ST PAUL’S SCHOOL THE LINK – Term 1, Week 7 (2018) 1
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF FAITH & COMMUNITY
TAKING A STAND AGAINST BULLYING
Friday 16 March has been declared a National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. In a letter to schools, the Prime Minister and Minister for Education jointly urged school leaders to consider how their school might use this occasion to take further steps to reduce the incidence of bullying.
I’d like to begin by sharing a useful definition of bullying I read online recently –
Let me also remind you that bullying isn’t limited to words and actions that take place at school. In this connected world, much of the bullying that impacts on children occurs online, using the various social networks that children use to keep in touch with their schoolmates and other friends.
At St Paul’s School, we have a zero-tolerance policy for bullying in any form (while recognising, of course, that children will sometimes be rude or even mean in their dealings with one another). Allegations of bullying will always be treated seriously and investigated thoroughly. Where the allegations are found to be true, sanctions will be applied and the student concerned will also be counselled so they understand what they did wrong.
“At St Paul’s School, we have a zero-tolerance policy
for bullying in any form.”
1 ST PAUL’S SCHOOL THE LINK – TERM 1, WEEK 7 (2018)
When someone says or does something unintentionally hurtful, and they do it once, that’s RUDE
When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful, and they do it once, that’s MEAN
When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful, and they keep on doing it even when you tell them to stop (or show them that you’re upset), that’s BULLYING
ST PAUL’S SCHOOL THE LINK – Term 1, Week 7 (2018) 2
There is also a role for parents to play in taking a stand against bullying. Not in dealing with the issue: if the incident involves students from St Paul’s, I would ask that you report your concerns and leave us to deal with it. However, in terms of monitoring your child’s social media interactions, you have opportunities and freedoms that we do not have. As I suggested in my first newsletter article of the year, random spot checks on your child’s social media is a good idea - sit with them and have a look together to see what types of conversations they're engaging in. Make sure that they are not talking to people you don’t know and trust. Make sure that they are not posting private information, inappropriate comments or embarrassing images. Make sure that they are not accessing their online media when they should be asleep!
While you are at it, may I suggest you should also consider random spot checks of your child’s internet browser history – on their laptop, as well as any mobile devices. It may be necessary to have a frank conversation with your child(ren) about the need to balance their right to privacy with your right/requirement as a parent to protect them. It is likely that children will be unaware of some of the dangers they are exposed to in an online environment. So, without wanting to frighten them, parents need to find age-appropriate ways to explain what they need to look out for. Cyber bullying is not the only online hazard. Sexual predators may lurk on game sites, waiting for opportunities to prey on children. Pornography and online gambling sites are also all too readily accessed by curious children. Fraudsters may encourage children to divulge private or financial details, including credit card details.
In some ways, providing your child with unregulated access to an online device is a bit like leaving one of the windows of your house unlocked. You never know who might sneak in. And if you think that might just me being alarmist, may I encourage you to read the following article from Parenting Ideas.

Kind regards,
MR NIGEL GRANT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF FAITH & COMMUNITY

YEAR 9 SCIENCE: SHOULD WE CONSTRUCT TSUNAMI PROOF BARRIER WALLS?
Working within the ‘Inquiry’ Realm of Thinking at St Paul’s, Year 9 Science students were given the provocation: “should Tsunami proof barrier walls be constructed along every inhabited coastline?”
Over three lessons, students produced a presentation to convey their thinking to the class. Two students, Amy Holdship and Kimberly-Jane Trench produced a clever video that included real-time drawing and a voiceover. You can watch their video by clicking the image below:

