To coin the old phrase “Where the heck did summer go?” It seems like yesterday I launched my new toy into the water. Not the best weather at the start but any weekend out of the city is a good one. This season was especially pleasing as our new website www.healeylake.org was launched and Andrea McPhail and Dave Duggan are the new proud parents of our new project. Andrea and Dave have done a superb job and are to be congratulated on job well done. The 2008 Regatta was the first in many seasons to have a rain delay. Some people thought it was more like a monsoon, but we lived to tell the tale. Please remember that next year’s Regatta will be the 50 th Anniversary. We, the Executive, are looking for paraphernalia, stories, and pictures of any kind detailing the first ten years or so. Please contact me if you have anything to tell or submit. Peter Arnold has volunteered to be the Cottage Watch Director, which was in urgent need of being looked after. Thank you Peter for your hard work and dedication to the Advertising Director position. Sharon Tosswill graciously volunteered to run the Membership and we thank her very much. Remembered ...CAROL ANNE (CREEN) CHEREPA

It is with truly great sadness that we mark thepassing of our friend Carol. Those of us whoknew her for many years and those who knewher for only a short time will miss herinfectious laughter, her sense of humour, herunlimited capacity of friendship and hercourage.

At this season of Thanksgiving we are trulyblessed to have had the privilege of knowingher. She was a great friend and loved by allwho knew her. She may be gone, but hermemory will live on in our hearts and she willalways be here with us on Healey Lake.

Our love and support goes outto her family, John, Melissa and Jessica, brothers Jim, John, Dave and their families.

Healey Lake Association is proud to offer aCottage Watch program in the winter, the timewhen cottages are less frequently or not beingused at all. Every member that has paid themembership fees in full is automatically on ourpatrol-list. If you think, you don't needthis service - or will be coming up in thewinter yourself - please let me know soyou can be taken off the patrol-list.

I had organized this service for several yearsalready, and after handling advertising for awhile I will now take over the cottage-watch-program again. Many volunteers are neededand this is the hardest part of the job, aseverybody is 'always busy'. I need cottagersthat come up in the winter once-in-a-while andwho would be willing to spend about an hourper month to enjoy winter-wonderland on the

lake, patrolling 5-6 cottages in the area mostconvenient. It doesn't matter if you go out withyour snowshoes, x-country-skis, snowmobil ortake your dog for a walk - why not combine it withhelping out some neighbours. When you patrol acottage, you will walk around the property onceand simply look for fallen trees, dangeroussnowloads or broken windows and doors, nobodywill go into any cottage! In emergencies you willcontact me and I will report to the cottage-owner.

If you have a teenager at highschool, these pa-trols can be used as Community Hours which somany students need to graduate. My whole familyused to help.

I will be contacting some of the volunteers thatparticipated in previous years, but I will needmore help - if you can spare some time toenjoy nature, please let me know beforewinter arrives:e-mail to [email protected] Tel: 705-375-5289

PUBLIC WORKS YARDWe are in the process of moving into the new publicworks facility. It provides secure storage formaterials such as culverts, fencing, posts etc. Aheated garage for servicing our trucks andequipment which will allow us to better meetprovincial safety standards and prolong the life ofthis very expensive machinery. As I write this thenew sand shed is being filled for this winter’s useand it will make winter road servicing more efficientas we will not have to depend on our neighbors forsupply.

TAXESWe have started working on the 2009 budget.

Well another summer has ended and in my travelsover the summer I only saw one baby loon on ourlake this summer. I saw the young loon swimmingwith its’ parents down by the Marina’s in earlyAugust. This young loon was swimming on its’own however was not yet diving for food.

It will soon be time for the loons on our lake to beheading south for the winter. Here are somemigrating facts about the Common Loon. DuringSeptember, group feeding is quite common asloons gather on larger lakes while migrating. Ourloons will be migrating south sometime in themonth of October to the area around the Gulf ofMexico. For the loons to be able to “take off” fromany lake, the loon runs along the surface into thewind. The distance needed to gain flight dependson wind speed; in calm times the bird may run asfaras several hundred metres before it gainsenough speed to take off. Once in the air the looncan travel swiftly. Its relatively small wingspan(130 to 140 cm) carries it at average speeds of120 km per hour during migration. The wings beatquickly to carry the large body and have a highdegree of curvature to provide lift.

