Part Two: Descendants of Anthony M. TERRELL

EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the second of a multi-part series on the ancestors and descendants of Anthony M. TERRELL. This pro-

ject was initiated by lifetime member, Mrs. Helen Nunnally in order to provide a complete record for her immediate line. Other

parts in later issues will contain more known descendants of Anthony M. TERRELL. This work is mostly information supplied to

Don C. Terrill and the Society by Mrs. Nunnally and her cousins. Numbers in super-script

following names refer to end notes indicat-

ing where Mr. Terrill received the information pertaining to that person. Information on the descendants of Martha TERRELL was

added by #492 Cheri Gentile. We thank her for her valuable contribution to this work. DFB

THANK YOU There are so many people who helped me pull this work together. I hereby acknowledge their contributions and express my heart-

felt thanks. It would take a book to name them all. I thank each and everyone of you.

To my husband, Jim, who gave up a lot of time. Who never questioned my spending in all my years of researching; and who, after

all these years, has "caught the genealogy bug."

To my father who always taught me to stick with anything I started and to my mother who gave me the love and support needed to

finish a job. I only wish that they could be here today to see the result of their efforts.

To Paul Dale WILSON, deceased, who furnished much of the SHIPP genealogy and leads. To. Billy Scattergood for getting me

started in this addictive hobby which is much loved by all who have caught the "bug."

To Don C. TERRILL, president of the Terrell Society of America, Inc. who took the information that I sent to him and entered it

into a computer genealogy program along with information that he had gleaned from other sources. His efforts via that program

provided the framework upon which this work has been built. Also for the hours that he spent searching census records which add

credence to this family history. This greatly simplified the task of compiling and editing this work by Dan BRINSON, secretary &

newsletter editor of the Terrell Society of America, Inc.

This could never have gone to print without the help of Bettie Lou COOPER Miller who came here to help me proof all of the ma-

terial that I had gathered. Thanks to Donnie L. COOPER who supplied information on the largest family in the John Wesley

TERRELL line. Thanks to all of the cousins that sent in what they had, what they knew of others, and who labored to acquire ma-

terial that I could not possibly have acquired without their help.

Lastly, this is not just my material. This contains material that has been submitted by a very large family. All have submitted this in

the name of love. For that, I thank each of you and hope you enjoy the finish of our "little" family. We have the most loving and

close-knit family that I have ever known.

Love, hugs, and blessings,

Helen TERRELL Nunnally & Jim NUNNALLY

Editor's note: Each person in this article has an individual number. Anthony M. TERRELL is number 1. Separate numbers are not assigned to

spouses. Numbers are assigned to children. When there is more information on the child a plus (+) appears before the number. Another

section beginning with that number contains additional information. The balance of the listing is in numerical order. For example, the numbering

skips from 1 (Anthony) to 3 (William, son of Anthony) because there is no more information on 2 (Jane, daughter of Anthony). Numbers in super

script after the first name are the number of generations this person is from Robert And Agnes of Hagbourne, England. Numbers in super script after the

surname of an individual is the number of an endnote indicating where Don C. Terrill obtained the information. Numbers beginning with "G" (G1-

-G26 for example) are descendents provided by Cheri Gentile and were not in Don's database. I added these numbers in case Cheri or another de-

scendant is able to continue those lines at a later date. DFB

TERRELL-TALLEY FAMILIES

From Cherokee County [TX] History This history must start with Anthony M. TERRELL and Willey TALLEY, and although their story is not unique either from those who lived in

yesteryears or those living today, it is an important part of the TERRELL history. One might say that it is the beginning.

Anthony M. TERRELL, Sr. (1790--1870) was b. in Virginia, according to Marshall County Ala. census records; and, although he is found on few

censuses, he seems to have children, but never a wife in the household. Of those there, one could have been his wife, but certainly would not have

been old enough to have been the mother of his children.

His love and concern for their welfare shows in his will, for he named most of his children, his grandchildren of his deceased children, and tells us

who they were with and where they resided, giving the county and state. Some were living with their mothers, others were with their grandparents.

No wife is mentioned, but estate papers name Jesse J. and wife Martha, Anthony Jr., deceased, (children named), William, deceased, (children

named), Elizabeth Peters, Jane Sandridge, and John TERRELL, a minor under the age of 14 living with mother Jerusha SHIPP Terrell in

Marshall Co. Ala.

