International Dealer Meeting On the 16th of May Steve Cugley, Shannon O’Brien, John Hayter and I (Graham Rutter) made our way to Toulouse in the South of France for the annual Planit International Re-Seller’s Conference.

The venue was a Hotel very well equipped to cater for large groups of people with around 150 people, from 93 different re-sellers making the journey from up to 80 different countries around the world.

With such an event covering the variety of products that Planit sell it was great to share experiences with other re-sellers and catch up with the various product managers and software developers.

With CabinetVision 2011 just going into the Beta testing stage we were able to get a demonstration on the features first hand and get a glimpse of where the products are heading into the future; I must say I’m really excited with what the future holds.

After an overview of the latest releases for the different products; AlphaCAM, CabinetVision, Radan and EdgeCAM there was an awards dinner on Monday night. The location was kept a secret up until the very last minute with everyone travelling onboard 2 buses to a beautiful Chateau built during the mid 1700’s.

The award ceremony took place halfway through a traditional French meal and I’m very proud to announce that we were awarded the prize for ‘Planit Re-Seller of the Year’!

A testimony to a great team and all of our customers for getting us to where we are today; Thank you!

Needless to say we celebrated with a few French Wines well into the evening.

At the end of the conference we all went our separate ways; John Hayter with his wife Wendy headed to Paris, Steve Cugley and his family headed home with a 2 day stopover in Singapore, at the time of writing this Shannon O’Brien has just started his 9 day European tour and at the time of writing this; I’m waiting to board my delayed flight to London where I will spend 2 days sightseeing before heading for home.

Again, I would like to say a BIG ‘Thank you’ to our great team and our Great Customers - YOU!

Solid Drafter - New Cabinet Vision Product Planit introduces a new product to the Cabinet Vision product range, Solid Drafter.Solid Drafter was designed as a drafting and estimating tool to be used in conjunction with your current Solid manufacturing solution. Do you have designers and need a tool to get your shop drawings ready for review? Do you have staff estimators and need a tool to get your estimates submitted? Solid Drafter is the solution you need. Solid Drafter has all of the presentation and estimating power of the Solid Advanced solution without the overhead (and product cost) of features only needed by your production staff getting product onto the factory floor

Taking back Control

Carlo Ammendolea from CA Cabinets in Malaga Western Australia feels that he is now back in control of his business. With his Cabinet Vision software from Planit, he now knows that the job will be cut and edged within a few hours of him scheduling it through the factory. By automating things with his new Morbidelli flatbed from Ian Patterson of I&J Machinery, Carlo has “deskilled” these processes and he is no longer reliant on a couple of key personnel. And, with the mortise & tenon construction method setup by his Planit Integrator along with all the construction holes for his drawer systems, assembly is a breeze. When he was being interviewed for this case study, he was asked how things were going. His response was “I’m lovin it!!” Carlo had a good system in place prior to buying Cabinet Vision and he was able to draw and quote jobs very quickly (just floor plans and elevations – no 3D). Alan Gibson, the Planit consultant, conservatively advised Carlo to calculate the drawing time to be the same, and then downstream tasks (3D, cutting lists, material cost lists and labour estimates) would be “Free”. He was wrong. Drawing a job is quicker with Cabinet Vision and when the customer changes their mind about the design, alterations are a cinch. When considering the whole concept of nested based manufacturing, Carlo had a big problem coming to terms with the software investment. He was OK with the machine price – it’s big, it’s noisy, it moves and it makes sawdust – but he struggled justifying the software. Now he realises that it is the software that makes everything move. Without Cabinet Vision, all he would have is a big expensive boat anchor (just joking Ian). CA Cabinets manufacture mid to high end kitchens and construction can include timber rails, veneers, weird angled cabinets and special hardware. It was important that the software could accommodate these requirements without having to compromise on quality. Alan Gibson from Planit was able to show Carlo that Cabinet Vision could be adapted to suit his requirements rather than the other way around.

Another important consideration for Carlo was the level of support he could expect from his software supplier. He spoke to a number of local cabinet makers using the Planit software and he was assured that the support he could expect from Planit was exceptional. Planit are a national company with a local dealer with support personnel based right here in Western Australia. The fact that he could work with the Planit team and communicate “face to face” was an important consideration for Carlo when deciding which way to go. As part of the investment analysis, Carlo figured that if he could realise a 10% improvement in productivity the whole thing would break even. If he could achieve a 20% improvement, he would be better off and if he could achieve a 30% improvement he would be laughing. Well after only three months, Carlo is already enjoying a 30% improvement and we predict that a 50% improvement in productivity is imminent. Now he is really laughing.......

Nicole had a baby girl!Mia Violet Thompson was born on 17/3/2010 3.5 weeks premmie and weighing 2.6kg. She was in the special care nursery for 2 weeks and once her feeding was up to speed she was released from hospital to start her life journey.

Since coming home from hospital, Nicole tells us she has been gaining lots of weight and is now weighs in at a healthy 5.1kg. Mia is now giving lots of smiles and is a great sleeper for Mummy & Daddy. Congratulation to Nicole & Alex on your beautiful baby girl.

Introducing Kristofer Schofield to the Planit familyKris was born in Sutherland hospital (Sydney) in July, 1980 to Australian parents of mixed British, Irish and Finnish ancestry. Kris has lived in Yarrawarrah (Sutherland Shire) his whole life until recently when he moved into the Inner West with his girlfriend.