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING UPDATE
Last week the Service Learning team took part in Clean Up Australia events on both Friday and Sunday. Both days were great community events with students from across all year levels taking part. Friday saw students cleaning the actual school grounds during their lunch break and Sunday morning had students and parents up early cleaning the local parklands that adjoin the school grounds on the Bald Hills flats. Students donned protective gloves and, armed with large white rubbish bags they proceeded to fill over thirty bags of rubbish across the two events. The clean-up was a tremendous success but just reinforced with the students and their parents who accompanied them on Sunday’s event, that we are very irresponsible with the way we dispose, or fail to dispose, of our litter responsibly and thoughtfully. Hopefully, the students who took part will now become advocates for cutting down the use of plastics and other disposable items and start to encourage their peers to take responsibility for ensuring all litter is disposed of in an appropriate way. I would like to thank all the students who participated, especially those who sacrificed their Sunday morning, to contribute to something really positive for their local community. It is very important that we understand our actions can impact the wider community in both positive and negative ways. We at St Paul’s need to be responsible global citizens and last week’s clean ups were a very positive step in that direction. Mr Cameron Howes Head of Experiential Learning Development
YEAR 7 CAMP
Our Year 7 students headed to Kenilworth for their class camp this week. It was
a wet few days, but friendships were strengthened and all-in-all students had a
memorable experience.
More photos and campers’ reports to come!

INTERACT CLUB
Do you feel a sense of joy when giving to others? Are you
keen to contribute to community projects and help to make
an impact?
Interact is a Rotary Club at SPS, which gives back and
supports both international and local communities.
It allows students to work together in fun and engaging
activities, giving them the opportunity to demonstrate
leadership.
Interact meets fortnightly, and look out for posts on Facebook
and posters around the school for meeting times.

RIDING HOME TO FIRST
Did you know St Paul’s has an Equestrian Club?
Students Amy Tonkin (Year 12, Gladius) and Lucy Chapman (Year 9, Scudo) recently competed in the West Moreton Anglican College Show Jumping Event held at Moggill, representing St Paul’s School.
Both girls performed exceptionally well with Amy taking home First Overall and Lucy placing fourth.
Congratulations to both students for their achievements!
If you’re interested in joining the Equestrian Club, see Ms Fraser (Extra-
Curricular Coordinator) for more information.

YEAR 1 INTEGRATED STUDIES TIME (IST) This week Year 1 students looked at how Design Thinking can help solve problems. They were presented with the problem of helping Mr Hill design a birthday cake for his 5-year old niece. We used our Design Thinking model of Engage, Ideate, Prototype to develop ideas and prototype a class solution. In the Engage phase, we asked lots of questions to get an understanding of who Bonnie is, what she likes, why Mr Hill is making the cake etc. We then used that information to Ideate some amazingly creative ideas before some students had a chance to pitch their designs. The class gave feedback based on the criteria from the engage phase before accumulating all the best ideas and Mrs Morris prototyping a final solution. Year 1 learnt to collaborate, empathise, iterate, be curious and show their ideas rather than just explain them. Students learn to give and receive feedback in a constructive manner and learnt the value of Teamwork. Design is one of five Realms or ways of thinking and learning that St Paul’s supports in our holistic approach of educating students. Mr Justin Hill IST Specialist Teacher
PETER PAN – VIDEO AVAILABLE!
Last year’s Junior School Music, Peter Pan Jr, was a huge success!
Countless hours of rehearsals, costume-making, stage setting and much more
went into the fantastic production.
If you would like to purchase a recording of one or both nights’ performance, you
can do so HERE.
Thank you to past student, Rory Stansfield, for filming and editing these videos
for us.
YEAR 1 OLD TOY MUSEUM
It was a ‘blast from the past’ for some of our teaching staff, but a whole new
experience for our Year 1s as they visited the Old Toy Museum this week.
As part of their Humanities Unit, Year 1 are learning about things from the past. A
special guest and long-time toy collector visited the School and set up a huge
collection of old toys. Some were over 100 years old!
Students had a wonderful time discovering all kinds of objects and games that aren’t
typically sold in stores anymore.

ECOMARINES ‘CLEAN UP’ FORESHORE
On Sunday 4 March, our EcoMarines travelled to Wynnum foreshore
to participate in Clean Up Australia Day. Our mission was to search
for microplastics along the foreshore, knowing the impact that these
small pieces of rubbish can have on the marine life in Moreton Bay.
With our parents and Mrs Casablanca in tow, armed with our gloves,
bags and tongs (supplied generously by Brisbane City Council) we
searched high and low for rubbish along the beach, in the park and on
the rocky jetty. We found a lot of interesting items, but were amazed
at the collective rubbish found by ALL the ambassadors in 90 minutes!
When auditing the rubbish, we found that straws, cigarette butts,
bottle caps and plastic bags were a regular collection. Not to forget
plastic water bottles and salt and pepper sachets!
On such a hot morning, we were grateful for the reusable water
bottles, cold water and yummy snacks supplied by Urban Utilities!
Thank you to Penny and Kylie from Tangalooma EcoMarines, for
inviting us to be part of Clean Up Australia day with our fellow
ambassadors! We certainly learnt a lot about what rubbish is
impacting directly on our waterways! Now to spread the message!!
Did you know that if you picked up 2 pieces of rubbish a week, you
would pick up around 102 pieces in a year? Can you imagine what the
world would be like if EVERYONE did that?!

