October/November 2016 Tishrei/Cheshvan 5777 Volume 20, Issue 7 From Our Spiritual Leader Cantor Henry Shapiro 4 Species After the High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur comes Sukkot, one of 3 festivals in the Jewish calendar. One way of explaining and connecting all of these holidays is to point out that we start with an emotional and intellectual process of recounting, reflecting and repenting - and we end by embracing and experiencing the physical world in the Sukkah. You could say the ‘rosh’ of Rosh Hashanah (literally meaning ‘head’ in English) represents the intellect. The blessing we say in the Sukkah, ’laishaiv baSukkah’, to dwell or sit in the Sukkah, stands for the corporeal things we make and accomplish and appreciate. On Sukkot there is a custom of putting together and waving the lulav and etrog in the synagogue and in the sukkah. It comes from the verse 23:40 in the book of Leviticus: “On the first day you shall take the product of hadar trees, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before Adonai your God seven days.” By custom, these end up being 4 species - an etrog and branches of various plants - palm, myrtle and willow. In Midrash or rabbinic lore, these may represent four different things. Such as 4 different kinds of Jews or four parts of the body - heart, spine, eyes and mouth. Since my theme over this High Holidays was community, I thought to extend that theme Coming Events Friday Night Shabbat Services - 6:00 PM Saturday Morning Shabbat Services - 9:30 AM Nov. 18th-19th Birthday Shabbat December 18th Sisterhood Chanukah Dinner Candle Lighting November 4 5:54 PM 11 4:47 PM 18 4:41 PM 25 4:37 PM December 2 4:35 PM 9 4:34 PM 16 4:36 PM 23 4:39 PM 30 4:44 PM

in this Sukkoth context - friends, family, prayer, all coming together for community. What does one do with the lulav and etrog after the holiday? Well one custom is to take all the lulav branches and put it aside. Before Pesach some synagogues take those and build a fire, heating a big pot of boiling water. That water is used to kasher other pots and dishes for Passover. That’s nice symmetry, using one festival in service to another. For the etrog, since it’s an edible citrus fruit, many people make jam or marmalade out of it. Another idea is making a liquor from it. I bought a bottle of it, found surprisingly enough, at the PA State Store. It’s very good but pretty pricey. I looked online and found a number of recipes for both jam and liquor. Those of you who bought an etrog and want to contribute it, bring it in to PJC and I will use it for one or both of the recipes. Hag Sameach and Shana Tovah Cantor Henry Shapiro. • • Labor Day is Monday, September 2nd. • Rosh Hashanah begins the evening of September 4th, with morning services the next two days. See

the High Holy Day schedule for times and dates of all the Holy Days and Festivals in Tishrei. You can find this elsewhere in the Scribe.

• Friday night services continue being held at 6:00 pm instead of 8:00 pm. This change has been well

Joanie and I want to thank everyone who made donations to PJC in honor of the birth of our granddaughter Sophia. Even though she was born 3 weeks early, she is thriving and enjoying being spoiled by all her grandparents! Mike Jacob

From the President’s Desk………………………….Robert E. Korfin Over these weeks we will join Jews around the world in praying to continue to be inscribed in the Book of Life. I never thought much about the Book of Life and it’s impact and implications. I’ve been president of PJC over 23 years now but it’s only in the past years that I’ve given serious attention to that so called Book of Life. Maybe it’s because I’ve gotten older too. When I look around the sanctuary I see, or I don’t see, people who were here just a year ago. I look out over families that are smaller and who have suffered the sharp sting of loss. I talk about the “Parkway Family.” And we really are a family. We care about each other and we care about our beloved Parkway Jewish Center. Just as Jews look at Israel and say, “The fact that Israel is still in existence is a Miracle.” I say the same thing about our beloved Parkway. The fact that I’m speaking to you in this Scribe is a Miracle too. We at Parkway are no longer who we used to be. Let me explain: In line with national trends, the rate of synagogue membership continues to decline. In Pittsburgh, for the third year in a row, the cumulative number of members reported by congregations throughout the city has fallen by more than 2%. When I first became the president of the congregation we had over 150 families. Myrna reminded me that I’ve been president for over 23 years. Today, we’ve broken the 80 family barrier and we’re down to 74 families. And so many of them we rarely see. A recent study completed by The Federation in Pittsburgh broke down Jewish Affiliation this way: 46% Reform 30% Conservative 11% Orthodox 7% Chabad Oh, and 66% of Jews belong to a synagogue in Squirrel Hill and 7% attend synagogues here in the Eastern Suburbs. 74 families…. And like expenses in your own homes, our expenses have continued to increase. Let me throw some numbers at you:

Our Expenses Waste Management $355 per month Water/Sewage $60 per month Electric $140 per month Gas $500 per month Oh, and did I mention: Ehrlich Pest Control $900 per Year Insurance $5700 per year Building/Workers Comp Then there’s: Most of us pay our fair share. There’s only a handful who are delinquent. Those folks will be getting a letter from me very soon. So 74 families, that’s all we are today. And we need your support more than ever. When we went to “Due you Choose” which incidentally, is spreading across the country. Parkway was among the first in the nation; we said, we all need to do 3 things: 1. Make a financial commitment and fulfill it. 2. If we do fundraising, buy or sell something. 3. Make a Kol Nidre Pledge and again fulfill it. So far it’s been working out pretty well. There was a period a few months ago when Gail was alerting me to the fact that we had a cash flow problem and making payroll could be in jeopardy. We didn’t want to dip into other accounts. When the new fiscal year started and you got your dues booklets, money started to come in and our PJC Sisterhood gave a large shot in the arm with their gift of $4000. But it got a bit hairy for a while. BTW….Thank you to Laurie Barnett Levine and the PJC Sisterhood. So take a moment and look around. Let’s hope and pray that we’ll all be around same time next year. May you, your extended families, your friends be inscribed in that “Book of Life” for another year and for many more years after that. And then we’ll talk again…
