St Mary & St Mina’s Coptic Orthodox College
Keeping you posted... From the Head of College
What a wonderful time we had celebrating the Feast of St Mary. Last year the stu-dents and teachers enjoyed the festivities so much we made the decision to make it part of our traditional events. It was wonderful to see the senior students having a great time with the Primary children. Thank you to Fr Elijah and Fr Daoud who both joined in the soccer games at the park. Fr Elijah also celebrated Mass for us and took time to explain parts of the Mass to the children. Mary is the mother of our Church, the mother of Jesus and a woman of incredible strength in the face of many trials that were sent to test her. The final trial watching her son die on a cross must be the worst thing a mother could endure. We thank God for sending this woman of courage and faith as a role model for all of us.
Year 12 are in their final weeks of formal schooling and I ask that our whole school community keep them in your prayers. In recent days a few have come to school with very BIG smiles as they have already had early offers for university courses.
On 5-7 September the year 5 and 6 students attended the annual camp. Lots of fun is sure to be part of their time in the snow and at Questacon in Canberra. Thank you to Mr Nicola, Ms Frolich and Ms Iffland for taking the students away and giving so freely of your time away from family.
Don’t forget to buy your tickets to the Parents and Friends Fundraising Dinner on 15 September. Tickets are available from Mary Nicola, the P&F Secretary, and at the front office of both campuses. Please check our links on Facebook or go to http://stmary.nsw.edu.au/
On Tuesday 11 September our College will be displaying student Art works at the NSW Parliament as part of the Coptic New Year Celebrations.

Book WeekStudents thoroughly enjoyed participating in all the organised Book Week Activities. The activities that students participated in included the: book fair, the local library visit, char-acter parade, talent show, art competition and the Super Duper musical incursion. Students enjoyed dressing up in their favourite book characters and are to be commended for being in-volved and participating in the parade. I would like to thank Mrs. Zaki for organising the variety of activities for all of our students to experience.
Science FairThis year the Junior School participated in National Science Week. The Science exhibition on Friday the 17th of August was a fantastic opportunity for our students from Kindergarten to Year 6 to display/demonstrate a Science experiment of their choice to their fellow peers. The Scientific experiments that the classes from K-6 presented with their teachers during the fair were engaging and informative. Students are to be congratulated for their efforts for the won-derful scientific experiments that they brought in. We are looking forward to an even bigger Science Fair next year.
Father’s Day BreakfastThe father’s Day Breakfast was an enjoyable day for all of our wonderful fathers. I would like to thank all of our parents for your continual support of the College and to the P&F for organising such a wonderful breakfast.
ICAS English CompetitionStudents from Years 2-6 sat the English ICAS competition on Tuesday the 31st of July. The paper assesses reading and language skills in a range of contexts. The following aspects of texts are assessed and reported: text comprehension—reading for meaning—in literary and factual texts; the writer’s craft in selecting particular text types, vocabulary and techniques; syntax; and vocabulary. The questions require students to locate, identify, sequence, explain, interpret, analyse and infer information in and about texts. Results for the competition will be released in September.
