Volume 3 November 2016 Dear High Roaders, First a huge grateful shout out to everyone who participated in the amazing Halloween party and the trunk or treating. It was so much fun! I want to say a special thank you to Joanie and Jan for all their work on the party that benefitted the local Alzheimer’s Foundation. This is very near and dear to me as you know both my parents are in some stage of this awful disease. This is going to be an annual event here at THROD, both the Trunk or Treating and the Halloween party so mark it on your calendar the second you see the date posted for next year you won’t want to miss it. So November is here and with that comes the realization that it has been three years since we decided to be The High Road on Dawson, and WOW what an amazing three years it has been! We have met challenge after challenge with success! What we have been able to do for our amazing community in this short period boggles my mind. I am so excited to see what we collectively as a community do in the next three years! This is such a great month for our country and for our organization. Why you ask? It is an opportunity to vote for the leadership of both. This Thursday, you as a member will get to vote for three new people on your leadership team here at THROD. I believe that THROD is going to change the face of philanthropic giving here in Austin. You think Live Strong was awesome? I say THROD will make an even bigger impact. It is my hope and dream that we will become an organization that others pattern themselves after. That we are the model for community based philanthropic social clubs. A place that you can make a dierence and hang out with your friends. I encourage you to be here on Thursday and vote for the new board members. Come and make your opinions known and voices heard. It will be a great opportunity for you to meet the candidates and ask them questions. I would be remiss if I didn’t say that I will miss the three awesome board members that are leaving, Carrie York, Pati Dukett and Peter Geranios. Whomever fills their shoes will have their work cut out for them ! There are no words to express my gratitude for their participation, wisdom, love and enthusiasm that they have shown for THROD. We would not be here today if it were not for the leadership of the these three amazing people. I also want to say a special thank you to their family for the support they gave to these three amazing individuals, I know that you could not have done all that you did without your family being supportive of your role here at THROD. In celebration of our anniversary I want to honor the following fine people who stood up and said I will ght the good fight. Dear High Roaders,

First a huge grateful shout out to everyone who participated in the amazing Halloween party and the trunk or treating.

ACL parking Fundraiser update!

Thanks to the 30 plus High Road Volunteers that came out to help with our largest fundraiser of the year! We manage the High Road parking lot for 2 weeks and give people an opportunity to buy a parking pass for 3 full days each weekend. This year we set a new record and netted more than $15,000!

This year we collected email addresses from all of our parking customers so that next year we hope to sell out the lot in advance! ACL Parking Volunteers received a bright-yellow, tie-dyed shirt, with The High Road Volunteer on the back. If you want to help with this group next year, email [email protected] to get on the 2017 parking volunteer list.

Thanks to Amy Slagle and Rick Perkins for managing the volunteers. That money will go to the High Road General Fund to help pay the bills of operating the High Road.

Steve BuggMember Since 2003

Michael BoggsMember Since 2014Co-founder of The Stunsl Group, a business management consulting company. I have been involved in a number of business start–ups in the Austin area. I currently serve on the Advisory board of two Austin start-ups and I’m in the process of starting up a Drone Detection company. I have served on the Board for two not for profit organizations in the past, The Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Cuisine for Healing. I have been a member at the High Road from the beginning and before that, the Elks.

John Dodge Member Since 2014I have been a member of the High Road for 2 years.  I am usually seen at the HR with my wife, Melissa, and our 7 year old daughter Claire.  Our family lives in the Zilker neighborhood and we love to call it home.

My goal and interest in being on the HR board is simple.  There are a large number of families like ourselves who attend some of the events and hang out at the pool, but have not been involved in any other way.  I will help engage those families to become more involved. Specifically, I want the HR to be a place we come to for other community events and activities. I want us to find ways to participate and give back together.  Part of that is simply rallying people for some of the great things that are already going on, and part of it will be new ideas.

Growing up I was involved in scouting and youth groups, and I would like to help create an opportunity for my daughter to experience giving back to the community with her family and friends in similar ways, and have fun at the same time like I did!

Laura GraftonMember Since 2015My perfect day entails laying under the palm trees, looking over a crystal blue pool, paperback book by my side, and a cool drink on the way. Luckily, I got to experience my dream this summer after an unfortunate layoff from Macmillan

Publishing. During that time, I became a regular at the lodge and pool and got to know some of the most thoughtful and hardworking people around. I have only been a member since February 2016, but during that time I fell in love with the lodge and what it stands for. Many of you may know me as the volunteer coordinator at HAAM this year, but I also was on the pool committee and worked at our booth at Eeyores. I want to continue with the all the wonderful events the lodge has been providing for years, as well as add other events that encourage our members to support their community and to become an active member of the lodge. Alas, I now have a job, so I won’t be laying at the pool every day, but I hope to be able to contribute as a board member the next three years.

