PASTOR’S CORNER
Gaudete! Rejoice! Our salvation is near! Truth be told, it’s already been accomplished, but we continue to grow in recognizing, embracing and responding to the presence of Our Lord Jesus in our lives. Through the abundant and merciful grace of God, we continue to become more like the Christ we were baptized to be! And of course, there is the “grand finale” of the Second Coming, or our personal death, whatever comes first. The liturgy shifts focus at this point in Advent and begins to refer to the coming of Christ as the babe in Bethlehem. There are so many aspects to this great mystery of Incarnation upon which we can meditate! Try to spend some time prayerfully imagining your-self as Mary when this request to give humanity to the Messiah, and her acceptance of it, turned her world upside down. Then of course Joseph, how he struggled upon hearing that Mary was with child and he knew with absolute certainty that he was not the biological father. The Gospel clearly shows his an-guish and his struggle—through the whole process his great love for his Betrothed is palpable. Try in your meditation to be a shepherd, an outcast and dis-trusted person for the most part and yet the first to hear the Good News from not just one angel but a whole choir of them! This is “real people” strug-gling with real issues. We risk taming the story too much with our saccharine artwork and cutesy little carols. You might want to research the “O Antiphons” which form a classic part of the Church’s prayer at this point in Advent. They are various titles for the Messiah based on salvation history. The hymn “Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel” uses them as its basic structure. By using them, the liturgy firmly connects the Old Testament and the New Testament in an un-broken record of God’s loving, merciful and salvific action on behalf of humankind from the beginning. Gaudete! Rejoice! Our salvation is near!

MISSION BELL
We are so blessed to have a very special someone visit us for the 5th year (if I remember correctly) in a row!!! She wears a dress of red, has hair of white and her husband comes around on a special night! Can you guess who? I honestly don’t know who enjoys our visitor more, the MBPS staff and I or our little saints! She’s the BEST!!! (If you guessed Mrs. Clause you are correct-a-mundo! I need to correct what I previously wrote about our annual Christmas Pageant. For many years I have talked about it in this bulletin as being from the Gospel of Luke. I recently discovered that the Gospels of Luke and Matthew are actually what the Christmas Pageant script follows!
SAVE THE DATE: Friday, February 2, 2018 - MBPS Annual Open House (Time TBA) (We will accept new family enrollments that night) Check the bulletin for weekly updates!
Miss Cheryl
DID YOU KNOW?
Pay attention to signs of neglect
Neglect is a form of child abuse characterized by a failure to meet a child’s basic needs for nourishment, shelter, clothing, healthcare, education and so forth. Be on the lookout for signs of neglect in the children you see on a daily basis because if these needs are not met, a child may be suffering physically and emotionally. Some signs of neglect include mal-nourishment, poor hygiene, and insufficient medical care. For more information, and a copy of the VIR-TUS® article “The Oft-Forgotten Type of Abuse: Ne-glect,” visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx, or call (213) 637-7508.

RINCÓN DEL PARROCO
¡Albricias (Gaudete)! ¡Alegrense!