Teacher & EcoMarines Ambassador

MEET OUR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL CAPTAIN (PART 3/3)
“Nevertheless, this is my last year at St Paul’s School. This is the first year that the School has changed ‘International Representative’ to ‘Executive International School Captain’. This is a really challenging position after I have been nominated. Furthermore, this is not the position of just getting a badge and sit down doing nothing. Just only after the opening assembly, there are so many meetings coming up. In other words of course, the responsibility is getting higher and higher. Although leadership makes me be very busy every day, I really enjoy helping out the International students in addition of having opportunities to speak up for them this year.
About homestays, I have lived with three different families. Living with people that you don’t know might take some getting used to for the first week, but as you know them longer, you can feel the happiness and gradually become a part of their family.” – Nerissa Chow, Year 12
HSP BLUE NEWS
HSP Blue is the top class at St Paul’s International School. The students in this class are working hard to improve their English language and communications skills to the level required for them to transition to mainstream classes at St Paul’s. Currently in this class we have 16 students: 1 from East Timor, 2 from Hong Kong, 1 from Macao and 12 from China. We are also preparing 2 students for entry into mainstream classes at St Margaret’s. We have 8 students for entry into Year 11, 6 students for entry into Year 10 and 2 for entry into Year 9. Despite the differences in age and cultural background, they share a common goal. In Term 1 2018, HSP Blue has been studying a range of topics to develop their Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking skills. Topics such as Language, Advertising and Documentary films have provided opportunities for students to further develop their vocabulary, their knowledge and use of English grammar, reading and listening strategies, academic writing skills and presentation skills. We are also beginning to integrate REALM thinking through the Creativity Realm into our learning so that students are better prepared for life after school. The aims of this approach include encouraging the international students to collaborate and share information in groups as well as to develop an openness to take risks with their language and learn from their mistakes. In addition to the classes they attend in St Paul’s International School, they experience Music, HPE, Art and Drama with mainstream teachers. Ms Kathleen Power ESL Teacher

CONVERSATION CLUB
Conversation Club is a fun initiative designed to stimulate
cross-cultural interactivity within St Paul’s’ Global community.
This new concept in 2018 involves bringing together two
groups- Language Learners and Language Conversation
Partners. It is held at Sippers Café and kicks off at 1pm most
days. Pairs are expected to speak for at least 20 minutes
utilising language on nominated skills and topics (available
on the school’s online learning platform). Focus questions
and associated exercises act as a Launchpad for
conversation during the first 10 minutes. Pairs are free to
steer the conversation in other directions. Likewise,
languages other than English studied at St Paul's School
(Chinese and Japanese) can also be incorporated. Many
thanks to Mr Shen’s Year 10 Chinese class who took time
out of their busy schedule to sit and down and chat with the
students from High School Preparation (HSP) Green. It is
clear from witnessing the past five weeks that our St Paul’s
community of learners enjoy sharing those cultural stories
which make all of us unique. For anyone keen to join
(teachers or students) approach any of the SPIS teachers as
a Term 2 schedule is gradually taking shape.

Boek House was loud and proud, convincing the judges they were most deserving of the Spirit trophy.
Our Swimming Carnival provided the opportunity for students in Years 3-12 to compete alongside one another, and provide support and encouragement to their peers across year levels.
Well done to all Houses for showing great team spirit and participation!

