From the President Our signature phrase “Keeping the Spirit Alive” was certainly present during Spirit Days 2017. It was a fantastic time as you will note throughout this beautiful newsletter. We truly celebrated our 25 th anniversary with great energy and bountiful gratitude. I am positive that you will find this edition reflective of our endeavors to be an association dedicated to each other and to the Sisters of St. Joseph. These words “Keeping the Spirit Alive” have also challenged us throughout these past twenty-five years. In addition to planning our annual Spirit Days activities, our Scholarship and Community Service Grant programs challenged us to select the best applicants with limited funding. Each year, we continued to place in action the numerous academic, spiritual and social values we learned from the Sisters. Through your financial support, we have awarded more than $250,000 in grants and scholarships since 1994. We have helped hundreds of individuals and I thank you for making this possible. The Nazareth Association Board of Directors has always been wise stewards of your dollars and we want to continue this practice of stewardship. Today, the phrase “Keeping the Spirit Alive” presents to us some new challenges as we enter into our 26 th year. The Sisters will be moving into their new assisted living facility in 2018 and the Nazareth Center Motherhouse will not be available for our Association Office. Consequently, we are in the process of seeking temporary office space somewhere in the Kalamazoo area until a more permanent home is found. We are challenged in finding any individuals or businesses willing to accommodate us. Please contact us if you can be of assistance in finding the Association a home. The Board of Directors also decided to carefully review our annual Spirit Days event and we seek your comments. Do you come to Spirit Days to see your former classmates and friends? Or visit with the Sisters? Or tour the campus buildings and grounds? Maybe you attended Spirit Days for these reasons or perhaps, you never desired to attend a reunion. We will be asking for your thoughts. In early 2018, we will be seeking your opinions via an electronic and/or paper survey as we continue to discuss the phrase “Keeping the Spirit Alive” and what it means to the membership of Nazareth Association. I ask for your time and energy in completing this survey but also feel free to send me ([email protected]) your comments now if you so desire. PLEASE NOTE that the electronic survey will be sent to your current email address. Please update your email by either using the enclosed envelope or the Association website: www.nazarethassociation.org. In conclusion, we are most grateful for your financial support. We are especially humbled when a large monetary gift arrives through a charitable end-of-the year contribution. These actions enable us to fulfill our mission statement to serve the world community. From the President

Our signature phrase “Keeping the Spirit Alive” was certainly present during Spirit Days 2017. It was a fantastic time as you will note throughout this beautiful newsletter. We truly celebrated our 25th anniversary with great energy and bountiful gratitude.

Today, the phrase “Keeping the Spirit Alive” presents to us some new challenges as we enter into our 26th year.

The Happenings of Spirit Days By Mary Anne Dalton, CSJ

Friday, June 23 - The first evening of Spirit Days is always an exciting event. More than 100 alums gathered to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Nazareth Association. On display in the Lacy Room at Nazareth Center were memorabilia from the schools, fantastic raffle prizes, and mementos from nursing and other institutions. Every table displayed beautiful bouquets of colorful spring flowers. Fellowship and joy filled the room as the reunions of beloved classmates began.

President Randy Berd welcomed members and invited remembrances of past days. Enthusiastic alums shared stories of faculty and lifelong friends. Faculty members, who had a profound influence on the lives of alums, were mentioned. Of course, the Gull Road Tavern was fondly remembered. Other recollections brought laughs at some of the rules for students in effect back in those days. In the dorm at Borgess, there was only one phone on the floor and the line to use it was always long. Or when the college women left campus, they were expected to wear high heels - no matter what the event was.

Saturday, June 24 - The morning began with a continental breakfast. President Randy Berd presided over the business meeting. The oldest alum present, Lucille McNally Dooley, NC ‘41, was honored. Gratitude was expressed for the blessings of the past 25 years. Randy acknowledged the office staff of Joyce McNally, Kathy Creek, and Linda Huss for their continued hard work for the association.

