I am so excited to begin a new year with Tzedek v’Shalom! For me, it has been a very busy summer — full of planning, meeting, and brainstorming with community members — and yes, worrying. is truly a community that enjoys being together and wants to learn and grow! There is so much to do, however, and so much more we could do with increased membership and increased volunteerism. If we don’t grow, we risk burnout of our current active members. There are certainly areas that we need to give more time and attention. For example, we need to do more in the way of tikkun olam and reaching out to those in need in the wider community in Newtown and Bucks County. In addition, we could do more internal support of our community when someone is sick, in mourning, or going through major life transition like job loss or divorce. When we are engaged in acts of caring and tikkun olam we do them well, but we need to work on sustaining our commitment and creating a system that is more regular and consistent. If you feel that you are able to contribute any level to time and energy toward growing and shaping our community, please be in touch, and know that we are grateful to you. This is the month of Elul, the Hebrew month that precedes the High Holidays, when we gently but firmly face ourselves and contend with the direction our lives are going in. We stand on the precipice of a new year in which there is so much potential. In this Hebrew month of Elul we add Psalm 27 to the daily service: “One thing I ask from God, only this do I seek: that I

may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life…” From this psalm, Rabbi David Wolpe notes that our deepest prayer at this season is not for stuff but for closeness. Our greatest fear is not being impoverished, but being alone. We need each other, and we need our community. I fervently pray that during introspective time, we are able to find one another again and to grow in community. I very much hope to see you all at the Ice Cream Social on September 9th. Larry and Jennifer Garfield, Noa Kuzma, and many others are working hard to plan an event that not only welcomes new faces, but also greets familiar ones. A flyer on page 3 of this newsletter gives all the details. So please bring yourself, and bring a friend! May this be a Shana Tova v’Metuka – a good and sweet year for us all. Biv’rakha/In Blessing, Rabbi Anna

School News We are moving to the George School library, pictured below! Our new space is new, beautiful, and fully equipped with all the elements of a classroom as well as cutting-edge technology — wifi, computer projection equipment, and smartboards. So now we can show students how to access their homework!

Last spring we voted to move to a once-a-week, Sunday model. This was done because too many parents could not physically get their children to Wednesday school on a regular basis, which ended up being disruptive for the entire class. However, I have been exploring Hebrew and Jewish studies curricula that have an online component, meaning that students meet both in school AND online, working and playing with Hebrew and Jewish concepts beyond the time that they meet in class, and at their own pace. I am no longer serving in the Education Director role, but will be overseeing the school and teaching a teen class. Instead, we are seeking a master teacher (supervised by the Education Committee and me) who can ably run a “one-room school house” type model to teach Hebrew and Jewish studies with assistance from parent and teen aides. This is where you come in.

Congregational help with this campaign is both welcome and crucial. I am currently pursuing leads, with the goal of getting the best fit possible for our school. As always, for our school to thrive and be a vibrant part of our congregation, we need YOUR help. Please let me know if you can volunteer in our school! It could be for a month or for the whole year, and it can be in whatever way you can best be helpful. You can assist in basic Hebrew reading or learning prayer; you can run an art project around a particular holiday; you can do drama with the students; you can teach music! Please let me know asap so I can integrate you into the program. I want to ensure that even as our educational model and location change, our “lay” parent/member teachers and volunteers will remain the heart and unique spirit of our school. The school registration form and an info sheet about the school have both been emailed to members. Please forward them to anyone you know who may be interested in our school! And please register your child and return the form to me asap. Finally, because of the holidays, parent orientation will be September 30th. As that date is the eve of Sukkot, students will be doing a Sukkot activity while their parents are in orientation. The first day of classes will be Sunday, October 14th. Details will follow in email updates. For more information about our school, contact Rabbi Anna at 215-287-5128 or [email protected].

group this year at TvS, and think I can finally say for sure that it is going to happen! I would like to offer a once-a-month opportunity for teens to informally get together with me to study a little Torah and discuss how the text informs current events affecting our country and the world. The time that best works for me is on Sunday mornings at 11 a.m. for an hour and a half, at the George School library. Perhaps we could take turns bringing a little nosh — and I’ll bring the texts and articles for consideration. As this time dovetails with Religious School, I am hoping that some interested teens might be able to come earlier to help out in the school. Also, I am hoping that this once-a-month time frame will provide a regular time for teens to reconnect with one another and plan for other, more purely social ways to meet up. Non-members are welcome to join the class for a reasonable fee. Please let me know if you/your teen would be interested, and if you have any questions! Blessings, Rabbi Anna 215-287-5128 or [email protected].

