29 September 2009 No. 16 F R O M T H E P R I N C I P A L : Dear Parents and Friends of Holy Cross College

Earlier this year, composer Amanda McKenna was commissioned to write a College Anthem. While ‘loan songs’ (in word or music) have been a part of Holy Cross’s history, the College has not had an Anthem of its own, befitting its long and proud history. As the composer of the Delany Song commissioned for the Bicentenary of the Patrician Brothers—a song sung by all Patrician students with great gusto and pas-sion—Ms McKenna was a highly appropriate choice of songwriters. At various points in Term 2, Ms McKenna visited the College to seek the views of staff, students and the Brothers on what being a part of the Holy Cross College community meant to them. The stirring Anthem that she has composed as a result of these consultations bespeaks our values well.

The College Anthem

From the day the first Patricians staked their claim upon the hill

the light of Christ would shine across the land where today those rich traditions

are proudly practised still Under the Holy Cross we stand

and shoulder to shoulder meet the challenge of each day

with justice and compassion “In cruce, salus!” we proclaim “In the Holy Cross, salvation!”

We will make the sacrifices be the best that we can be

and do our best to lend a helping hand And with all our friends beside us

take our place in history in the maroon and gold we stand Through team-work and courage

together hold the line with strong determination

“In cruce, salus!” we proclaim “In the Holy Cross, salvation!”

Shoulder to shoulder meet the

challenge of each day with pride and dedication

“In cruce, salus!” we proclaim “In the Holy Cross, salvation!”

All students of the College have been practising the Anthem in preparation for the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony this Friday, where the Anthem will have its public debut. It is a rousing chant and the students have done a fantastic job learn-ing it and singing it with great pride and enthusiasm. It will stand as a gift to honour the Class of 2009 at their graduation and will be a calling cry of generations of Holy Cross boys to come.

From the Principal continued. After nine successful years at the College, Mrs Anna Giuliani will conclude her Holy Cross College appointment at the end of this term. Mrs Giuliani has been an outstanding and enthusiastic supporter of the College, involving herself in many committees and activities in support of the education of the sons of Holy Cross. She has been a teacher of qual-ity and a good leader of the Maths Department. We wish her well in her new position. Mr Paul Hajjar has been appointed as the new Coordinator of Mathematics to replace Mrs Giuliani. Mr Hajjar is cur-rently Curriculum Coordinator and member of the College Executive at Christian Brothers’ College, Burwood. Prior to his Burwood appointment, Mr Hajjar was the founding Mathematics Coordinator at another Patrician Brothers school, Delany College, Granville. The closing of Burwood has provided a rare opportunity to bring someone of Mr Hajjar’s experience ‘into the market’ and we are very fortunate to have won his services. Mr Hajjar brings to Holy Cross a rich store of pastoral and curriculum experience and will be an asset to the College community. In the four weeks of Term 4 prior to Mr Hajjar taking up his appointment, Mr George Kisrwani (Current Year 12 Coor-dinator) will take on the Acting Mathematics Coordinator position.

******** In this final Crossroads of the term, I take the opportunity to wish our Year 12 students our prayers and very best wishes in the lead-up to their graduation this Friday and their HSC exams immediately following the term vacation. As I have said to them many times, continued effort right to the finish line will make a difference, if even by a mark or two. A mark or two, across the board, makes a big difference indeed. The challenge which was put to young people by the Australian Bishops last Sunday in the Social Justice Sunday Statement is a fitting challenge for our graduands as they prepare to make their way in the world beyond the life of school. It was a repetition of the key challenge made by Pope Benedict XVI at the World Youth Day in Sydney:

What will you leave to the next generation? Are you building your lives on firm foundations, building something that will endure? Are you living your lives in a way that opens up space for the Spirit in the midst of a world that wants to forget God, or even rejects him in the name of a falsely-conceived freedom? How are you using the gifts you have been given, the ‘power’ which the Holy Spirit is even now prepared to release within you? What legacy will you leave to young people yet to come? What difference will you make?

