Wednesday December 7, 2016 From Sue End of year reports The end of year reports will be available for parents to access on the Compass portal late afternoon on Monday 19 December. All parents will receive a Compass notification when they are available . The teachers have been very busy carefully appraising children’s work, administering a variety of test instruments, analysing the results and then moderating with colleagues to ensure consistency of assessment and progression points across each level. We typically find that many grades at Hampton will have close to half the grade achieving above the expected level and of these 40% would be 12 months or more in advance of the expected grade level. Year 3 and 4 Camp Recently all Year 3 and 4 children attended the Oasis Camp at Monbulk. This is a lovely campsite, one that offers a range of stimulating and challenging activities for the children, many of which take them out of their comfort zone. In this way we are consciously encouraging the children to work cooperatively in teams, have faith in their own abilities and take a calculated risk; all of which build resilience and independence. One of the activities involved a crate climb; whilst the children were safely harnessed they were required to show balance, concentration and courage to add a crate one at time to the existing crate and climb as high as possible without falling. The aim of course was to climb to the roof! Predictably, some handled this challenge better than others but every child had a go. Daily living skills can also be challenge for some children, finding a dry pair of pants or a pair of shoes in a hurry proved to be tricky for a few who had pulled all items from their bag and left many of the clothing items on the floor in a jumble! Being on camp is an opportunity for children to learn how to manage their belongings and grow a little with independence. Over the course of the 3 days most relished the rural environment, had fun exploring, observing and mainly doing many things that simply aren’t available at home. Having dinner with 118 very excited and ravenous Year 3s will remain in my memory for some time! I extend my sincere thanks to the teachers, education support staff and parents who provided high level care and support for our children at camp. I recognise that the camp staff missed out on being at home with their families and being able to sleep in their own beds. I am particularly grateful to the parents, many of whom took time off from work to attend and support the camp. Special thanks go to Deb Brayshaw who did all the preparation and organisation for both and camps and coordinated the Year 4 camp and to Rob Giabardo who coordinated the Year 3 camp.

Feedback from the children confirmed that the children thoroughly enjoyed their time at camp. Grade Structure and Teachers for 2017 The grade structure and allocation of children to grades was announced yesterday. Teachers are mindful of the following factors when allocating children to grades: The number of boys and girls - ideally to have it balanced Having a spread of academic ability in each grade across the year level Having a spread of personalities in each grade across the year level Children who can work harmoniously and effectively together The preferences nominated by individuals regarding those with whom they work well Class and specialist teacher feedback on children’s behaviour and approach from the

current year Suggestion from parents regarding children whom they should or should not be with in the

same class There are times where a child may be matched with a teacher for specific welfare or

academic reasons. Occasionally, the factors listed above can compete with one another; for example, a child will select a friend to be with in the following year, however the combination together may prove to be unproductive or unhelpful with their learning. At other times, a parent may request that two children who are friends be separated, whereas the other parent request that they remain in the same class together. It is understandable that moving classes and meeting new people and teachers can be unsettling for some. Others relish the change. Managing change and accepting that you may not always get your first preference is part of life and does build resilience and capacity. As you can imagine allocating over 700 children to grades is a time consuming and rather challenging task; I am currently fine-tuning a couple of the placements. There will be 32 grades operating in 2017 with the teachers shown below: Foundation/Prep 5 Grades FA: Chris Gillies, FB: Madi Grace, FC: Lisa Logue and Carolyn Platt*, FD: Dimi Beratis, FE: Katia Mance (*Carolyn will work 0.2 in Lisa’s class to permit Lisa to have leadership time.)

