Hello spring! I’m sure you are all looking forward to the warmer weather, as I am.

my younger dog absolutely thrives in the colder weather, neither of my dogs really enjoy the summertime, so spring and autumn are a nice happy medium for us.

With spring comes allergy season, so make sure you are looking after yourselves. Did you know that dogs can be prone to allergies as well?! make sure you keep an eye on them and visit your vet if you feel that they are being affected by the increased pollen in the air.

It’s been a busy time behind the scenes at bDoC. We held our Annual General meeting a few weeks ago, and welcomed in a new Committee for the 2019-20 year. the new Committee consists of mostly the same faces as last year, so we expect everything will continue to run smoothly. thank you to Anya and Kate, our outgoing Committee members, for your work over the past year.

In this edition of the BDOC Newsletter, you’ll find the president’s report from the AGm, as well as information on the nominations for life membership and the Cappy Award that were received and ratified at the AGM. If you would like copies of any of the reports or documents that were circulated at the AGm, please email us at [email protected].

our dog sport triallers have been busy competing in trials over the past few months. last weekend bDoC hosted our second double obedience trial for the year, and we have an agility trial coming up very soon too. Dances with Dogs and rally obedience both also have trials on the calendar over the next few months.

Club membership renewal season is now well and truly over, and if you forgot to renew, you need to get in touch with us AsAp ([email protected]). members who failed to renew before the end of the renewal period will need to pay the joining fee again (this is a great incentive to renew your membership in time!).

I hope you have a great session 4 and that you and your dogs learn lots of new and exciting things, and perfect what you already know!

- Maelyn

the belconnen Dog obedience Club (bDoC) was formed in 1975 to provide dog training instruction and facilities for people living in northern Canberra.

the Club’s main activity is our canine companion

classes, which teach basic obedience and valuable life skills to pet dogs and their families. our canine companion classes are open to fully vaccinated dogs of all breeds.

We also offer training in dog sports including agility, dances with dogs, flyball, trialling obedience, and rally obedience, and have many teams ranging from beginners to the top trial and competition levels.

the aims of our Club include:• Having fun with our dogs• promoting responsible dog ownership• Helping our members to become proficient dog

trainers in general obedience, and also in the dog sports of their choice

• Helping our members to develop enjoyable relationships with their dogs

• promoting the pursuit of recognised dog sports

BDOC is supported with much appreciated financial assistance from ACt sport and recreation services and the Department of education and training ACt.

Our Club is staffed and run by a terrific group of volunteers, from the Club’s Committee, office and shop workers, to our incredibly dedicated team of instructors.

If you have enjoyed your time at bDoC, please consider volunteering! We are always on the look out for helpers for our various trials and events, and we run training for new canine companion instructors twice a year in January and June. If you’re interested, please email the Club at [email protected].

CLUB AGM: PRESIDENT’S REPORTWritten by Christine Bates

I am pleased to report on the activities of the belconnen Dog obedience Club for 2018-2019.

COMMITTEEI would like to thank all the committee members of the past year for their dedication and hard work in keeping bDoC running so successfully. Without your contribution the club would not run so well.

CLUB MANAGEMENT the committee members, with the help of many volunteers, have taken on all the roles required to keep the club running smoothly over the past year. These roles include administrative and financial tasks, all the office and shop duties, fundraising and grant writing, maintenance and cleaning of the grounds and clubhouse and liaison for the dog sports. the help of non-committee members in all aspects of club management helps to ease the workload. thank you to all those who have helped out.

TRAINING We continue to fill all places available in the beginner’s classes each session and all other levels of companion classes have good attendance with the usual drop off over the winter months. The loose lead walking workshops and the recall workshop continue to be very popular and valuable to members.

the dog sports continue to be very popular: Flyball, Agility, rally-o, DWD, Disc Dog (updog), and obedience.

INSTRUCTORS A huge thank you to all our instructors who give their time for both the companion classes and all the dog sports. the club would not be able to function without their dedication. We have had a number of new instructors come on board for the companion classes. For the companion classes we ran the January course and then another one in July. These were well attended and the new instructors are out on the paddock either assisting or taking their own classes and doing really well. I do thank them for taking on this role and I hope they find it very rewarding.