Randy noted that the association is presently in good shape, but the future of Spirit Days in these transitioning times is uncertain. Thoughtful discussion, planning and decision-making are vital. The Board will develop a strategic plan and all members are invited to bring forth creative ideas. Toni Hall of Grosse Ile, MI was introduced as a new board member. Appreciation was given for out-going board member Jim Faist for his contributions. It was noted that the Scholarship awards will be presented at the noon banquet, but grants to the Sisters of St. Joseph and their ministries will be awarded on Saturday, Sept. 16. In the past 25 years, over $115,000 has been awarded in grants and the Sisters are most grateful for the support received. (See Spirit Days continued on page 3) Page 2

Sr. Theresa MacIntyre and Sr. Mary Anne Dalton were honored with Gratitude Trees to be planted on the Nazareth campus. Randy also announced that, in honor of our 25th anniversary, two more trees would be planted in memory of all the faculty and students who have attended our institutions.

Saturday Luncheon - The beautiful flower bouquets were carried to the Sisters’ dining room for the fabulous noon luncheon. Nazareth staff served us graciously. The atmosphere was festive. Scholarships were awarded to eight students. Gratitude was expressed by those who were present. Randy then moved about the dining room with the microphone to allow memories to be shared. Darlene Mosher recalled how the association started. Several sisters made comments about their appreciation for the many students that attended our institutions and for all the association has done and become. Lastly a gift from the sisters was presented to each guest - a booklet from the SSJ’s 75th anniversary and a small box of mementos.

Afternoon - The afternoon was free for visiting and exploring. The History Room had displays of the five institutions including documents, yearbooks, and photos. Lisa Murphy, Nazareth archivist, was available to assist alums. One Academy grad asked Lisa if a copy of her report card might be resurrected and Lisa found it. Groups of alums were seen pouring over yearbooks and reliving memories. Some took advantage of touring Holy Family Chapel, including the Holy Stairs. Others preferred to sit and visit until time for the Mass which honored the deceased members of the Association. Bishop James Murray, celebrant, gave an outstanding homily - as usual.

Afterglow - Guests returned to the Lacy room for repast and more fellowship. The winners of the raffles were announced. It was not long before alums said their good-byes, knowing that a good time was had by all. Special thanks again to Spirit Days Co-Chairs Anita Rosenberg and Jan Candela and all who helped make it a lovely weekend.

The George and Elizabeth McMorrow Scholarship was renewed for Sarah Hirzel, a senior at Aquinas College.

The Charlotte Henns Koestner Scholarship was awarded to Dawn Richards of Vicksburg, a junior majoring in Theology at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio.

Nicole Thompson of Kalamazoo, a senior at Western Michigan University and

Stoney LaForge of Kalamazoo, also a senior at Western Michigan University.

A Beautiful Gift

Our new board member, Toni Hall, arranged for the meeting rooms, dining room and chapel to be adorned with beautiful flowers on Spirit Days. The flowers were generously donated by her friend, Valerie Buhl of the Floral Department of Trentwood Farms in the city of Southgate. The Sisters enjoyed the flowers in their dining room long after Spirit Days were over. If any of you are in the area, stop in and thank Valerie for us!

Marian Hankerd Speaker Series

Dr. Marian Hankerd was a distinguished 1937 graduate of Nazareth College and a charter member of the Nazareth Association Board of Directors. Raised near Jackson, Michigan, in a socially engaged Irish-Catholic family, Marian’s extended family included several Sisters of St. Joseph. Education, especially for women, was highly valued. Marian distinguished herself as an engineer working in Washington DC for 35 years, where she wrote several books on urban transportation and was active in professional groups, though she was often the only woman in their ranks.

When Marian generously remembered us in her will, the Association Board decided to use her donation to co-sponsor annual programs at Transformation Spirituality Center at Nazareth.

This fall, a facilitated interactive journey through Richard Rohr's Book, Falling Upward for the Two Halves of Life was presented. Entitled “Falling Upward”, this series involved reflection, journaling, and spiritual practices to help you connect with the wisdom of this powerful book.

we have a spontaneous party or an opportunity to enhance the occasion. Otherwise, we would have to forego that particular activity. Perhaps it would be an unexpected Ice Cream Social, a surprise party, or decorations for hats for our tea parties, door prizes for Bingo, etc. We could not enjoy these additional events without our Cookie Jar fund. Our tea parties are always entertaining, thanks to Karen Tavernier, Sister Pat Mullen and Sister Mila Sones who initiated the decoration committee a few years ago to decorate our hats. Of course, we all enjoy John Yellich who serves as The Butler at our Tea Parties.

