TRAINING PROVIDED BY ASHMY HARRIBY

FROM OUR CPT OFFICE TO Mr. TONY

LOOTS

Ashmy provided step by step training using

“dummy” documents on how to frame entries

and to show how Synergy verifies the

information from the hard copy before we

capture the information.

Ashmy and Mr. Tony Loots made up various

test cases of Import and Export shipments in

order to train SARS on the know- how of the

SAD 500 DECLARATIONS.

The test cases were based on the following

information together with the supporting

documents.

• UNDER ENTRY INCORRECT ROE USED

• OVER ENTRY INCORRECT CURRENCY

USED

• CONSIGNMENT CLEARED AS NEW

BUT INDICATES ON THE INVOICE

FROM THE SUPPLIER AS SECOND

HAND

• TEMPORARY IMPORT UNDER REBATE

CODE 490 BUT INDICATES ON THE

SUPPLIER INVOICE HIRE AND LEASE

• RE IMPORT UNDER REBATE CODE

409, MO3 WITH NO VAT PAYABLE TO

SARS

• EURO RATE OF DUTY CLAIMED WITH

THE INCORRECT EURO CERTIFICATE

NUMBER

• EURO CERTIFICATE WITH THE

INCORRECT WEIGHT ON THE

CERTIFICATE AND ON THE SUPPLIER

INVOICE

Mr. Loots was very impressed with how our

system operated and how user friendly it was.

We may see a similar system being developed

by SARS in the near future.

Good morning gents,

I am told by Tony that you have kindly

assisted us by providing test cases for our

training material. It is really appreciated, and I

wanted to thank you for your assistance in

this regard. As we are getting “leaner” with

regards to skilled personnel and as the old

guard gradually goes on pension, it has

become so important to not only invest

in training customs officers, but also to breed

an understanding of what the impact is of

what we do on trade in general and on the

economy.

I am sure that there will be lots of value to be

gained from your work and in general a much

closer collaboration with other trade parties.

A poem written by ROB IRWIN in 1980

(Entry dept) which was published in

Emotional Journeys

THE SEA

Down in the deep blue sea

A fish I’d like to see

And as I sit and look around

The waters I see with fish abound

Darting from a little nook

To savour the bait upon my hook.

A fisherman sits and waits his turn

To catch a fish for money to earn.

A rare shell upon the beach

I find within my reach.

To put a shell against my ear

The echo of the sea I hear.

On the horizon I see a ship

And people jumping off to have a dip.

DURBAN CULTURE

The iconic bunny chow, a generous serving of

curry in bread, and not actually a rabbit, but

best eaten with your hands and to use the

bread to soak up the delicious gravy.

While many classify this dish as one of Indian

origin, you wont find a bunny chow in the

whole of India. Per the indian Consulate in

Durban they have confirmed that Durban has

the highest concentration of Indians outside

of India – 900 000.

Banya was an old name for the Indian

population in Durban and some insist the

term bunny originated from this and chow

was a cliché for food.

So how did this iconic meal come to be in

Durban? It is said that Inidan slaves arrived

by steam ships between 1860 and 1911 and

worked on the British owned sugar

plantations, then know as Natal.

They used the bread as a container and made

what they knew how, but were not able to

access all the ingredients. Over time this has

become a delicious curry dish.

Social Responsibility

Synergy is proud to be associated with Project

Feed the Children for more than 10 years.

“An average of 28 Food parcels are distributed to families, per week, in Cloverdene; 4 food parcels per week in Emaphupheni; and 31 food parcels per month, to widows in Mashiwa. We also supply sandwiches on a daily basis at 3pm, to the Cloverdene and Mashiwa campuses. Emaphupheni campus will be following shortly. We assist, financially, to the Merlewood Crèche in Port Shepstone, with monthly contributions toward food for the kids. Two plates of food supplied daily to pensioners. At the kitchens we prepare and serve 2x nutritious hot meals at 8.30 am and 12pm, to our ECD children as well as many street children, who do not want to be a part of our ECD programme, on a daily basis.”