Exciting news Our Assistant Principal John Painter is currently on paternity leave as he and Lara await the birth of their second child. I extend my warmest wishes to John and Lara at this exciting time and hope that Christmas and the holiday period is filled with much joy and happiness. Student Leadership Today Joy Brebner and I interviewed nearly 30 aspirant student leaders for 2017. We will conclude the interviews on Friday morning. The children have been asked to submit a written application, and present for an interview. All applicants were predictably excited and nervous today, yet managed to control their nerves and reflect on their skills. We have a total of 57 applicants this year many of whom are applying for various positions including school captain, youth ambassador, house captain, art, music, band, environment and peacemaker captain. I commend all the applicants for being prepared to have a go acknowledging in so doing, they may not be successful. Hampton Author

Three months ago Oli Bingham from 5/6C, Eucalypts wrote and illustrated a story entitled ‘The Secret Life of Eugene Eyeball’ at home. The impressive illustrations were done using an iPad. The process took approximately four months to complete. The inspiration for the story came from seeing a movie which had a super hero as a main character. The character of Eugene Eyeball became Oli’s super hero. Oli and his dad Andrew thought it was a clever story and that perhaps they should consider publishing it. Today I received a copy of the newly published book which will be housed in our school Library. Congratulations go to Oli for being the first student at Hampton to have his imaginative thoughts in print! I encourage our students to read this very entertaining story. Apart from writing, Oli is keen on Science, robotics and

inventing. His ambition is to create a robot that can be programmed to drive cars. Assembly Thank you to 2B, Peppermint Gums for leading the singing of the National Anthem yesterday. Academic Excellence Congratulations go to the following people who received an academic award yesterday at assembly: Erin Bode from 4A – Tea Trees for showing a determined approach to her work and

making outstanding progress in a number of curriculum areas James Savery from 4A – Tea Trees for making outstanding progress in all curriculum

areas and demonstrating advanced skills in thinking. Within The Keep Recently I had the pleasure of attending an extraordinary photographic exhibition entitled Within The Keep. It featured beautiful art prints and handwritten words which captured the spirit of 200 girls; many of whom are current or past students of Hampton Primary. Within The Keep won the 2016 Bupa Blog Awards – Visual Category for using imagery to build positive self-esteem in young girls. The images were absolutely magnificent in their simplicity; all the girls were photographed in black and white with no make-up and Rachel Devine adeptly captured a quintessential quality about each girl. Congratulations go to Rachel, mother of Gemma, Clover and Kieran Tarshis for her outstanding work and exhibition!

Grade 6 Graduation We have our Grade 6 graduation ceremony at Rosstrevor Hall, Brighton Grammar School, corner of New Street and Allee St, Brighton. Our Year 6 students need to be at Brighton Grammar no later than 6.00pm for a 6.15pm start on Monday 12 December. After the ceremony, the children are invited to attend the graduation disco back in the HPS School Hall from 8.30pm-9.30pm.This will be a special occasion for our Year 6s, many of whom have been at Hampton for the last 7 years. I wish our Year 6s the best of luck in delivering their speeches and hope they enjoy the ceremony and the disco back at school. Musical Excellence Jared Thomas from 3D, Silver Mallee is currently a member of the Australian Boys Choral Institute. He has recently been promoted to the rank of Tyro within the Choir training program. Having successfully completed the Institute's probationary period, he is moving on to the next stage of the intensive program at the recommendation of his specialist teacher. This is a notable achievement, as only selected boys are offered a place at this next level. New Tyros have accrued a useful knowledge of the building blocks of music: beat, rhythm and pitch. Boys at this level have made good progress with the visual recognition of intervals and aural memory, and can reproduce unfamiliar melodies with little guidance from their teachers. They are considered full members of the Institute and will start to build a significant repertoire of music. Congratulations Jared! Art Masters at Assembly The Pacific Islands are located to the north and east of Australia. The people who live on the islands have a diverse and ancient culture. They make ornate, sometimes scary masks from wood, shells and other objects found on the islands. Some even cut their own hair to make beards and styled hairdos to put on the masks. They use the masks in celebrations and sometimes to tell other people to stay away from their island. The grade 3 and 4s have looked carefully at the bold, exaggerated features and patterns of the traditional Islander masks and created their own dramatic designs. Over several weeks, these masks have been carefully planned then painted and adorned with beads, hair and feathers. At assembly we had a fabulous parade of Grade 3 and 4 students to celebrate their amazing artwork. Here are some of the incredible masks.