Anthony M. TERRELL m. Willey TALLEY, daughter of Daniel TALLEY (b. in Virginia) in Halifax Co. VA., Oct. 30, 1817. In Daniel's will,

Halifax Co., VA, Will Book 13, pp, 348-386, he names wife, Mary Mickey Elizabeth Talley; sons Branch, Payton, Daniel, and daughters, Eliz-

abeth Nash, Mary Mickey Elizabeth Terrell, Willey Terrell, and the children of Rhoda Boyd (probably deceased). It is rumored that Willey

divorced Anthony and later married again but as of this date, it has not been proved factually.

There seems to be an unrevealed connection between the TALLEY, SHIPP, TERRELL, and BAILEY families. It is not without interest that

Daniel TALLEY's will named a William BAILEY of Virginia to act as security for the children of Rhoda Boyd. In Anthony TERRELL's will

[estate papers] Hiram BAILEY and James BAIN of Alabama were appointed by the court to see that the land was sold at a fair price. We know

that Hiram BAILEY of Alabama was the grandfather of Jerome BAILEY of Bullard.

Anthony has encouraged us to expend a little more energy in the future [present?] for the future and the past.

Generation No. 2 3. William11 TERRELL (Anthony M.10, Richard C.9, William8, James7, William6, Richmond5, Robert4 Tirrold, William3 Tyrrold, David2,

5. Martha11 TERRELL (Anthony M.10, Richard C.9, William8, James7, William6, Richmond5, Robert4 Tirrold, William3 Tyrrold, David2,

Robert1)9,10,11 was born ca. 1826 in North Carolina, & died Before 1877 in Alabama. She married Jesse J. TERRELL 12 27 Mar 1851 in Marshall

Co., Ala (his second wife). He was born on 29 December 1820 in Virginia and died 16 April 1884 in Marshall County, Alabama. He

was buried in King's Chapel Cemetery, Guntersville, Alabama.. He was son of Charles R. TERRELL & Margaret "Peggy" WILLIAMS

according to information supplied by Mr. Max. Bryant (#366). Jesse married first Eliza J. THOMAS 8 Apr 1840, Marshall Co, Ala. She

must have died before 1850 as Jesse was in the household with his father in Illinois at the time of the 1850 census. It has always been a "family story" that Jesse J. TERRELL, son of Charles R. TERRELL married his first cousin, Martha TERRELL, daugh-

ter of Anthony M. TERRELL. Well, Martha would not have been Jesse J's first cousin, but would have been a first cousin one generation re-

moved. Many people get confused with this particular relationship. Max Bryant.

Cheri Gentile shared the following info about her attempt to locate King's Chapel Cemetery. Some time ago when I was doing Terrell re-

search on Guntersville , I talked to someone at the library about the King's Chapel Cemetery. Although this person was not able to

give me much information about the cemetery, he did give me the name of a "Miss Terrell" in Guntersville and said that she knew all

about the Terrell's from way back. He said she's probably in her 80's. Anyway he gave me a telephone number for her. I tried to con-

tact her a few times but wasn't successful. The number is (205) 878-5289.

+ 17 i. James Monroe12 TERRELL, born 1849 in Alabama. (son of Jesse and his first wife Eliza J. THOMAS)

Children of Martha TERRELL & Jessie TERRELL are:

+ 18 ii. Richmond/Richard M. TERRELL, born ca. 1852 in Alabama. Gentile has his name as Richard. Don Terrill comments: In

the 1860 census I copy as "Richmond", in the 1870 census I copy as "Richard", in the 1880 census I copy as

"Richard," in the 1900 census I cannot find him (yet). + 19 iii. Margaret C. TERRELL 13, born 1855 in Alabama. She married James TAYLOR; born 1849 in Alabama. See census be-

low.

+ 20 iv. Alan Brinsfield TERRELL, born 14 Mar 1858 in Gunterville, Marshall Co, Ala.; died 17 Dec 1933 in Texas.

21 v. George W. TERRELL, born October 1860 in AL. In the 1870 and 1880 George is listed in Jesse's household as his

son. In 1900 George is living in Marshall Co and says his date of birth is Oct 1860 (ED 94, S 12, L 79).