TRIALS COMPETITIONS AND DEMONSTRATIONS this year bDoC has been well represented in all aspects of dog sport competitions and we have successfully held our own. Congratulations to all members who have competed in obedience, rally-o, DWD, Agility, Disc Dog and Flyball. It is wonderful to see people from all sports helping out at the club whenever we hold an event there.

DWD, disc dog and Flyball are always happy to participate in community events, demonstrating their dog sports and talking to the public about the benefits of good dog training. A Pooch Affair was held again this year, organised by the ACt government. our members participated in dog sports demos and bDoC had their own stand. thank you to all those who participated, it was a very successful event.

The Advance Dog Extravaganza was held in July, showcasing dog conformation (showing), flyball, obedience, agility and disc dog all in the one location at epIC. this event allows the general public to have the opportunity to watch each sport in action and speak to spectators and organisers about joining each particular sport. Next year will be the 5th year of the extravaganza and we are hoping that it is bigger and better yet again. thank you to all bDoC members who helped organise or who participated in this event.

FUNDRAISING this year we have done a lot of fundraising. I would like to thank everyone for all the work they have put into raising much needed funds for the club. these extra funds go towards purchasing equipment for the club and also in to repairs and maintenance of the clubhouse and grounds. I am sure I will leave out some of the fundraisers which were held but here are some of many: chocolates, puddings wine and fudge, entertainment book, raffles, calendar, etc. The extra funds generated by these activities are so very valuable to the club.

INSTRUCTOR’S LIBRARY elan Chesher has spent a lot of time this year in continuing updating the Instructors library. thank you elan.

LIGHTINGthank you to Angela Hagedorn for preparing and submitting the lighting grant for bDoC to increase the lighting in the paddock so the entire paddock can be used and also for the security lighting at the front door to keep our club members safe when entering the club house at night time.

THANK YOU! so many wonderful people to thank who have helped with the club this year. the committee of course who have been amazing. Janice and Marty for managing the shop and organising people to be there when classes are on. thank you to those who help in the shop as well.

Barbara Brown, John Williamson, Charlie Giles and margo Hellyer for the time they spend on ground maintenance and keeping the grounds looking great and safe for the members. All other club members who help out with emptying of the poo bins, cleaning of the club house and organise working bees to keep the grounds looking clean, tidy and safe.

thank you to everyone who organises trials and competitions for their particular sports which promotes the sport to the community as a whole and raises money for the club.

thank you to lyndal Hasselman for building morale with the Canine Companion instructors, organising and filling the roster to ensure classes run on a thursday night and sunday morning, organising the instructor’s courses with help from Cheryl, maelyn and Charlie.

And to maelyn Draper, thank you is really not enough for all the help you have given me and everyone else and all you do to keep the club running so smoothly behind the scenes that a lot of people would not be aware of.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Sarah Wheal

the winner of the Cappy Award for 2019 for

her contribution to the club over the year.

CLUB AGM: LIFE MEMBERSHIPELAN CHESHERNominated by Janice Abbey and Martin Gardner

Elan first became a member of BDOC in the late 1970’s, shortly after its conception. Elan did her first instructors course in the 1980’s. she taught classes for a short period of time, however the club’s approach to dog training at that time did not match her gentle nature.

elan loved dogs and training them, re-joining bDoC in 2005, with Hoot in puppy class. elan was not able to continue training Hoot for very long, as her life outside of the dog club took precedence. However this did not deter her from continually learning about dog training methods. she spent many hours training Hoot at home and reading up on clicker training and implementing what she had learnt.

As soon practicable, elan returned to bDoC to train Hoot. shortly thereafter, she undertook the bDoC instructors training course in 2010 with former bDoC president and life member, Jenny Thistleton, life member Gabe Meyer, and current trainers Cheryl Neal and Nicola Hardaker.

Following her instructor training, elan assisted Gabe with several bronze level classes. elan was committed and took her role as a bDoC dog trainer seriously. It is reported that she always arrived early and helped set up for the classes.

elan found her niche teaching the puppy Classes and has successfully taught many classes.

elan’s commitment to bDoC saw her joining the 2015-2016 bDoC committee, where she was an active and supportive member of the committee and club. elan is the benefactor of the annual club award called the “Hoot Award for most Improved Dog”, which recognises a team that has shown persistence with their training.

Elan also made a significant contribution to reinvigorating the bDoC library, a resource made available to the instructors for furthering their education in dog training techniques.

the contribution elan has made to bDoC over the many years is honourable. It is people like elan who do a lot of work behind the scenes with such generosity, cheer and without fuss, who keep volunteer organisations like bDoC running.

