From the PresidentBy Rex Burr
Dear River Run Homeowners,
As I board a plane headed for one of my favorite cities, BostonMassachusetts, I realize it must be time again to update the RiverRun newsletter. Yes, my streak of updates from the road
continues.
This month's update will center on a very important issue, which wasbrought to my attention by one of our concerned homeowners.Specifically, Will County is proposing some zoning changes for thequarry located at the corner of Hassert and Plainfield-Naperville Road. There are three proposals as follows:
1) A map amendment from agricultural (A1) to industrial (I2)2) A special use permit for general construction and demolition recycling,(concrete, etc.)3) Outdoor storage of uncontained bulk materials
A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday,September 18th at the Will County Executive Building located at 302 N.Chicago Street in Joliet. I encourage all River Run homeowners to attendthe hearing to learn more about the proposal, understand how it mayimpact our neighborhood and voice related concerns.
For more information, please contact the Will County PlanningDepartment at 815-774-7905 or visit the Website atwww.willcountylanduse.com.
Until next time, I wish you all a happy and safe September.

Naperville Area Humane SocietyAnnounces “Feline Frenzy”Adoption Promotion
Naperville AreaHumane Society(NAHS) is excited to
announce the “Feline Frenzy”adoption promotion being heldAugust 30, through September 10,2012. During Feline Frenzy, anapproved adopter can take homean adult cat (6 months and older)for just $5 or a kitten (2 to 5months) for $75.
“Summer is an exceptionallydifficult time for shelters. Thereare literally thousands of cats andkittens needing homes, and manyorganizations such as ours havevery limited space,” said Michelle
Lenz, animal care manager atNAHS. “We have an adoptionroom full of kittens, plus manymore in our foster homes and onour waiting list. We have no doubtthat the current economy hasaffected our adoptions, buthopefully Feline Frenzy willencourage those thinking aboutadopting a cat or kitten to actuallypursue it.
“Adult cats are oftenoverlooked by visitors if there arekittens available. One of the greatthings about adult cats is that theirpersonalities are already formed. They can be a great addition to afamily, and they’ll thank youevery day for the new life they’vebeen given,” continued Ms. Lenz.
At NAHS all adult cats and
kittens have received an initial vetexam, age-appropriatevaccinations, and a microchip;they have been tested forFeLV/FIV and are spayed orneutered before going home.
Naperville Area HumaneSociety is a private, not-for-profitorganization founded in 1979 todevelop and implement animalwelfare programs and serviceswithin Naperville and thesurrounding area. NAHS’ goal isto protect animals and to preventanimal suffering. While providingshelter and adoption programs forhomeless animals, NAHS alsostrives to educate the communityon compassion, respect, andkindness toward all living things.
I RESCUEDMY BESTFRIEND!
Pet TalesBy the Naperville Area Humane Society
Hi, my name is Harley.I am a beautiful five-year-old female
longhair cat that has been waiting for
a new home since October! I really
don't want to be here an entire year.
It's hard to watch all the kittens and
other cats get adopted while I wait
patiently for my forever home. I get
along with other cats and I even play
catch! Please stop by our Kittyland
cat room soon.
I would love to meet you!

the happy gardenertips for everyone who love to dig
By Heather Prince
September and Octoberare perfect months toplant trees. The warm
moist soil and cool airtemperatures encourage rootgrowth until hard freezes, providing resources for a goodstart in the spring. Many of us areexperiencing tree losses this yeardue to storms, drought andemerald ash borer, so it’s a goodtime to think aboutplanting replacements.
You have lots ofchoices! As you walkyour property and thinkabout what sort of treesyou would like. Treescan help with yourheating and coolingbills. The U.S. ForestService has found thatthree well-placed shadetrees can reduce theannual heating andcooling costs of anIllinois house by 6.5%.
Large deciduous shade treesare best planted on the south sideof the building to offer optimalshade from the hot midday sun insummer, and still allow winterlight to warm the structure. Wesuggest oaks, honeylocusts, ginkgos and maples among othertypes of trees for this purpose. To
block the lower afternoon sun,add small deciduous trees to thewest of the home. Some speciesyou might want to consider forthis area would be serviceberries, magnolias, crabapples, andhornbeams. Many of these treesalso offer food and shelter forbirds and wildlife. In fact, smalltrees or shrubs sited to shade yourair conditioner will allow it to
operate even more efficiently.Plants should be at least three feetaway from the unit to allow forproper air flow. Plus, trees andshrubs can hide the unit, creatinga more pleasing landscape.Evergreen trees can offer aneffective windbreak from ourblustery winter winds whenplanted on the north and
northwest corners of the property.Spruce, arborvitae, and pine canbe particularly effective in thisspot.
You can find trees incontainers, balled and burlappedand in some cases, bare rooted. The Growing Place carries allthree types, although only bareroot in the fall and early spring.
We particularly likethe ease of plantingbare root trees asthey start growingright away, withminimal transplantshock.
To make sureyour tree issuccessful, plant itno deeper thanwhere the rootsbegin to flare fromthe trunk. Studieshave shown thattrees suffer when
planted too deeply. Three to fourinches of mulch around the base ina saucer shape, but not touchingthe trunk, keeps soil moisture andtemperature in balance.Questions? Checkwww.thegrowingplace.com forplanting instructions or stop byeither location for a helpfulhandout.