Synergy also donated a container which they

made into a community library.

A map of the SADC countries that form part

of the SADC-EU EPA.

There was still a need for improvement

in changing the structure of trade

between the Southern African

Development Community (SADC) and

the European Union (EU), said trade and

industry minister, Dr Rob Davies, ahead of

the first EU/SADC Economic Partnership

Agreement Joint Council meeting to be

held in Cape Town tomorrow.

He conceded that South Africa had

managed to increase exports of value-

added products to the EU, thus

contributing to South Africa’s industrial

development objectives, adding however

that more should be done.

Davis said that the first meeting of the

Joint Council provided an opportunity for

the ministers of the SADC EPA states and

the EU to discuss the state of play in the

trade between the parties and how the EPA

could contribute to inclusive and

sustainable development.

The ministers will also consider a number

of procedural issues such as the approval

of the rules of procedures of the various

committees created to oversee the

implementation of the EPA.

“The core objective of the SADC EPA

Group and EU’s joint efforts in

implementing the agreement must be to

ensure that the EPA enables sustainable

development in the SADC EPA states

through changing the structure of trade,

including the fundamental structural

imbalance in the trade between the parties,

and promote value-added trade,” said

Davies.

South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini,

Lesotho, Mozambique and Namibia

signed the Economic Partnership

Agreement (EPA) with the EU in June

2016. The agreement provisionally entered

into force on 10 October 2016, replacing

the trade chapter in the Trade

Development and Cooperation Agreement

(TDCA) between SA and the EU.

Through the EPA South Africa gained

improved market access into the EU for

agricultural products such as wine,

sugar, ethanol and fruit, as well as for

fisheries. SA exports to the EU have

increased from R214 billion in 2015 to

R262 billion in 2017. SA exports to the

EU are led by vehicles which

contributed 26% of total exports in

2017, followed by precious stones and

metals, nuclear reactors, edible fruit

and nuts and ores, slag and ash which

contributed 17%, 8%, 8% and 7%

respectively in the same year.

There’s ‘room for improvement’ in

SADC/EU trade agreement – Davies

The martial arts school my husband and I

belong to is called “Shun Wu Tang Martial

Arts Academy (SWT)” We have been

involved for 2 years 4 months. I have my

Brown belt (4th belt)

There are 7 schools in South Africa,

schools in France and the main school

being in Taiwan.

• We learn Traditional Southern Luohan Kung Fu Style (Traditional Chinese Martial Arts) as well as self defense and discipline.

• We follow a traditional training regimen which is similar to Karate in the sense we do “forms” which is similar to “karta” in karate but Martial Arts is more flowing and flexible and has much more strikes and blocks than Karate.

• There are many techniques taught in the SWT syllabus some of which are Strengthening workout sessions, fitness challenges, grappling, sparring, Tae Kwon Do, Jeet Kwon Do and Muay Thai. We use hand-to-hand and weapons combat.

• Students start from as young as 5 years old and we have students right up until nearly 50 years

• We adhere to strict discipline and rules once in the Kwoon ( training hall) and follow a grading system to judge expertise and earn rank. This system is similar to Karate belt system.

There’s also a website to have a look at

HUMAN RECOURSES-

An induction programme is the process used

within many businesses to welcome

new employees to the company and prepare

them for their new role. ...

An Induction Programme can also include the

safety training delivered to contractors before

they are permitted to enter a site or begin

their work.

An induction brings the staff into an

organisation. It provides an introduction to

the working environment and the set-up of

the employee within the organisation. The

process will cover the employer

and employee rights and the terms and

conditions of employment, culture, history of

the company, health and safety, amongst

other items

At Synergy, within the first week of

employment we provide an induction to make

the new staff member feel welcome and party

of our synergy family. Our SHE committee

assist with contractors.

A good employee induction process can lead

to happier employees, and hence increase

the productivity of a firm.