22 vi. Jesse D. TERRELL, born 1864 in Marshall Co, Ala. 1880 and 1900 census show him as Jesse D. Terrell

23 vii. Willie/Willine F. TERRELL, born 1868 in Marshall Co, Ala. "Willie" is a girl's name sometimes found in census rec-

ords; "Willine" is a one-of-a-kind. Don (Gentile lists name as Willine F. DFB)

Charles R. Terrell (1801-1860). is found in these census records:

1830 Va., Pittsylvania Co, p. 397

1840 Ala., Marshall Co, p. 107

1850 Illinois, Peoria Co, p. 231A:

Susan 7 F W Ala. no later censuses to determine with whom they lived. DFB

James M. 1 M W Ala.

Don Terrill: I think this clearly establishes Jesse as the son of Charles; but what about James M. Terrell (age 1)? This could be seen

as establishing James as the son of Charles, but then Margaret/Peggy would be about age 51/52 at the time of James' birth (low

probability). James could also be the infant son of Jesse and his late wife Eliza Thomas (m. 1840). I believe this second explanation

is the correct one, because, upon returning to Alabama, James lives in Jesse's household in 1860, even though Charles is living very

nearby and even though Charles' other unmarried children are still living in his household.

1860 Ala., Marshall Co, p. 881: both Charles and Jesse are approximately adjacent (same census page). This gives a very high prob-

ability that Jesse is the son of Charles.

They are also side-by-side in 1840 (same census page), since Jesse had married and established his own household. There is a very

low probability that Jesse is the brother of Charles and thus the son of Jesse TERRELL (1776-1852) and Nancy STRANGE

(1780).

TERRELL-TALLEY FAMILIES

From Cherokee County [TX] History Peyton TERRELL b. 1832 TN according to census, d. before 1870. It is said by those living in Alabama that Peyton died of smallpox and is

buried at King's Hollow on Sand Mountain. Although many lovely, old above-ground vaults -- some of them made of rock, some of cement, and

some a combination of the two -- are there, most remain nameless.

Peyton m. Jerusha SHIPP (b. Feb 7, 1841, d. Sep. 18, 1904) on July 21, 1859, in Marshall Co. AL, at "Abner SHIPP's, home of the bride's par-

ents." After Peyton d. Jerusha and John lived with her father until she m. William BERRY on March 28, 1874. She is buried in Martling Ceme-

tery on Sand Mountain in the Guntersville and Albertville, AL area.

A search for history and pictures was almost fruitless, with the exception of finding a photograph of Jerusha in Alabama and one of her father, Ab-

ner, in Farmersville, TX. With little results, efforts to find other pictures and history, after an exhaustive search, have been suspended.

Child of Peyton TERRELL & Jerusha SHIPP is:

+ 33 i. John Wesley12 TERRELL, born 10 Oct 1860 in Marshall Co, Ala.; died 5 Apr 1930 in Bullard, Smith Co, Texas.

If Jerusha Ann SHIPP and Peyton TERRELL had other children living in 1870, Alabama Probate Law would have required that they be listed

and receive a portion of the estate of Anthony that went to Peyton By 1880, John Wesley TERRELL had moved out on his own as shown by the

next census citation.

The above census does not prove that all the children listed are children of Jerusha SHIPP Terrell Berry. Due to his age, it is probable that Wil-

liam BERRY had one or more previous marriages and may have had children by earlier spouse(s). Without an exact date of death for Peyton

TERRELL, we cannot determine when Jerusha was free to get together with BERRY. Don Terrill commented that he did not find their marriage

in Alabama Marriage Records. If the date of March 28, 1874 cited in the Cherokee County History is correct, either all except the last child are by

his previous wife or they were consorting before the marriage. Unless some of the BERRY descendants surface with the "rest of the story," we

may never know who belongs to whom.