Kris completed his apprenticeship in Carpentry/Joinery at Budget Stairs and have mainly worked in the building industry. One of Kris’s passions in travel so in 2002 he went to live in Edinburgh, Scotland with his brother Michael for 2 years and had a fantastic time.

After coming home and working for 3 years in the staircase game, manufacturing, quoting and installing, the travel bug returned so he went on to travel to Scotland, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Ireland before settling in Cork City on a year’s working Visa. This is where he met his girlfriend Vivian, an American also working in Cork in the recruitment industry. After travelling extensively together Kris & Vivienne returned home to Australia and have set up home together in Sydney.

Kris has a lot of hobbies and apart from the typical Australian obsession with all things sport, Kris also enjoys photography, hiking and camping along with passions of geography, linguistics and history.

Kris has joined the team at Planit in the Services department as an Integrator. Kris will be working with our customers via our different training & integration programs while supporting the rest of Services team with the other services we offer to our customers.

Home Sweet HomeJamie Silver our Customer Service & Sales Representative for South NSW has bought a unit with his girlfriend Gemma. Proud home owners Jamie & Gemma found a great unit down Cronulla to which they now call home. In the middle of some renovations, painting & new flooring Jamie has taken some photo’s to show us what they have been up to.

Combining work & travelDavid Carr who has recently moved from our Services department as an Integrator to a Special Projects role recently snuck in a quick holiday to Thailand. Spending a couple of “sketchy” days in Bangkok trying to avoid the red shirt protesters he then spent a week with his girlfriend Jodie relaxing in Koh Samui. Dave tells us “a beautiful place, cheap drinks and 40+ degree days were just what he needed”!

Good to see Jamie hard at work!

Jamie used Cabinet vision to work out how much flooring to order & where to make the cut downs/joints.

Double car garage was high on the list of “must haves” for the unit

Congratulations on purchasing your home!

Jodie stayed on for a further 4 weeks volunteering at a wildlife rescue centre a few hours south of Bangkok. During her stay she was lucky enough to work with Elephants, Sun Bears, Otters, Gibbons, Macaques, Langurs, Civets, a Tiger and many other amazing animals. Jodie thoroughly enjoyed her time at the centre and highly recommends the centre to anyone interested in conservation of these beautiful animals.

Little WJohn Whinnen and his wife Lisa are busily preparing the nursery for their new addition, appropriately nicknamed “Little W” due in approximately 10 weeks. Another Leo like John! With Lisa’s tummy growing and her back taking the strain, the duties of preparing the nursery have fallen directly on John’s shoulders. In addition, John has been busy restoring old furniture, one piece being a family heirloom.

John’s Great Grandmother who lived in Gawler, South Australia was given an ornate Morris Chair to nurse her new son, John’s Grandfather. A plaque inscribed with “Presented to Mother” and the year 1915 was attached to the front. When John started on the chair it was in a bad way but whilst removing the old upholstery he found some repairs to the underside had been made via a hessian sugar bag with year 1942 printed on it, the year John’s father was born also in Gawler. Spooky!

With the chair now repaired, re-polished and upholstered John has made it pride of place in the nursery ready for the next generation of the Whinnen family to use..

Update on our Firemen PeteAs you know Peter Carr left us recently to accept a long awaited position at the Fire Brigade. Pete is 4 weeks into the 15 week recruit training program. He is enjoying the training and is exhausted from all the hard work. This week he is practicing the use of breathing apparatus in a room ranging from 100 to 700 degrees! We wish Pete the best of luck in his new adventures.

Planit Australia Website continually improves

Have you visited the Australian Planit website recently? If not, next time you have 5 minutes to spare, having a coffee or a lunch break go to www.au.planit.com. The first change you will notice is to the left hand menu items. The order of menu items has been revised based on feedback from our customers that the Services section of the webpage was sometimes hard to find based on individual’s screen size or resolution settings. We have now moved it 3rd from the top so you never have to scroll down the page to find the Services menu selection

The next change you will notice is again to the Services section of the website.Once you are in the Services section on the right hand side of the page we have created “PODS” which are designed to make it easy for you to be directed to a specific page or function. In the case of Customer Care where our support Technicians get online and view your computer screen via Remote Assistance, our customers have given us some feedback that they found it hard to find where on our website they needed to go to get online with the support technician.

With the creation of the “PODs” on the right hand side on any of the Services website pages you can click on the 1st POD named Remote Assistance and this will take you (when directed by our Support Technician) directly to the logon page. This will help minimize the time it takes for our technicians to get online with you. The other change that has been made to the website is under Products, and to the Cabinet Vision product range. Firstly, Products can now be found 2nd from the top on the left hand menu selection of the webpage, making it easier for people to locate information on our products. Secondly, the new product brochures for Cabinet Vision have been uploaded which highlight the features & benefits of each of the different Cabinet Vision products as you step up through the Cabinet Vision product range. To view the new brochures, once you have selected the Products section from the left menu, if you then select Cabinet Vision this will then take you into the products listing page for Cabinet Vision. Select a product you might be interested in and select the option down towards the bottom of page to download a brochure. As always, if you have some feedback or ideas on our website please email [email protected].

Quick Render Lighting EffectsUsing light sources is important to get the 3D Render view looking its best. You don’t need to spend a large amount of time to get decent effects.

The lights are setup initially in the File – Setup – Render Lighting… area. There are three light types. Directional, Point and Spot. Directional light would be like Sunlight. It shines from afar. Point light is a source that radiates in all directions. Spot lights can be focused. All the light types can be modified after they are placed in the room.

Here is a view with the default lighting. It looks OK but it could use some enhancements.