MUSIC CAMP
This year the Concert Band, Vivo Strings and Wind Ensemble packed their bags for Music Camp. The camp’s focus is to complete over a terms worth of rehearsals in just 3 days. After a quick unpack of the truck, it was straight to business practicing to eventually create some wonderful musical sounds. On Saturday night some enjoyed free time while the Big Band continued to burn the midnight oil. Sunday is the longest day of the camp, with 5 full rehearsals. In the break, some made use of the games room or pool while others in the percussion section chose to keep in peak physical shape. After the gruelling process of the day the whole camp relaxed with a trivia competition. Through the questions, the students were able to get to know their teachers and captains. Results from the furious tournament were “Gucci?” in first place, just beating the “Beat Stealers,” (teacher team) and in the newly appointed wooden spoon place, “Girl Power.” The final day consists of a preparation rehearsal followed by a performance to the other groups to show the incredible improvements. The muscles then come out for the truck loading and cleaning of the spaces. With all bags packed and lots of energy left behind, a course it set for home. The camp is extremely beneficial to the music program and the hard work can be heard. Well done to all students.

MUSIC SUPPORTERS’ GROUP – AGM
Thank you to those who received the email about the Music Supporters’ Group meeting and came along on Monday night. We
couldn’t do what we do for the students without the help of such dedicated parents.
Unfortunately, at the AGM there were no people who put their names forward for two of the key positions – President and
Treasurer. It is necessary for these positions to be filled in order to form a committee. Without a committee we cannot;
· Access the money that already exists in the account, which is held by the Association. This money is frozen until a
committee is formed.
· Organise Music events, such as Music InThe Park and Con Brio (formerly the Spring Music Celebration) and the
Solo Competition, in which the MSG plays a major role in terms of providing food and drink for sale.
The President of the St Paul’s Association, Gerard Yorston, has allowed us two weeks to canvas for prospective nominees for
these roles. If you think you may be able to help us out, the following information may assist you in making a decision;
· Karen Mellor, our incredible outgoing MSG President, explained last night that the role is not a difficult one, and is
made even easier by being able to delegate to the committee members. She also acknowledged that our
administration staff, particularly Tracy Davidson, are very helpful in assisting the President in organising events
(unlike many Supporter groups who do not have the benefit of this assistance).
· Gerard also explained that the requirements of the Executive (President, Secretary and Treasurer) could be spread
among the people holding the positions, e.g. while it is good to have a representative from each Supporter group at
the Association meetings, it is not necessary for this to be the President.
· Our outgoing President and Treasurer are available to complete a detailed handover, explaining what needs to
happen for various events.
We respectfully ask you to consider assisting the Music Supporters’ Group in forming an official committee by nominating for one of the available positions, and ensuring the continuation of the MSG for the benefit of your Music children. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Kellee Green ([email protected]), outgoing President Karen Mellor ([email protected]), Secretary Gaye Grieve ([email protected]) or for more information. If you would like to nominate yourself for a position, please contact Gerard Yorston ([email protected]).

ANGLICAN SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL On May 18 a group of our most experienced musicians will be taking part in the Anglican Schools Music Festival. This will see around 12 Anglican school in the Southeast Queensland region come together for a day of workshops and rehearsals at QPAC as part of a massed concert band, string orchestra and choir, and will culminate in a premiere concert in the evening. Students who have been nominated should receive a letter early next week inviting them to participate. Please keep an eye on your emails for this letter.
YEAR 10 MUSIC – SONIC HIGHWAYS: BRISBANE
On Thursday last week our Year 10 classroom Music students travelled around Brisbane to visit some of our city’s most iconic music venues and institutions as part of their Sonic Highways: Brisbane unit. This unit will culminate in a Launch Party at which guests will have a chance to view the documentaries that will be created by the students about various aspects of the Brisbane music industry, and will be treated to a performance of music by Brisbane artists performed by the students.
The group visited 4ZZZ Radio, the Brisbane Jazz Club, The Triffid, the Cloudland Memorial and The Zoo. A particular highlight was The Triffid, co-owned by Powderfinger bass player John Collins. JC was generous enough to show the students around the venue, explaining the history of the building and recalling stories about some of the acts who played there. Some of the students also had a chance to interview JC for their documentaries.
The students will spend much of the remainder of the semester
preparing for the Launch Party, for which we’ll publicise the details
closer to the event.