Parents of Alan Brinsfield TERRELL were born in VA & NC, not IL; evidently this is an error on the part of the census taker as the names and

Editor's Note: Her stone has her name carved as Elen, and it is spelled that way in the family

Bible photocopies. This spelling was used by Mrs. Nunnally in her writings. Their marriage

license, No. 155, Page 445, Book 7 marriage records of Marshall County Alabama indicates

that they were married on Dec. 23, 1883 at H. J. Wilson's by E A. Gardner. Her name is

spelled as Ellen there. Marriage bond dated 18 Dec. 1883 and signed by John W. Terrell &

William Berry lists her name as Ellen. In view of the fact that both her signature and official

documents spell the name with double "l," I have changed the spelling in this document to

Ellen. DFB

TERRELL-WILSON FAMILIES

From Cherokee County [TX] History John Wesley TERRELL (b. Oct 10, 1860, Marshall Co. AL, d. April 5, 1930) son of Peyton

and Jerusha SHIPP TERRELL, grew up on Sand Mountain at Martling near the Albertville

and Guntersville, AL area.

John Wesley TERRELL was the first Terrell family [of this line] to come to Texas, on horseback. A story often told by Jerusha was the fear she

had when as her son was leaving. She saw the hoof of the horse he was riding slip as he jumped a small, but almost bottomless crevasse enroute to

his new adventure and what would soon be his permanent home in Smith Co. TX.

John m. Ellen Lou WILSON (b. Aug 3, 1868, d. May 21, 1960) Dec. 23, 1883, in Marshall Co. AL. She was the daughter of Millicent Maria

HINDS (b. Mar 14, 1848, d. Feb. 1908) and Hezekiah Jefferson WILSON (b. Feb. 19, 1841, d. Oct. 30, 1927)

does not go that far.

TERRELL came to Texas in 1884. He stopped off to visit his mother's SHIPP brothers in Farmersville, TX, then settled in the Eureka community

near Bullard in Smith Co. TX. There he waited for his wife to follow him. He settled less than seven miles from Jerome BAILEY's home where

he saw his dream fulfilled of having a large farm where he could turn the soil to feed his family.

Traveling by covered wagon with her parents and her grandmother, Margaret GULLION Wilson, Ellen took six months to get from Alabama to

Texas. Soon after they arrived, John and Ellen's first son was born.

1556

John Wesley TERRELL was a member of

Masonic Lodge No. 785 in Bullard, but in

1928, with the Depression just beginning, he

was dismissed for non-payment of dues. His

standards were high, his family and commu-

nity respected him for his leadership, and

except for a short-lived partnership in the

cotton ginning business, he was a farmer all

his life. He served his community to the

fullest. Methodist ministers and their fami-

lies frequented the TERRELL home. His

home was always filled with children and

young people.

When a neighbor was down with influenza,

John saw a need; so, the family, field hands,

wagons, mules, and tools headed for the

crops which needed working desperately. As

his "caravan" moved along, everyone sing-

ing, he looked back and saw others joining to

lend a helping hand.

Men went to the fields; girls did the churn-

ing, washing, and ironing; boys cut wood,

cared for animals, and drew water from the

well. Smaller children gathered eggs,

cleaned the yard with their brush brooms,

and wives gave baths, cooked food, and su-

pervised household chores for the ill family.

When another neighbor's barn burned, John followed his philosophy of one for you, one for me. While the boys divided the corn, hay, peanuts,

piglets, and picked two cows for loan, the girls divided quilts they had made, food they had canned, doilies they had embroidered, and clothes they

had made.

Perhaps he knew that some day the shoe might be on the other foot. Indeed, his home, later destroyed by fire, included in its ashes our family Bi-

bles, photos, and history.

Ellen made us a part of her life. We were asked occasionally to cut a new tooth brush for her little brown bottle with the four notches on the bot-

tom, or to bring her the blue felt house shoes she wore most of her life because of crippling arthritis. She was a good cook and homemaker, a won-

derful wife, mother, friend, and romantic who loved to read True Love and True Romances.

She gave us a lineage that takes us all the way back to the Mayflower with five passengers aboard: John ALDEN, Priscilla MOULLINS, Priscil-

la's parents, and Frances COOKE. Our Magna Charta line comes from Priscilla's grandmother, Mahieu, who descends from Sire De QUIN-

CEY, a baron credited with rewriting the Magna Charta. Joseph HINDS, Ebeneezer BYRAM, Jeremiah RODEN, Isaac OAKS and Thomas

SHIPP are Revolutionary War soldiers given by both our grandparents.

There are some things families enjoy remembering. Ellen had the most beautiful blue eyes, eyes you couldn't forget. John, sounding like a herd of

elephants, awoke everyone with what he called his "two little sweet ones," size 11 shoes, graduating to a size 12 police shoe. The only shoes which

would fit his feet were long and wide.