Plan to attend the Election of the Board of Directors of the High Road at our monthly Membership Meeting on Thursday, November 3rd, at 7 pm. Below is a list of the eight candidates for the 3 Board of Directors positions that are up for

election. Other candidates may be nominated from the floor at the November 3rd meeting.

Only Card Carrying Members of the High Road will be allowed to attend the meeting and to vote. Each candidate will have up to 2 minutes to address the membership regarding their qualifications and interest. Other members will then have an opportunity to speak in support of the candidates. Upon conclusion of the presentations, the room will be closed for voting, so please be prompt. The 3 candidates with the most votes will become members of the Board of Directors effective January 1, 2017. If a runoff becomes necessary, that vote will be held immediately after the initial count.

Nick KuehnMember Since 2013I am born & raised in Austin, TX and appreciate your consideration for Board of Directors for High Road at Dawson. I generally use the lodge for socializing but would like to donate my time to help out in upkeep, maintenance, financial/budget planning, special events and/or whatever other way my skills can be of use to the lodge. My hobbies include enjoying live music, playing tennis and bird hunting.

William Patrick LaVioletteMember Since 2016Pat, is currently a retired Electrical Engineer with plenty of extra time to devote to volunteer organizations. He has volunteered for The High Road, working many hours at Eeyore’s (2 yrs), HAMM (2 yrs), Fourth of July, Flag Day ceremony, deck building, bar

tending, cooking and various maintenance projects around the lodge. Pat regularly supports the lodge coming to hamburger night, steak night , and other events. Pat’s wife, Mary, and children, Dreux and Charlotte, are members of the lodge.

Pat was born in Omaha Nebraska, attended Saint Cecilia’s elementary school, Creighton Preparatory High School, and the University of Nebraska. Graduated with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering. While attending the university he met and latter married Mary Ellen Baburek.

After graduation Pat and Mary moved to Wichita Kansas where Pat worked for NCR and Mary worked for St. Joseph Family Practice. Pat and Mary moved to Austin In 1979 to work for Motorola. Pat worked for Motorola for 36 years as a Semiconductor Design Manager and recently retired.

Past volunteer activities include Soccer Coach, Den Leader, Assistant Scout Master, BSA Unit Commissioner, Indian Guild Parent, and home owners association board member and president.

Jen PhilhowerMember Since 2006I’ve worked for The High Road in various ways over the years, and am now running for a seat on the Board. In the past I’ve been editor of the newsletter, curated the Facebook page, helped bring the Dolly Parton Birthday bash to life, run movie

nights, & volunteered at the Fan Drive. I’ve cooked, cleaned, parked, and raffled. I’ve been to many Board meetings to ask for help and to offer help. My hope now is to steer us toward being the great community service I know we can be. Austin is full of neighbors that could use our help. As a member of the Board, I would work with members to make The High Road a city-wide resource for the causes we care about.

Nick SargologosMember Since 2016Long time Austin resident, family moved to Austin in 1971. Graduated Lanier high school in 1974, received BS degree from the University of Texas Austin in 1982. Received commission as an officer in 1983, completed flight training and designation as a Naval Aviator in 1984. Served on active duty in the US Navy until 1989. After leaving active duty have worked in the high tech field with various fortune 500 companies, including IBM, Motorola, Dell, and since 2006 Freescale here in Austin.

Professor in the Austin Community College government department.

high school booster club (2 years), and board of directors for Avery Ranch Homeowners Association (2 years)

Brett SmithMember Since 2015I am running for the Board to make a contribution as a manager. In a membership organization, we all have to find ways to contribute using our skills and talents. Professionally, I have been trained to manage teams,

build consensus and facilitate meaningful change. I have background in management consulting, an MBA, and 10 years experience in real estate.

Over the next three years, The High Road will go through significant change. The board will be tasked with a number of consequential tasks - representing the will of the membership as we chart a new cultural course that includes new members and legacy members, create a culture that represents the unique identity of the organization, establish the independence of this organization and make important choices about the physical space.

I’d like to serve this organization through my skills as a manager to steward The High Road through this next important phase.