IF YOU OR YOUR JEWISH RELATIVES HAD PROPERTY THAT WAS CONFISCATED, LOOTED OR FORCIBLY SOLD DURING

THE HOLOCAUST ERA, YOU COULD BE ENTITLED TO PARTICIPATE IN PROJECT HEART

Project HEART, the Holocaust Era Asset Restitution Taskforce, helps individuals with restitution for property that was confiscated, looted, or forcibly sold during the era of the Shoah. The first step in this process is to identify those individuals who lost property during that period and to encourage them to file the Questionnaire. The HEART website contains the information you need to determine if you or someone you know qualifies for participation in Project HEART and whether any confiscated, looted, or forcibly sold property might be eligible for potential restitution. By following the step-by-step instructions, the website will guide you through the steps required to submit the Questionnaire and begin your application process. This website also describes the types and locations of property included and excluded from Project HEART and provides additional information and deadlines.

Project HEART is a nonprofit initiative of the Government of Israel in cooperation with the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI). For more information, visit http://www.heartwebsite.org/.

L’Shana לשנה Tova טובה

May you all have a good and sweet New Year! A colleague of mine, Rabbi Rachel Barenblatt, wrote a great little piece on Six Ways to Usher In the New Year, which I thought you might enjoy.

— Rabbi Anna, September 26, 2011 1. Eat apples with honey or challah with honey — or, really, anything you enjoy, with honey on top! This is one

of my favorite tastes of the new year season… and some traditions hold that this taste should be savored from now until the end of Sukkot, so you have some time to enjoy this one.

2. Jewish tradition holds that today is the birthday of the world. Stick a candle in a cupcake if you’re so inclined; go outdoors if you’re so inclined. Wish the world happy birthday, and take some time to be grateful for the corner of the world in which you live, wherever that may be.3. Eat a favorite food you haven’t tasted since last year (a fruit that’s newly in-season where you are? a favorite family recipe? something seasonal and delicious?…) and say the shehecheyanu, the blessing sanctifying time.4. The Hebrew word shanah, year, can be understood as related to the word shinui, change; this festival offers us an invitation to usher in the change we want to see. Spend a little while thinking about your

life, and identify one place where you want to change — and begin that change today, right now.5. Hear the shofar — either in person, or online at http://www.youtube.com/

watch?v=u6iNXRVN-WE. Rambam — aka Maimonides — heard the calls of the shofar as saying, “Wake up you sleepers from your sleep, you slumberers from your slumber! Search your deeds and return in repentance!” (Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Teshuvah 3:4.) The Baal Shem Tov heard, in the sounds of the shofar, a metaphor for the broken heart which brings us close to God. When you listen to the call of the shofar, what do you hear?

6. Go to a body of open water with some bread in your hand. Cast bits of bread into the water, each one rep-resenting one of the ways in which you’ve missed the mark in the last year. As you cast the bread upon the waters just enjoy your own silent contemplation and the rush of the waters washing the old year away.

Take the Stephen Perloff Voter ID Challenge, and you could help someone (of any party) vote! Stephen recent sent this message urging us to step up to this challenge:

At the congregational meeting [in August] several people expressed the fact that they were ready to take the step beyond defining ourselves and want to put our values into action. We have been relatively quiet on the social action front in the past few years, not discounting the work people have done on MLK Day or Mitzvah Day or in painting at the homeless shelter. I must admit that I have not really participated much myself recently. But I must say I am outraged at Pennsylvania’s Voter ID law and believe that we should take action against it. There are several ways to approach this and several things that can be done.

First, you can sign a petition here: http://signon.org/sign/statewide-just-say-no?source=s.em.cr&r_by=148462&mailing_id=5608. Second, you can help make sure everyone who needs an ID has one. There are several organizations working to do this. You’ll probably get information when you sign the petition but we can identify specific ways. Third, we can take a stand as a congregation. We developed a “Tzedek v’Shalom Process for Congregational Advocacy” (accepted by the board on June 6, 2007) for bringing a call for a public stand before the board and congregation. It involves education and discussion although time is short and we need to move quickly. While the Pennsylvania Supreme Court is still considering the constitutionality of this law, I am not sanguine about the outcome because the whole process has been politicized and has nothing to do with constitutionality or even with logic. If anyone is interested in working on this issue with me and is willing to help get a proposal together for a congregational stand, please reply directly to me. Thanks for your consideration, — Stephen Perloff [email protected]
