only are we expanding the teen program, we will be improving it as well.

It’s common to see children building snow forts and throw-ing snowballs at each other after the first snow of winter. Building a snowman and lay-ing in the snow to make snow angels is something most of us can remember with fond-ness. This was the scene just last week out beside Houston Cottage. Some of the residents enjoying the snow, acting out the childhood scenes we’ve all participated in and re-member fondly. My staff sent me some pictures so I could join in the fun visually from a distance. It was good to see. The thing is that a couple of those young adults remarked they’d never been able to play out in a yard in the snow be-fore. Can you imagine?

One of the things we see all to often in the young adults who come through our pro-gram is that many times childhood has escaped them. They’ve been made to grow up much too fast. They’ve been robbed of some of the simplest memories that so many of us look back on fondly. When we speak of our Transitional Living Program, we often dis-cuss helping our residents be-come productive adults, but another very important part of our work is to provide a place of safety, where they are free to be children from time to time.

Results MEASURING IMPACT:

DeLane Bowman, our Chief Operating Officer, has recently spent a lot of time on our PQI plan. PQI stands for Performance Quality Im-provement, and looks at what we measuring and how are we evaluating ourselves. Some of the area include, student progress at our Pre-K, our teens making accomplishments such as opening bank accounts, employ-ment and developing a budget. The plan allows us to regularly evaluate our outcomes for the youth we serve.

Why books?

Why Early Literacy Instruction?

Think back to your childhood. What were your experiences with reading and books? When I think back and remember some of my experiences it brings back good memories and the enjoyment of reading. Library time in school was wonderful. The excitement of listening to the librarian reading a book then the opportunity to flip through the card cata-log and choose any book I wanted. I enjoyed reading growing up and I thank my parents and teachers that introduced me to those ex-periences.

Teachers and parents are passing along their experiences to the next generation. I asked the teachers at the Tyndall Center, “What were some of your favorite books growing up”? They would smile and reminisce and name

books they grew up with and have passed down those same books and experiences to their children and grandchildren.

Children here at Tyndall are being exposed to literacy through books, library time, and lit-eracy based activities. According to research, early literacy instruction is the precursor for later literacy achievement for reading and writ-ing. Books can help students with building vo-cabulary, improving listening skills, expanding their imagination, learning basic concepts of reading, and phonological awareness. Here at the Tyndall Center, we strive to introduce lit-eracy in meaningful ways such as a good book or trips to the library which can jump start a journey for the enjoyment of reading.