Tips to prevent Hijacking

1. Your elbow is the strongest point on

your body – use it

2. If a robber asks for your wallet/purse

– do not hand it to them – toss it

away and then run in the other

direction – he is more interested in

the wallet

3. If you are ever thrown into a trunk of

a car, kickout the tail lights and stick

your arm out of the hole- wave like

crazy

4. Do not get into your car and then

message on your phone or check your

shopping list or eat etc.- predators are

watching

5. When getting into your car in a

parking lot, keep looking around you,

look inside your car. Do not park next

to vans or if a van is parked next to

you when your return, be vigilant or

ask security to join you.

6. Do not take a lift alone and be careful

when using stairwells.

7. If the predator has a gun and you are

not under their control, run as the

predator will only hit a running target

(you) 4 in 100 times

8. If someone is in the car with a gun to

your head, gun the engine and speed

into anything, wrecking the car as the

air bag will save you. If they are in the

back seat they will get the brunt

9. Unfortunately women cannot be

sympathetic, predators prey on this

and you will be abducted.

Stay alert and safe and look out for

yourself, family and neighbors

Common issues in the Cold

store

As the world’s specialised ‘reefer ship’ fleet continues to decline, it is estimated that containers are today utilised for up to 75% of all temperature-controlled cargo shipments. The process of correctly packing, handling and monitoring both equipment and cargo is one that will continue to demand attention.

The majority of insurance claims involving perishable cargo are found to occur due to:

1. Confusion over Celsius and Fahrenheit

2. Poor communication of requirements (plus versus minus temperatures)

3. Failure to monitor or plug in the cargo Transport unit throughout its journey.

Instances of ambient cargoes, such as bread and chocolate, being mistakenly shipped in deep freeze conditions or conversely cargoes of fish and animal carcasses requiring to be shipped under deep freeze conditions below -18DegC, arriving with the consignee at +18DegC are all too common. Inevitably, these simple mistakes result in a dramatic deterioration of the cargo, leading to claims of total loss and often disposal costs.

"Often the simplest of errors result in high value losses"

While the Celcius scale is most commonly used globally, certain regions (such as USA) or trades may utilise Fahrenheit. Adding to the confusion, 0°C is a widely recognised temperature setting for chilled cargoes, whilst 0°F is a widely recognised temperature setting for frozen cargoes. Again, accurate communication is key to avoiding potential losses.

Once the shipping instructions have been made clear, the container needs to be functioning properly. Reefer equipment should be regularly inspected for conformity, especially prior to loading and such units

should be serviced and maintained regularly. Visual checks for damage should also be carried out prior to packing. Damage to the internal vents, perhaps caused by previous poor packing, can severely affect the efficiency of air flow through the transport unit, which in turn can result in a failure to reach the set point temperature.

It is also essential to check regularly that the data logger equipment is fully functional. It is now possible to monitor this data remotely and for warnings to be raised when temperatures fluctuate unexpectedly. However, such technology is of little value if the data logger itself is not operational.

"Time is of the essence and can have a dramatic effect in mitigating a loss."

Pre-packing checks and correct packing play an important role. The CTU operator is responsible for ensuring that the provided CTU is in good condition, clean and free from odour. The packer also needs to be satisfied that the unit is clean1. The cargo must be evenly distributed with due care taken to ensure a free flow of air and pallets stacked safely and securely. Crucially, cargo should be cooled to the desired carrying temperature prior to loading; cargo packed at elevated temperatures is unlikely to achieve the desired setting and is at risk of rejection by the consignee. Whilst prevention is better than cure, if things do go wrong when dealing with temperature sensitive cargoes, time is of the essence and can have a dramatic effect in mitigating a loss. Early appointment of an expert to assess a cargo alleged to have suffered temperature abuse can often result in at least a portion of the cargo being either accepted or saved by means of a salvage sale. Further, there are specialist distressed cargo service providers able to perform micro-biological analysis on cargo to determine whether or not it is safe to enter the food chain