Migrating Common Loons occasionally land on wethighways or parking lots, mistaking them for riversand lakes. They become stranded without a

considerable amount of open water for a long takeoff. A loon may also get stranded on a pond thatis too small.

Young loons must wait until their flight feathersgrow and their wings are strong enough whichusually doesn’t occur until late November.

Loons are usually found in groups on the winteringgrounds in the Gulf of Mexico. The Common Loonis flightless for a few weeks after molting all of itswing feathers at the same time in midwinter. Allloons have greyish feathers in the winter time(they loose their distinctive black and whitechecker markings and white necklace). Immaturebirds resemble adult birds in winter plumagehowever the white feathers of the belly and wingare present all year long. Loons moult again inlate winter before returning to nesting grounds inspring. The dull winter coat is replaced by theirbeautiful black and white coat.

Next spring, the loons will return in pairs, when theice starts melting, to their nesting grounds toclaim their territory. They are solitary nesters.Small lakes, generally those between 5 and 50 hacan accommodate one pair of loons. Larger lakesmay have more than one pair of breeding loons, with each pair occupying a bay or section of thelake. Until recently, loons were thought to matefor life. Banding studies have shown that loons willsometimes switch mates after a failed nesting at-tempt even between nestings in the sameseason.

One other interesting fact to leave you with aboutour Common Loon is that they are related to thepenguin and their life expectancy may beanywhere between 15 and 30 years.

Have a wonderful winter and see you all next yearon the lake.

not proceeded farther but we are working on itbecause we must stop the very few who abuse thesystem while most of you make such a good effort.

We have constructed a metal storage area to keepstuff from the transfer sites till we have enough tomake it profitable to sell and have removed.A system is in place to remove the unsightly anddangerous hazardous waste from the transfersites. It is not going as quickly as it shouldbecause we waiting to get more of the specialbarrels for transporting. Improvements are beingmade to the bear proof fencing.

Have a safe happy and healthy winter

A Celebration To RememberSusan & Peter Arnold

Lakeshore Marina & Chalets had a very specialyear in 2008, celebrating 25 years of businesson Healey Lake. The fact we owners had aspecial birthday as well added to theopportunity to celebrate big style withcustomers, family, friends and businesses ofour area. What a Sunday that was on theLabour Day weekend, before all cottagers hadto put an official end to another beautifulsummer season on the lake. Organisation wasin full swing for several weeks already leavingthe big question of the summer: will it rainAGAIN? Well, everything worked out perfectly,it ended up to be the nicest weekend of thewhole season and we were blessed withsunshine, warm temperatures and clear nightsky all weekend.

The anticipated number of guests wasexceeded by far and we had about 400 peoplehelping us to celebrate at our very ownlakefront. It was just amazing, everybodyenjoyed socializing with cottagers they hadn'tseen in a while, business-owners they dealwith in town, and friends and families theysometimes don't see all summer. Kids of allages were running around using theplayground and waterfront and making newfriends. Family and friends came from all partsof the globe and left with lots of memories. We tried to talk to most of our guests thatnight, but it was so busy that we might nothave gotten to all of you; we do treasure thesignatures in our guestbook, and all lovelycards, wishes, bottles and flowers we received- thank you so much!

Of course we could not have done it alone, and we would like to thank all our friends thathelped us with the organisation, set-up andtake-down. The bar-service, catered buffetand decorations were outstanding and are stilltalked about, done professionally by the

complete Osborne family of MacTier: April,Emily, Rhonda, Barb, Kerry and James; thanksfor the many hours of preparation. Our kids came home to help, the fireworksdisplayed by Stephanie and Shane wereenjoyed by everybody. Later on peoplegathered around the bonfire done by Danile andJenny.

All celebration was accompanied by the greatmusical background of D.J. Doug Agar fromMacTier. Comments varied fromthe 'party of the year' to the'biggest party on Healey Lake’. Forus it was absolutely wonderful andtruly a celebration to rememberforever.