There are so many novel activities we have done and can do, thanks to all of you. We might have forgotten to list everything, but know that we are and always will be grateful to you. We love to be spontaneous, and again, thanks to you, we can do that. Surprises please everyone! You are in our prayers and in our hearts for all you do for us and for so many others. Those special benefactors whom we remember during the daily Liturgy at Nazareth are the generous men and women of our Nazareth Alumni. As we pray for you, we ask God to bless each and every one of you and your families.

Gratefully, Sister Grace Scola & the Sisters of St. Joseph

A Thank-You from the Sisters

Dear Alumni,

Thank you for all your kindnesses and generosity toward the Sisters of St. Joseph. In the past and presently, you continue your thoughtfulness toward our Sisters. We here at Nazareth are your grateful recipients. So in the name of our Sisters, I have been designated to express our gratitude for all the peaches, apples, fresh garden tomatoes, candy, etc. made possible because of your generosity. We cannot fail to mention the lovely centerpieces donated to our dining room as we gathered to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Alumni’s establishment. May I also acknowledge the donations, that are now in our Cookie Jar fund, which allow us to purchase those “extras” when

Gratitude Trees – 2017

This year, our annual awardings of the "Gratitude Trees" were given to Sr. Theresa MacIntyre and Sr. Mary Anne Dalton. Four years ago, the Nazareth Association initiated a new tradition in our desire to commemorate the Sisters of St. Joseph. Annually, the Nazareth Board of Directors selects two Sisters that have served as exemplary professional, academic and spiritual mentors to students, faculty and staff. We pay tribute to them with the planting of trees in their honor.

Sr. Theresa taught music at Barbour Hall Junior Military from 1961 - 1969. After a brief return to St. Rita's parish and earning a Master's degree in music, she joined the faculty of Nazareth College in the music department. After a few years, she transitioned over to campus ministry and served as the Coordinator of Volunteer Services (1971 - 1977). We deeply appreciate her years of service at Barbour Hall and Nazareth College.

Sr. Mary Anne Dalton has literally educated thousands of students both directly and indirectly throughout these past forty years. More importantly, she has enhanced the skills of hundreds of teachers through appointments at Marygrove College, the Diocese of Kalamazoo in Curriculum and Instruction, Xavier University of Louisiana, Bowling Green State University, and some at Western Michigan University and Nazareth College Community Education. She continues to serve as a consultant for schools desiring to be trained in the Workshop Way system of teaching and is still so eager to share it.

Sr. Theresa MacIntyre and Sr. Mary Anne Dalton

The Nazareth Association Board includes elected representatives from the educational institutions of the Sisters of St. Joseph and a member of the Congregation. The Association by-laws require a minimum of eleven members.

Departures from the 2016-2017 board were James Faist and Robert Cooper. Randall Berd, Susan Allen, Dr. Patricia Quattrin and Anita Rosenberg desired to remain on the Board after serving multiple terms. The Board approved the renewal of their terms in accordance with the Association By-Laws.

At the June 24, 2017 Annual Meeting, Toni Hall, Nazareth College '71, was nominated and elected by the membership to serve on the 2017-2018 Board.

These actions result in an Association Board of thirteen members for 2017-2018. They will have the general management and control of the business and affairs of the Association. If you have any questions regarding the activities of the board or have an interest on serving on the board in the future, contact Anita Rosenberg, Board Development Chair at 231-780-1276.

1961 – A Thank You note from Mary Jo (O’Donnell) Maher: To all of you who worked to make Spirit Days “A+”!! Thank you for making Spirit Days weekend so enjoyable for us! We were treated in a welcoming way and the people who made it so memorable deserve a big “Thank You!” Everything was perfect. It was wonderful to meet the students who were awarded scholarships funds! The liturgy was meaningful and beautiful – singing truly wonderful! It is an honor to have graduated from Nazareth and have met many fine women who attended class there and who have served others so generously in their lives. Nazareth made a difference! God Bless the Sisters of St. Joseph and teachers and workers at Nazareth! Hats off for all you’ve done and still do!

Most of my classmates know I’m a writer. My first book, Curse of the Komodo, will be published this year. It is the first book of a trilogy. Needless to say, I’m thrilled. The book is a “middle-grade” book, for students from grades 5 -8. It will be available on Amazon and also in bookstores. I’d be glad to come and do a book signing! I’m thrilled to share this information with my classmates and former students.