Adam Taylor Principal

From the Assistant Principal On Monday night the Creative Arts Department along with the support of the P&F hosted a wonderful showcase of musical talent at the Holy Cross “Big Night Out”. The night was designed to exhibit the magnificent talents of our students across Years 7 – 12. There were twenty performances in total with an amazing cross section of ability and variety. The likes of Guns n Roses, ACDC, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica were performed alongside Beethoven, Yoko Shimomura and the Jackson five! Many boys were involved in not only performing in these genres but also on different instruments. Credit must be given to Ms Tripodi and Ms Gamma for turning out such professional and tal-ented performances. Thank you to everyone involved in making the night the success as it was and many thanks to the parents, Patrician Brothers, ex students and teachers who attended the evening. On Tuesday October 27th there will be an evening at Holy Cross, designed to keep parents in touch with a few issues in society and in your sons’ lives. Police officer Brad Taylor will present to you information surrounding the Cyber world in which we live. He will be talking about how the youth of today like to use the internet, what they tend to do and some of the concerns and dangers associated with this. The night is for parents only and will not only be in-formative but a talk parents should not miss. The P&F will supply supper following the presentation and Brad will be available for questions during this time. A note will be sent home with further details this week. Have a restful break and please remember that students return on Monday October 19th in summer uniform. The clothing pool will be open on Wednesday September 30th from 8.30 – 9.30am here at school. The ADFA Education Award is presented annually to Year 12 students in recognition of outstanding achievement exhibited during the recruiting process for entry to ADFA. The award comprises a laptop computer and certificate for you along with a plaque in recognition of your school. It is presented on behalf of the Navy, Army or Air Force to the 120 most suitable applicants who have applied for entry to ADFA.

FEE REMINDER All fee payers are reminded that Term 3 Fee Statements should now be finalised. People who are unable to finalise their account by Week 1 Term 4 are asked to contact Mr Michael McCormack to discuss a payment plan. For whole College events such as the School Athletic and Swimming Carnivals and Feast of the Holy Cross the Col-lege determines the cost to each family by the number of students who are expected to attend. On the day of such events some students do not attend. In consideration of the afore mentioned absent students will be required to produce a doctors certificate. A number of students have still not paid their $20 fee for the Feast of the Holy Cross. Considering that the College has had to pay the costs associated with this day it is expected that all students will pay their fee to the accounts office by the end of this term. If you have any questions regarding fee statements or costs please contact the Bursar’s office. Also please see the CEO Government funding for NSW Catholic schools pamphlet enclosed. MCS AFL - Under 14’s It was great to coach such an enthusiastic group of players in this year’s MCS AFL season. Our results were strong and we went close to a semi-finals berth. Round 1 saw us having to forfeit our match to Parramatta Marist due to the HCC Athletics Carnival being held at the same time. Round 2 saw us defeating Trinity College Auburn by 61-33. Round 3 had us defeating St Pats Dundas by 33-25. Round 4 saw us playing the competition leaders Marist Eastwood. It was a difficult game with the field size being reduced due to the weather (heavy rain). We unfortunately lost 57-39. Our final game had us against St Greg’s Campbelltown. On a very hot day with no reserves, the players played their best game of the season and were leading with minutes to go. Two behinds in the final minutes saw St Greg’s snatch victory by one point, 28-27. I would like to congratulate all of the players for their spirit and willingness to work as a team in such a short space of time. Thank you also to those dedicated students who came to Wednesday morning training each week. I look for-ward to building on this year’s successes next year. Here is our squad : Nicholas BELL – Captain - Centre Matt WOODS – Vice Captain – Centre Half Forward Dylan TIRTABUDI – Left Forward Pocket Nathan SKRIVANIC – Full Forward Liam GIBLIN – Right Forward Pocket Ben PLUG – Left Half Forward Jake DUIGNAN – Right Half Forward Jayden WHEELHOUSE – Left Centre Wing Josh CAMROUX – Left Half Back Alex SGHABE – Right Centre Wing Sam EVANS – Right Half Back Pierre LATTOUF – Left Back Pocket Hayden TAYLOR – Fullback Kale BARTON-BISSAKER – Right Back Pocket Patrick ANUSRIDEACHA – Reserve Jack HEARN – Reserve Josh SKELLY – Reserve Declan BOLLER – Reserve Well done boys.