We miss them, their laughter, sense of humor, and the wisdom they took with them. They instilled truth, kindness, and purpose into our lives.

Obituary for John W. Terrell from Tyler Morning Telegraph, April 6, 1930 indicated that he was 69 years, 5 months, and 25 days of age when he

died almost suddenly at his home four miles west of town. Burial was in Bullard Cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. T. P. Hendricks &

W. L. Shuttlesworth at the family residence. A large crowd showed the sorrow which the death of this man cast on the community when it be-

came generally known Saturday. He spent his life farming and was active until two or three weeks ago when he contracted influenza. He was a

member of the Masonic lodge, the Odd Fellows and the Methodist church. The beautiful floral offerings gave mute testimony to the esteem in

which the community held this man. Pallbearers were not listed. Survivors are covered elsewhere. His death certificate recorded in Vol. 5, on

page 294 of the Smith Co. Death Records contains personal info given by his son H. P. Terrell. Attending physician whose signature is not legible,

but appears to be C. B. Raltur indicated that he saw him on April 4 & 5, 1930; that death occurred at 9:15 a.m. from cerebral hemorrhage with high

blood pressure contributing. There was no autosy, diagnosis was made from symptoms.

Obituary for Mrs. J. W.[Ellen] Terrell from an undated clipping indicted that she was 91 and died at her home on Rt. 1, Bullard, Saturday after a

lengthy illness. She had 121 direct descendants. Funeral services were held at County Line Baptist Church with Rev. Albert Dusek conducting

and burial was in Bullard Cemetery. She had been a member of the Bullard Methodist Church for 75 years. Grandsons served as pallbearers, but

were not named. Other survivors are listed elsewhere. These included children, 37 grandchildren, 67 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great

grandchildren.

Her death certificate in Vol. 11, page 246 of Smith Co. Death Records originally indicated her name to be Ellen Malvineinie Terrell based upon

information given by Mattie Green. Parents are listed correctly. Marjorie Ferrell Roper, M.D. indicated that death was caused by Dehydration

due to Chronic Gastro-Enteritis and due to arthritis. On 08/08/1975, Helen Terrell Nunnally had this death certificate amended to show her name

as Ellen Lou Terrell and her DOB at August 3, 1868 instead of 1869. Documentation included affidavit from Mrs. Nunnally and certification of

marriage record as shown in the Bible, signed by Mattie B. Green, daughter.

Ellen's Last Will and Testament is recorded in Vol 162, pages 299 & 300 Smith County Texas records. She signed the will and spelled her name

ELLEN, not Elen. Her will provides for payment of all just debts. Division of property into 8 equal parts as follows: a. One part to my son, H. P.

Terrell, Sr.; b. One part to my daughter, Mae Terrell Shipp; c. One part to my daughter, Mattie Terrell Green; d. One part to my daughter, Jerusha

daughter, Cathaleen Honea, was appointed Independent Executrix without bond, and excluding action in the County Court in relation to the settle-

ment of said estate [beyond actions required by probate laws.] It was signed 1 May, A. D. 1948.

The family held at least one reunion on July 8, 1973 at the Cedars of Lebanon Club House on Copeland Road in Tyler, TX. That reunion was or-

ganized by Helen Terrell Nunnally and her sister Mrs. Paul Manziel was listed as contact person.

Information supplied to Mrs. Nunnally duing July 1975 by Harvey C. Byrd, Grand Secretary of the Masonic Lodge Library in Waco, TX indicated

that J. W. Terrell of Lodge 785 in Bullard was initiated 9-8-1900; passed 10-6-00; Raised 11-3-00 and Dimitted 3-6-28.

THE JOHN AND ELLEN WILSON TERRELL FAMILY REUNION

CEDAR OF LABANON CLUB HOUSE

OLD COPELAND ROAD, TYLER, TEXAS 1973

Among the leading citizens of Eureka, the name John TERRELL had a familiar Ring. He was born 10 October 1860 to Jerusha SHIPP Terrell

and Payton TERRELL in Albertville, Marshall county, Alabama. He was reared in the Martling community on sand mountain. There he met and

married his lovely Bride Ellen Lou WILSON born 3 august 1868 with their wedding taking place at the home of the bride's parents on 23 Decem-

ber 1883. This union was blessed with three boys and seven girls, Hezekiah Peyton, Millie Elvira, Lue Berta, Mae Belle, Mattie Victoria,

Grady, Mary Jerusha, Malvenevie (Nevie) John Hunter and Hayden Edward TERRELL. All of the children had double names but We have

never been able to discover the other name of baby girl, Grady, and Malvenevie.

