From the Pastor September 13, 2015 24 th Sunday in Ordinary Time - B In week 13 of my summer sacred study series on the 4 Eucharistic Prayers for Various Needs [EPFVN], which is one EP with 4 themes, we reflect on the special intentions particular to EPFVN-IV: Jesus, Who Went About Doing Good . These inserts are added after the anamnesis [remember], offering, epiclesis [calling down the Holy Spirit on those entering into Holy Communion] and before we remember the dead and the Saints. EPFVN - IV: Jesus, Who Went About Doing Good - Special Intentions The Priest, with hands extended, says: Bring your Church, O Lord, to perfect faith and charity, together with N. our Pope and N. our Bishop, with all Bishops, Priests and Deacons, and the entire people you have made your own. Open our eyes to the needs of our brothers and sisters; inspire in us words and actions to comfort those who labor and are burdened. Make us serve them truly, after the example of Christ and at his command. And may your Church stand as a living witness to truth and freedom, to peace and justice, that all people may be raised up to a new hope. Perfect Faith & Charity. In one of our Lord’s most daunting challenges He said, “Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” [Matthew 5:48] The first special petition in this EP asks God to ‘bring’ us closer to this goal with the help of His grace. For God never lowers the bar; rather, He forgives those who seek His pardon and peace when they fail, which enables them to learn from their mistakes. However, as the rest of this first petition reminds us: we are not merely in a teacher/student relationship with the Lord; we are bonded to God by a design of His own making, which we reflect on next. We Are God’s Own People. As God’s children through baptismal adoption, we are forged to the Lord in a loving parent/child relationship. This has radical implications for our dealings with one another - in this life and the next. For God will ask us what He asked Cain: “What have you done to Abel … where is your brother? And when Cain smugly retorted, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” the Lord exacted a dreadful punishment on Cain for disrespecting his brother’s life. [C.f. Genesis 4:9-12] God will hold us equally responsible for our brothers and sisters - if we do not respect and care for their life. ”Lord, I want to see.” Before Jesus cured a blind man He asked the man what I always thought was rhetorical - if not downright silly - question: “What do you want me to do for you?” to which the blind man replied, “Master, I want to see.” [C.f. Mark 10:51] But when you think about it, do we really always want to see and hear? Do we not turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to those in need? Don’t we often ‘keep our mouth shut’ - as well as our wallets and bank accounts - rather than get involved in the wellbeing of all in need? This leads to the next petition about … Christ’s EXAMPLE and COMMAND. Jesus not only TOLD us what to do and how to do it … He SHOWED us how to be channels of His loving compassion and healing touch. So when we ‘comfort those who

So when we ‘comfort those who labor and are burdened,’ we are not simply doing ‘a nice thing’ … we are fulfilling a divine commandment! We Must Be Living Witnesses to a New Hope. As Jesus said, “all will know you are my disciples if you love one another.” [John 13:35] Here’s a recap of what a 2nd Century letter, written by a pagan to a Roman authority, said about Christians back then: “They live in their own countries as though they were only passing through … play a full role as citizens, but their [earthly] homeland is a foreign country … they marry and have children, but do not expose them … share meals, but not their wives ... live in the flesh, but are not governed by the desires of the flesh … obey laws, but live on a level that transcends the law.” Would people in OUR time say the same of us? Can we truly sing that vintage Native

Donations appreciated. The Pope and Abortion Forgiveness

As I often mention, we must get accurate information about papal statements and other Catholic issues from orthodox, proper sources. The confusion caused by most media by their inaccurate, incomplete reports about Pope Francis’ ‘abortion forgiveness permission’ certainly proves my point. For by omitting all the facts, many media sources caused some to fear they were not forgiven by the Priest to whom they confessed an abortion. Here’s ‘the rest of the story’ as we say. Unlike some countries, most - if not all US Bishops have long granted their Priests the faculty to forgive abortion and the penalty of excommunication IF it was even incurred - for not all who have or procure an abortion are always excommunicated! To learn more about this complex issue, visit the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website: usccb.org and read the article Cardinal O’Malley Welcomes Pope’s Year of Mercy Plan for Post-Abortion Healing and its attachment: hopeafterabortion.com. And please pray that all those wounded by abortion or ANY sin will be reconciled to God, His Church and one another NOW or in the upcoming ‘Year of Mercy.’

Faith Stories of Our CatechistsMy name is Maureen Lybarger and I have been asked to speak to you regarding my experiences as a catechist. I have been a catechist for 8 years including teaching our young people in the Religious Formation program, being a member of the RCIA team that instructs adults seeking to enter the Catholic Church, as well as facilitating in our Adult Faith Formation program. Each of these experiences has one thing in common - sharing my faith with those in our parish. Teaching the children in RF, (I teach 5th, 6th, or 7th grades), is often challenging and you don't always know if anything sticks!! But when a child learns something and gives you that one right response, it makes it all worth it!Joining our RCIA catechumens and candidates on their faith journey to full communion with the Catholic Church is always rewarding. As a cradle Catholic, I am in awe of those that make the choice as adults to join our Faith. After completing the RCIA program, many of them often want to pass on that faith experience to

others, whether as catechists or by serving in some other ministry.Facilitating in the AFF program helps me to grow in my faith. We can learn so much from each other by studying the bible together and then discussing and sharing insights and experiences with others in small groups. All of these experiences help me to grow in my faith. In all of them I am growing and learning along with those I am teaching or leading. There are many opportunities here at SEAS to get involved and grow in your faith. Check the bulletin or speak with Mariam Nawab or Diane Luceri for more information.

the “Good News” to others by teaching those seeking to become Catholic through the RCIA:

This Weekend’s ReadingsTwenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary TimeFirst Reading: Isaiah 50:5-9aIsaiah describes the willingness of the Suffering Servant to submit to the persecution of his enemies. This willingness stems from true faith in God, and the knowledge that the Lord will always be his help.Second Reading: James 2:14-18James states that if some one is hungry and you wish them well but do not help them, you have done them no good. He compares this to stating your faith, without backing it up with your actions. He reminds us that we must show our faith through our good works.Gospel: Mark 8:27-35

Jesus taught his disciples that as the Messiah, he had to suffer much, be put to death, and rise three days later. Peter began to disagree and Jesus reprimanded him for judging by human standards rather than by God’s. He told them that whoever would be willing to lose their life for the sake of Jesus and the gospel, will in fact preserve their life forever.

This is our single largest fundraising event of the year.