ANGELA HAGEDORNNominated by Niccola Hardaker

A valuable and extremely long serving club member, Angela Hagedorn has been an active instructor at the belconnen Dog obedience Club since 2003.

Ange has been a key member of the Canine Companion instructing team over the entire time, and has contributed to the development of our curriculum as well as instructor training.

As a positive trainer, and a person who always seeks to better her knowledge and understanding of dog training, Ange is especially valuable to instructors and club members seeking to improve their shaping and clicker skills and is always happy to share her expertise with others. she frequently provides support outside of regular classes for those experiencing training challenges.

Her joy in training is an example to others as she has competed in a number of dog sports with her own dogs and often represents the club at public demonstrations. she was also instrumental in the establishment of Dances with Dogs (DWD) classes at bDoC and a foundational judge for DWD in the ACt.

Ange continues to teach canine companion classes, DWD and tricks and always inspires others to have fun with their dogs.

OBEDIENCE TRIAL REPORTWritten by Maelyn Draper

on saturday 24th August, bDoC hosted our second double obedience trial for the year.

We received an excellent number of entries for our winter trial, especially for the lower classes. It’s really great to see that there’s lots of new interest in obedience trialling, a sport which is often overlooked in favour of the newer, louder, and faster dog sports.

We were lucky with the weather, with clear blue skies and not super freezing temperatures, despite the constant light winds. the atmosphere was calm and relaxed, and as always, competitors bonded over their successes, near misses, and training challenges.

this trial saw the launch of our new obedience trial medals, which recognise the highest scoring club member in trial, as well as in the entry level class. the first winners of our obedience medals are:• Highest Scoring Club Member in CCD (AM) – Dorothy

Xu and Chad• Highest Scoring Club Member in Trial (AM) – Maelyn

Draper and tango• Highest Scoring Club Member in CCD (PM) – Geoff

Woodman and bronte

We have also brought this initative to our rally obedience trials, and will begin awarding the rally obedience medals at our double trial in November.

I’d like to say a big thank you to the wonderful people who came out to steward - Liz Giles, Julie Cardew, Jenny O’Connor, Janelle Naughton, Natalie Tasker, Janay Robinson, Jo Washington-King. Thank you also to the competitors who also helped out in the rings - Carmen Kong, Dorothy Xu, Karen Hore, and patricia looker.

Thank you to our judges - Sid Schuck, John Green, Cheryl Neal and Jo Hagan - for your enthusiasm, encouraging words, time and effort.

thanks also goes to Charlie Giles, who set up the ring ropes and brought the equipment out.

lastly, thank you to elaine temby, our long serving obedience trial manager. elaine has informed me that she wished to step down from the trial manager position after this trial, and I’d like to thank her on behalf of bDoC obedience for all that she’s done over the years to keep our trials running so smoothly.

TRICK DOGS IS COMING TO BDOC!the new rules for trick Dog competitions have been approved, and we can start holding official competitions and earning Trick Dog titles from January 2020!

to earn titles, you will need to perform a series of tricks, as they are described in the rules, with a passing score for each trick.

At starters level, you will need to perform six tricks, which you can choose out of the list of fifteen described tricks. You will need to perform the tricks as they are described in the rules, paying attention to times and distances and start and finish points. You will also need to provide your own props, such as jumps, pivot perches, retrieve toys or target mats, and make sure they are an appropriate size and safe for your dog.

the best bit? At starters and Novice levels, you can reward your dog in the ring! there will be a reward station inside the entrance of the ring, and you must place your treats (in a sealed container) or toy on a station, and you may reward after each trick.

make sure your dog is used to running to get a reward after they have performed a trick, and not expecting you to have a reward on you, but this is a great chance to practice making this really exciting.

the tricks at starters are quite simple, and behaviours which many of you have already taught. If your dog can already do these behaviours; paw on Hand (for 2 seconds), Nose to Hand touch, spin once, step up (on a pivot perch), leg weave and sendaway to a mat: then you have the 6 tricks you need to qualify at trick Dog starters!

This will be an official titling sport, so to compete and earn titles, you will need to be an ANKC member and have your dog registered with Dogs ACt, or your state equivalent

If you're interested in learning more about trick Dogs, please talk to instructors Niccola or Heather or email [email protected].