John's parents, Jerusha Ann SHIPP and Peyton TERRELL were married 20 July 1859. It is said that Payton died of small pox when John was

ten years of age. (the only proof we have that John is the son of Payton lies in the Estate records of John's grandfather Anthony which states that

John was Under the age of 14 and does not mention any other children, (which denounces that there were any other children). It is hoped that by

the next reunion, The complete history of the TERRELL family will be known.

John Wesley TERRELL came to Texas in the early or middle part of 1884. A SHIPP cousin had gotten in a fight over a girl and being outnum-

bered, John stepped in to help. A rock was thrown by someone in the crowd and it was blamed on John and his cousin. Going by the house to tell

his wife goodbye, he fled with his cousin to Texas, almost dropping off in a crevice in the Mountain. That is where the chase was stopped. John

stopped off at Farmersville to visit some of his SHIPP relatives. Ellen, her parents, Hezekiah and Millie and Hezekiah's mother all left for Texas

by covered wagon. (there were probably others on this trip but we have no knowledge of who they were). We do know they arrived just in time

for the birth of John and Ellen's first child, Hezekiah, taking better than six months to make the trip.

Being a man of high standards and in spite of his strict and stern ways, John's grandchildren feared him, but at the same time, loved and respected

him. He demanded more from them than they felt they could give. However, it is the writer's opinion that trying to Live up to his expectations,

made us all very strong. He demanded much from everyone, including his hired hands, most of them colored.

He loved his large farm and cared for it to the best of his ability, feeding his family well from the seeds he had planted. Strangers were always

welcome...the needs of his fellow man were readily taken care of -- lard, canned goods, canned meats, milk, butter and other things were made

available to those who had lost their home and even to those less fortunate than he. Knowing what it was like to be alone and poor, helping others

was his advice to his children. Though this man's financial means were small, he stood very tall to all who really knew him.

The land that he loved so much was probably his greatest achievement. He turned the earth many times to acquire the property of his choice, per-

haps fulfilling a long and carefully planned dream that some day he would own and toil the earth that someday would be his.

John and Ellen loved their home, their children and friends made a good showing at the Sunday "dinner table." A story told by many of his sisters

and since Hunter was raised with mostly girls, they would tease him and dare him to do things. Back in those days, the children ate last, and the

only thing the preacher left were the wings, back etc. No good meat. Had I been grandma, I would have cooked two batches of chicken...one for

the children and one for the guest. The Methodist preacher often visited the TERRELL home and the children often wished for some of the best

parts of the chicken. They had Hunter to go through the house yelling "save us some of that good stuff". Big daddy excused himself saying he had

a small chore to take care of. -- out behind the wash house.

Big daddy TERRELL as we all knew him made a name for his family. That name has been passed on down to us. It is a name to be respected but

more than that, a name that requires respect from all of us. Many of us were deprived of knowing this great man for on 5 April 1930, death swept

him from us, yet even today, that name, his name, lives on -- his community height still stands just as tall.

We were blessed with knowing grandma TERRELL however, at least most of us. Ellen TERRELL was an even more petite woman in her later

years because of crippling arthritis. We remember her best by: her little blue felt house shoes; her love for reading true love and romance maga-

zines; and the brown bottle with four little notches on the bottom of her snuff jar. Some of us may have been privileged too recall with pride when

we were asked to cut her a new brush for her snuff jar. We were saddened by her death which came 21 May 1960.

John belonged to the Masons while Ellen belonged to the Rebecca's. Unfortunately, when big daddy died, due to the depression he had been

dropped for non payment of dues and Ellen had been dropped from the rebukes for the same reason.

They, John and Ellen Lou WILSON TERRELL would have been proud this day. We all had joined in their memory to attend the John and Ellen

TERRELL reunion of 1973.

The most I can do for my friend is simply be his friend. I have no wealth to bestow on him. If he knows that I am happy in loving him, he will want

no other reward. Is not friendship divine in this?

