HSA will commemorate this on January 27. February marks Black History month and our school is planning a special luncheon program on Friday, February 13 at the high school. We are now in the 2nd semester of the 2014/15 school year. Tutoring is available after school for students seeking additional help. Please visit hsas.org, for updates and scheduling information. Robotics Team 6440 - A Team to Watch! The Horizon Science Academy Cleveland (HSA) Robotics team, "The Metallic Controllers," successfully competed in the Northeast Ohio First Tech Challenge (FTC) Regional Qualifying Tournament on Saturday, January 3 at the Cuyahoga Community College Eastern Campus. Following many rounds of competition the team advanced to the FTC Ohio State Championship scheduled for February 14th, 2015. The team also took home the Winning Alliance Trophy. Team members are: Captain Nicholas Vander Linden; Mechanical Engineer/Builder Batuhan Arslan; Programmer/Electrician Kamal Abdullah; Secretary/Outreach Coordinator: Tyree Lee Gozalez; Builder: Gafaru Kafaru. The team is coached by Computer Science teacher Haci Karahasanoglu. Project Lead the Way

Designs Puzzle Cube

Project Lead The Way- Principles of Engineering and EngineeringResearch and Design Students visited University of Akron College of

Engineering Department. The group toured the campus, a residentialhall, wellness center, and library. After the tour Dr. Donald Visco,

Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, presented on the Collegeof Engineering and the students toured the Engineering Department,met with robotics teams, and saw the Concrete Canoe Team Lab.

90 Students Take "One Hour of Code " Challenge

On Wednesday December 10th, more than 90 students at HorizonScience Academy Cleveland High School practiced One Hour of Codeprovided by Code.org. This was an international effort to support thestudy of coding. For the majority of the students this was their firstventure into coding and/or computer programming. Karen Leak, Early

Career Engineering Development Manager at Rockwell Automation,spent the day with our students assisting where needed.

Students enrolled in ourProject Lead theWay-Introduction toEngineering coursepresented their Puzzle CubeDesign Challenge Project inthe school rotunda onDecember 19. The two-week assignmentbegan with students writinga Design Brief, sketchingpossible cube parts, andcreating each part inAutodesk Inventor (3DModelling Software).Students created a puzzlecube by using 3/4 in woodblocks. Fourteen studentsexplained their designprocesses and puzzle cube.

Korean War Veterans

Recognition Program

On December 15, our USArmy JROTC cadetsattended the Department ofVeterans Affairs KoreanWar Veterans Recognitionprogram. Our cadetspresented and posted ourNation's Colors. We alsoassisted servingrefreshments to theveterans.

The Boys Varsity Basketball team is 7-1 so far this season, with keywins coming over Conneaut High School, Independence High Schooland defending Lake Effect Conference Champion Andrews Osborne.The team is led by Seniors Marlon Lopez, Eric Maxwell, Dionte Pearl

and Denzel Jones. Marlon Lopez has averaged just over 20 points per

game over the last 5 games and Eric Maxwell has averaged just under20 points per game over that same stretch. The boys JV team isundefeated so far this season.

The Lady Dragon Basketball team is off to a 5-2 record, including anundefeated record in the Lake Effect Conference. The Lady Dragonsare young, with no seniors on the roster this season. The team is led bySophomore Lyric Hampton, who is averaging near a double-double

this season. The rest of the team has seen a balanced scoring attackled by Junior Margret Wherry, Sophomores Brittany Hampton and

Massandje Boduo and Fresman Ta'Juanna Naim. The Ladies are

looking to repeat as conference champions, which would be the firsttime in conference history that has occurred.

HSA Ski Club

The HSA Ski Club went tothe Alpine Ski Resort inearly January for our firstski outing of the schoolyear. Ms. Heffernan and1SG Takacs took threeHSA students to ski andsnowboard. Students skiedand snowboarded for fivehours and had a memorabletime.

Twenty-six Ivy League Mentorship (IMP) students and their volunteermentor teachers participated in an IMP Winter Study Camp at MaumeeBay State Park on December 5-7, 2014. 9th-11th grade students took a full-length ACT test before noon. Mr.Emre and Ms. Polat reviewed the math and science portions of the testand answered student questions. Mr. Orcun took the 12th graders toMichigan for a college and museum visit. Our next IMP Spring ACT Study Camp will be held on March 26-30,2015 at the Punderson State Park. This will be the last study campbefore the ACT scheduled for April 18, 2015.
