September 2011
FROM THE ACTING CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
It gives me pleasure to pen this short article on the eve of my 65th Birth Day. I feel privi‐leged and blessed to be holding a career and trusted to lead an organisation of such great repute as KING EDWARD VIII HOSPITAL. It is even more fulfilling to know that this institution alongside the Medical School formed the ground that nurtured my growth from a diligent student and turned me into a dedicated Medical Professional.
Five years I have spent working as a Medical Manager and the last 18 months of that time I also had the privilege of Acting as CEO. Allow me to reflect on a few highlights that stand out in my life at KE8H.
I have provided leadership for the Medical & Allied professions and am proud to have had a team of dedicated employees that were assisting me to achieve the objectives of the institution. This task was made easy by colleagues at Senior Management who allowed me to blend with them even though I came from a very complex background and made me part of themselves.
We went through lean periods where departments such as Pharmacy, Radiology, Radiography, Ortho‐paedics, ENT and Occupational Therapy, to name but a few experienced great staff shortages. Those times, before the days of OSD it was very difficult to fill these posts even when they were advertised more than once.
The hospital also went through three strikes dur‐ing this period and one is proud to indicate that the institution had dedicated employ‐ees who worked tirelessly with the
assistance of the military medical and nursing team to ensure that the hospital remains opened despite the strikes. Indeed services such as Obstetrics and the paediatrics units struggled on to provide services in these two critical areas. One is grateful to have worked with such people.
One has also seen challenges posed by deteriorating infrastructure due to the age of the hospital and the poor state of repair when we had to form a special task team to make recommendations after the col‐lapse of the ceilings in N and I blocks within 8 months of each other. We are grateful that the department was equal to the challenge and took the matter up seriously and provided the necessary intervention. As we speak both Blocks are more that 60% towards completion and we are privileged to say that total refurbishment is taking place as well as the provision of the much needed furniture and equipment. Indeed one has seen staff moral go up and everyone re‐dedicate themselves to serve this hospital to the best of their ability.

Our challenge in this regard is for us to ensure that we maintain the hospital in as good a state as we can for as long as is possible. This one knows will happen because it will be under‐pinned by the current hospital Imple‐mentation Plan which is in line with National Health Department Ten Point Plan, MDGs, KZN Provincial and eThekwini District Service Transformation Plans.
W e are also privileged to have been selected for assistance by Carte Blanche as a result of which we have the BHP Billiton sponsored project whereby a Paediatric Centre of excellence is under construction due for completion and commissioning in before the end of the current financial year. Halala King Edward Department of Paediatrics! Halala!
The hospital has in the last 18 months seen the change of the guard in the Senior Manage‐ment that has posed a big challenge moving forward. The CEO post has been vacant since April 2010 and re‐mains vacant. The Systems Manager post was vacated in December 2010 but now there is a new incumbent. In March the H R Manager post was vacated in March 2011 and is due to be filled on the 1st November 2011. The Nursing Manager post was vacated in June 2011 and the post was filled in August 2011.
The Medical Manager’s post is due to be vacated on the 30th November and will need to be urgently filled. The only post with a manager of more than 8 months in senior management is that of the Finance Manager.
The challenge for Senior Management today is to navigate this institution and enable the hospital to gear itself to meet the challenges of evolving into a Central hospital that the hospital has now been designated to be‐come. One has no doubt that with the support that continues to come from the District as well as the Prov‐ince this goal will be achieved.
With the imminent festive season I take this opportunity to wish all the employees of this hospital a pleasant
Christmas Holiday and refreshing rest over the holidays.
I am grateful to my family especially my wife for having allowed me to dedicate my time and energy to my job sometimes taking their quality time. This way it was possible to serve with dignity.
I am grateful to the entire King Edward Staff / employees and organised labour movements who allowed me
the 18 months to lead them and were extremely supportive. Onward we press toward the realisation of god
health service for the patients that King EDWRAD Hospital serves.
Thank You. Nime njalo.
