From the Pastor’s Desk

Introduction: Our Scripture lessons for today have one common, encouraging theme: No matter what happens in our lives, the risen Jesus is always with us. God is always near to those who seek Him and who want to live in His presence, doing His will. Scripture lessons: The first reading, from Acts, is taken from the beginning of Peter's first public proclamation about Jesus and how God raised Jesus from death, thus fulfilling the Messianic prophecies about the prom-ised descendant of David. In the second reading, Peter exhorts the early Christians to place their Faith and Hope in God Who has saved them through the precious Blood of His Son and Who has raised Jesus from the dead. The Emmaus incident described in today’s Gospel is the story of a God who will not leave us alone when we are hurt and disappointed. The message of today’s Scripture readings is that the followers of Jesus are to maintain contact with their Risen Lord through the Eucharist and the Bible. The readings also remind us that our belief in Jesus’ presence in the consecrated Bread and Wine should help us to understand better his presence in the Bible and in the believing and worshipping community. Putting the two appearances (to the Emmaus disciples and to Peter), together, it is clear that the risen Jesus wanted Peter to act as spokesman for him and that the faithful who seek to follow Jesus should seek his com-pany in the Eucharist and in the Bible under the direction of Peter and his successors.

Life messages: 1) Jesus meets us on our Emmaus Road. The risen Lord meets us on the road to our Emmaus in the ordinary experiences of our lives and in the places to which we re-treat when life is too much for us. We, too, have hopes and dreams about better health, healing, financial security and better family relationships. These often get shat-tered. The story promises us, however, that Jesus will come to us in unfamiliar guises to sup-port and strengthen us when we least expect the risen Lord. Emmaus moments come to us when we meet the risen Christ on our life’s journey through rough times. 2) We meet Jesus on a daily basis in our life’s journey. The Church instructs us to hear Jesus on a daily basis through the faithful reading of, and meditation on, the Bible and to experience Jesus through our participation in the Eucharistic celebration where the risen Lord gives himself to us, through our personal and family prayers and through our family meals. When we meet Jesus through the Word of God, we commune with him. We renew our relationship with Jesus through prayer. These two meetings will enable us to meet the risen Jesus living in all the peo-ple we meet and to offer them humble, loving and selfless service.

3) Do our hearts burn when we listen to the risen Lord in the Bible? Christ comes to us most clearly in the Word. Vatican II (Dei Verbum 21) tells us that Jesus is to be equally venerated in the Eucharist and in the Bible. Therefore, we need to study the Bible, learn the Bible, memo-rize the Bible, meditate on the word of God with burning zeal and practice what the Bible teaches.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14 Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place during the 10:15 a.m. Sunday Mass. This pro-gram is designed for children ages three through eight (third grade). Children’s Lit-urgy of the Word brings the Gospel to the chil-dren at their level of understanding. Through appropriately adapted Scripture texts, music, prayer, and activities that reinforce the Gospel message, the children have an opportunity to celebrate their faith in a way that is joyful and relevant to their own young lives. The children are escorted out of mass by the program cate-chists after the Opening Prayer and return to mass during the Preparation of Gifts. For more information, contact Kathy Joslin at 636-677-1567 or [email protected].

Prayer for Protection During Tornado Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The season of tornadoes is upon us. These tornadoes invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this tornado season we turn to You. O loving Father, spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin Mary, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where stormless eternity awaits us.

Amen. [Adapted from “Prayer for Protection During Hurricane Season”, written by Most Rev. Mau-rice Schexnayder, second Bishop of Lafayette (1956-1972), following Hurricane Audrey in 1957.]

SAINTS PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES May 3 Call Philip the gospel's "Answer Man." "Can any-thing good come out of Nazareth?" Nathaniel asked Philip, who had proclaimed Jesus "the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the proph-ets" (John 1:45). Jesus asked Philip, "Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?" (John 6:5). Greeks brought Philip their request: "We would like to see Jesus" (John 12:21). Philip's answer to each question: bring people to Jesus! At the Last Supper, finally, Philip had a request of his own: "Show us the Father!" (John 14:8). Jesus had three last ques-tions for Philip: "You still don't know me? How can you ask that? Don't you believe?" And an answer: "I am in the Father and the Father is in me" (John 14:10). Today's James is not John's brother, Zebe-dee's son, but, tradition says, author of the New Testament Letter of James, who died praying for his murderers in Jesus' words: "Forgive them, for they know not what they do." Few historical details for either saint, but lessons aplenty: Bring every ques-tion we have and everybody we meet to Jesus; be, as James' letter challenges, "doers of the word and not hearers only" (James 1:22). --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J.