POSSIBLE CORRECTION ANCESTORS OF ANTHONY

Dan,

Please consider the following information and arguments

regarding information listed in the latest TERRELL Trails.

Listed in Generation No. 2 on page 1508 is Jesse A. TER-

RELL, second child of Richard C. TERRELL and Eliza-

beth ?. Listed as source 11 for Jesse is an 1830 census of

North Carolina. I believe this is the wrong Jesse. I have

attached what I believe to be the 1820 through 1850 census

records of Jesse TERRELL. I have never found him listed

with the middle initial (A.). I did not look at the source rec-

ord above but the initial probably came from that record.

I believe the correct record is in Pittsylvania County, Virginia

as shown on my attached file. Listed adjacent to Jesse in the

1830 census is Chas R. TERRELL. I believe this to be the

son of Jesse TERRELL and his first wife Nancy

STRANGE. I am a descendant of Charles R. TERRELL. I

cannot find conclusive proof that Charles R. is the son of

Jesse.

It has always been a "family story" that Jesse J. TERRELL,

son of Charles R. TERRELL married his first cousin, Mar-

tha TERRELL, daughter of Anthony M. TERRELL.

Well, Martha would not have been Jesse J's first cousin, but

would have been a first cousin one generation removed.

Many people get confused with this particular relationship.

I just thought I would try to help clear up the idenity of Jesse

TERRELL, son of Richard C. TERRELL.

Husband's General Notes

The census records for 1790, 1800 & 1810 have not be locat-

ed for Jesse TERRELL. The 1820 census of Pittsylvania

County, Virginia shows a Jesse TERRELL as Head of

Household. There are seven other individuals shown in this

household (3 male & 4 female). Jesse was born 12 February

1776 and would have been 44 years old at the time of this

census. There is one male listed for the age span 26 to 45 and

this is presumed to be Jesse. It is also presumed that since

Jesse's first marriage was on 5 Dec 1797 that none of the

children would have been more than 23 years of age. Nancy

Ann STRANGE was born about 1766, 10 years older than

Jesse or age 54. There is no female listed of age greater than

26 years old. It is presumed that Nancy predeceased this cen-

sus and that the seven other listings are the children of Jesse

and Nancy (Strange) TERRELL. It is also presumed that

there were at least two male children not shown in this

household at the time of this census (Julius B. and Charles

R. TERRELL).

Military Service: None

There is some question about when Jesse and his family

moved to Williamson County, Tennessee. He first appeared

on the tax list there in about 1837. He is listed in the 1830

census on Pittsylvania County, Virginia and is shown there as

giving consent to the marriage of his daughter Edney in April

1832. Of the seven children listed in the 1820 census, three

have not been identified (one female and two male).

Farmer

Wife's General Notes

Nancy Ann (Strange) TERRELL probably died before

1820. She is not listed in the 1820 census with Jesse TER-

RELL and seven others (presumed children).

I'm new at genealogy and discovered your site after

going into ancestry.com. I've always thought we

were probably related to people with variations on

the spelling, and this shows we probably are.

Around here I also know there is TYRRELL.

I have found TARRELL ancestors back to Eng-

land, born in 1835, all with this same spelling. We

have quite a large number of TARRELL ancestors

and descendants who live or lived in the Canistota,

Salem, Marion, Bridgewater, South Dakota areas.

It also looks like the John TARRELL mentioned

above born in 1835 in England, migrated to Wis-

consin. My great-grandfather, Moses TARRELL,

was a son of that John TARRELL.

I will go through some of your sites at a later time

Hi Don I was wondering if you had any info on the

TERRILL's from Breckenrige and Chilcothe MO.

My great great grandfather Thomas S. TERRILL

born in 1863. 1920 census states Thomas being

born in Iowa but him putting IL as his state of birth

he married Mamie MC CULLUM in MO their

children were Frank (my grandfather) Fred,

Mary.

