TOS Newsletter March 2018 Steve Arthur gave us two interesting presentations last month, and if you were unable to attend the meeting you missed an excellent one. As I stated in the last message, the Botanical Gardens have delayed the move to the Rotunda building until they have completed the parking lot that goes along with it, which means we will be meeting in the Holly room in Baker Hall through the June meeting. The new website is up and running and you can view it at www.tidewaterorchidsociety.org. It is my intent to keep this site up-to-date and relevant, so if you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know. As a reminder the April meeting is on the second Sunday of April (April 8 th ) due to Easter Sunday being the first Sunday. I hope everyone is able to attend. We will be electing new officers, as well as hosting an excellent speaker in Bill Thoms. Greetings All, 2017-2018 Officers President ……………………….…. Dave Bryan Vice President ………………….…. Bill Thoms has been growing and hybridizing orchids for more than 40 years. He is an internationally recognized expert on the genus Bulbophyllum and has written a book on all aspects of their care and feeding. He has traveled to many countries in search of them to better understand their needs.

He and his wife, Doris Dukes, have received just about every award for flowers and culture given by the AOS, and there is a yearly award given for the best Bulbophyllum exhibited the previous year which is named after him. They recently received their 99th AOS Cultural award -- and they have them in 30 different genera.

The talks are spiced with humor, and many secrets to producing award-quality plants and flowers are revealed!! Come see one of the funniest, most knowledgeable and definitely most humble speakers in the world.

There will be plants and books for sale at the TOS meeting on April 8th!

TIDEWATER ORCHID SOCIETY

Minutes Membership Meeting

March 4, 2018

President Dave Bryan welcomed everyone and brought the March meeting to order at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens at 2:00 p.m.

Patsy Temple announced new member John Groshall, Karen Bartone, and Richard Palley. She also welcomed guest Jim Alexander.

She also reported that the Beginner’s class went to Smithfield Orchids and all had a wonderful time. John Zukowsky provided a class on Cattleyas that everyone enjoyed. Several of the group went to Smithfield Inn following the class for a fantastic lunch.

Jamie provided the Treasurer’s report. Funds in the checking account are $40,799.07 ($6,000 for Merritt Huntington Memorial Symposium and $21,310.08 for Arthur Kaplan Memorial Lecture/Dalis Foundation), with $13,588.99 available. Petty cash available is $100. Debit card for Kaplan Conservatory is $500. Jamie explained that the Budget Committee meets this month and if the Board agrees with what they present, it will go for approval by the Society. He also reported that the Society made $75 at the plant sale that was held at our February meeting. Dave explained that sale was held because we had not had a speaker that sold plants in a while. The intent was to not make money. All plants except for two were sold and the two were raffled off as door prizes.

The group agreed that the Hospitality Committee has been doing a great job. It was noted that if anyone wanted to bring anything, they should feel free to do so.

Frank Drew provided an update on the Nominating Committee. The following are the nominations:

Jamie Krochmal – President Alice Snyder – Vice President Ellen Hansen – Treasurer Sandra Cross – Secretary (continuing in position) Roseann Wade – Trustee Marty Drees – Trustee It was noted that Sandra Cross would continue for another year as Secretary. If anyone on the floor wants to nominate anyone else, they should nominate them by the next meeting. All nominations will be accepted and voted on at that meeting.

Dave mentioned that the April meeting may run longer than normal as we will be voting on the budget. NBG told Dave that we will continue to meet in this room through June. We should be meeting in the Rotunda building in August.

The TOS website is up and running! Address is tidewaterorchidsociety.org. It currently contains newsletters and other information. Jamie proposed putting the reimbursement form and the IRS form on the website. Patsy and Gill are working on the history and asked if anyone had any information on the TOS history to let them know. Dave asked the group if anyone wanted to be the

new webmaster for the site. Overall, there was positive feedback on the site for those who had already seen it.

Dave then let members show plants that they brought to the meeting. He suggested it would be better to do this at this time rather than at the end of the meeting. Patsy shared her award winning Bulbophyllum with its tiny flowers.

Dave reported that the last symposium may be this year which will be the 12th one. It is currently scheduled for November 2nd and 3rd and will be at the Virginia Beach Resort and Convention Center on Shore Drive in Virginia Beach.

Becky Tupper introduced our speaker Steve Arthur and announced he would be providing two presentations, first “How Orchids Came to Us” and then a mini presentation on species. Steve has over 30 years of experience growing orchids and gave a very entertaining and interesting presentation.

Raffle conducted.

Meeting adjourned at 3:20 PM.

Julius Roehrs Nursery has been in business since 1869, dealing in tropical plants. I have talked to the great grandson, George Roehrs who passed stories onto me that his family had told him over the years. In the late 1800’s, they imported many Phals from the Philippines. In one of their shipments, they received a plant of Phalaenopsis stuartiana growing in a human skull. The plant was put on display in the main entrance to their greenhouses. At first people were not sure what they were looking at. Then they realized it was an orchid in a human skull. Their reactions included loud hysterical screams, running in panic, vomiting on each other, passing out, etc. It was total chaos. The newspaper got wind of the orchid/skull and wrote a story about it. People then lined up to see the orchid/skull. It became so popular that Roehrs Nursery decided to make postcards with the orchid/skull and sent them out to thank people for their order. My postcard is dated October 6, 1919 thanking Mattie Robinson for her order. Thought this bit of history should be passed on. Plato Mathews

Upcoming Field Trip On May 19, the int/beginner class is planning a road trip to Jeff and Linda Morris in Charlottesville, a stop at close by Floradise Orchids, with a lunch stop at the famous BBQ Exchange (mmmm…). We will leave early and be back early evening.

Since we are carpooling, I thought that there might be some of you who would be interested in joining us, so please let us know.

We have 3 months to plan this, and Jeff has indicated that 40 people might be tight in the greenhouse, however ALL are welcome!