My grandfather Frank married Colene DISH-

MAN their children Robert, Ina, Ilene, Wilma,

Ralph, Floyd, Max I want to know who Thomas TERRILL's father

was or what TERRILL line to follow. My father

had said my cousin traced the family line back to

England. An ancestor was knighted by King Wili-

am in the Anglo Saxon war and we ARE of nobili-

ty, My father passed away Sept 11 of an aneurysm

before I found the web site the Great Pioneers of

Missouri he would of liked to see that.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Sharon

TERRILL [email protected] Sharon,

I'm sorry, but I found nothing in my database

which matched your information. I am researching

Terrell (etc.) in the Southern states, but I have not

yet gone beyond the 1870 census (next on my list

is 1880), so I can't search for Thomas by census

records. In any case, I am researching only the

Southern states plus Indiana (where a substantial

number of Virginia Terrells migrated), and have no

data on Illinois or Iowa. Don C. TERRILL (with

the Terrell Society of America)

Mr. Terrill,

You seem very knowledgeable about the history of

the TYRRELLs and Terrills; I hope you can help

me. I am looking for information on my grandfa-

ther, Julius Harrison TYRRELL, born in Illinois,

3/4/1889. He died in California on 2/13/1964. His

ss# is 547-26-1608. The SS Death Index shows his

mother's maiden name as HOFFMIES, which I

think to be a typo. Do you have any information

on him, his family, or can you offer me some sug-

gestions on where to search? Any help you can

provide will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, Erin Tyrrell Forbis

[email protected] Erin,

I'm sorry, I don't have the information you seek.

The spelling of the name very strongly suggests

that your earliest North American ancestor was ei-

ther: (a) a New England TYRRELL or (b) a 19th

century TYRRELL arrival from England or Ire-

land. The TYRRELL spelling is not used among

Southern Terrells (my area of concentration), other

than immigrants from the northern states. I am

providing a copy of this e-mail to Dan Brinson

who maintains our Terrell Society newsletter in-

dex, in case he finds any references. Don C. Ter-

rill (with the Terrell Society of America)

Editor's Note: I checked the indexes to vols I - IV

of Terrell Trails. The closest name I found to

HOFFMIES was:

HOFF, Elizabeth; Miss; 520; 621 (daughter of

couple below, VA 1786--Gordon Co. GA 1857)

HOFF, Peter; Mr.; 1228; 1229 (1750 Germany--

1828 GA)

HOFF, Winneford 'Winney' PORTER; Mrs.;

1228 (his wife, m. ca1772 Hampshire Co. VA, d

As you can see, these dates are no where near

yours. Maybe one of our members has the info that

you seek. DFB

Hi Don

I am looking for info on a Thomas TERRELL/

TERRILL who married a Nancy BLACKERBY.

These are the facts that I have found:

1. Nancy BLACKABY/BLACKERBY was born

in Orange Co. VA dau. of Thaddeus B. and Jane

MARSHALL. This line I can follow back many

generations

2. Both Thomas and Nancy were married in Lin-

coln Co KY

3. Three children known, Thaddeus, John, and

William.

4. Thomas and Nancy were buried in Lincoln Co

KY.

Do you have anything on Thomas who married

Nancy? Any help you can provide, I would be

thankful. Chuck Terrell [email protected]

Chuck,

You provided no dates whatsoever, which made it

difficult to do a proper search of my records. Un-

fortunately, I found no matches. Don Terrill

Hello, My name is Damin TERRILL and I came

upon the Terrell Society web site. I'm a direct de-

scendant of Roger TERRELL. I do believe a de-

scendant of Sir Walter de TIREL. I am interested

in the Terrell Society, and considering joining.

I currently live in Wyoming - but used to live in

Alexandria, Louisiana. I work full-time in an in-

surance agency, have 3 daughters and a husband.

My great Grandmother was Susan Emma TER-

RAL Edmondson, daughter of Artemis Nelson

TERRAL, buried in Jackson Parish. This is one of

the branches from Edward Young TERRAL,

Rev. War Soldier. Would like to connect with an-

yone from the Union, Jackson, Winn, LaSalle or

Grant Parish TERRAL's. Am in the process of do-

ing web pages for tombstone photos and connec-

tions for the Union Parish TERRALS (not my di-

rect line) - and will be adding from the other par-

ishes as I get them. Still have a few kinks to work

out before posting the web address! Beverly Bru-

nelle Casper, WY [email protected]

My only TERRELL connection is through my

Grandfather (Mother's side) William Luther

TERRELL, wife Minnie Viola , died in Sylvester

Texas, date unknown. William Garrett
