That was the tradition of the ancient Jewish community in Palestine and has been used by some other communities. This has become a fairly common practice in recent years in Conservative/traditional synagogues, in large part because it’s a lot less work. February 2015/ Shevat/Adar 5775 practices we choose from which cuts across all denominations. An example of this is hearing Debbie Friedman’s melodies in an Orthodox Havdallah service. Probably there’s no greater example of this ‘mash-up’ of Jewish traditions than Israel. On one trip to Jerusalem, I remember visiting the Wailing Wall for a service. Next to our tour was a group I couldn't help but notice. They sang beautiful and heartfelt Sephardic and Eastern sounding melodies. When I asked afterwards who they were, they said they were from the Moroccan synagogue of Montreal. So even though I suspect most of us are able to trace our lineage from someplace in Europe, we live in a worldwide Jewish community, even here at our little PJC. Be it a Mizrahi melody in services, or reading the Sephadi Haftarah, singing a Ladino Channukah song, or eating some baba ganoush or hummus for kiddush, it’s a kleine velt. A small world and a very interconnected one too.

Murray Abraham as Mordecai, Jurgen Prochnow as Haman, Ornella Muti as Queen Vashti, and Thomas Kretschmann as King Ahasuerus.

February 2015/ Shevat/Adar 5775 Shirley H. & Allan Schwartz want to thank our Congregational sisters and brothers for their prayers, warm-hearted thoughts and wishes to us via their phone calls, thru Social Media, and also by their very thoughtful contributions to special areas of PJC. In addition, Cantor Henry Shapiro and President Robert E. Korfin warmed our hearts by personal phone calls to us and then passing along the latest information on our recoveries. Having us in your prayers and minds and hearts….were like a group hug. Thank you.

As you may know, we left for Florida the last day in October, and scheduled our return for the end of November. In reality, due to a 4 car auto accident that occurred the Saturday before Thanksgiving, we did not return North until the end of December. We were backseat passengers in a car driven by friends of ours and we Thank God we all survived. Allan had spinal involvement, 5 fractured ribs and an eye injury. And, while I also had some injuries, I have put them 'on hold' for now - as the mending is a slow process.

The good news is that Allan has made a remarkable recovery! This year, we not only fully understood giving thanks on Thanksgiving but we stood in awe of our own Chanukah miracle.

Three afterthoughts: 1) NEVER drive in an automobile in which all passengers do not have their SAFETY BELTS fastened! Thankfully, we all did! 2) If you or others have a collar or scarf … always put that safety belt under that collar or scarf to prevent having the safety belt itself tear the skin from the neck to the ear, and 3) Consider buying and installing a soft covering….You can even apply a soft overlay of material to the safety belt on the shoulder/neck area as they are attached with velcro closings.

From the President’s Desk………………………….Robert E. Korfin So the football season is over and baseball hasn’t even started spring training yet. What is one to do to make use of the final weeks of winter 2015? How about taking a class. The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh is holding a 4 part course on of all things, The Arab-Israeli Conflict. 60 Minutes, MSNBC, FOX News and CNN can’t figure it out, so leave to our own Jewish Federation to give us all of the answers. The course will be held in each of the synagogues and temples in the Eastern Suburbs. The class meets on one Sunday a month from 4pm to 6pm. It all kicks off at our beloved Parkway Jewish Center on February 15th. The following month the class moves on to Temple David on March 29th. In April the class continues at Temple B’nai Israel and the final class will be held at Congregation Emanu-El. For that final class many will be making the pilgrimage out to Greensburg recreating the Exodus from Egypt. There will be no unleavened bread served, but you can always stop on Route 30 for a slice of Pizza. It sounds like an amazing undertaking. Is there a fee? U bet….It’s only $35 for all four classes or you can pay $10 for each course you attend. Just between you and me….it really should be free. If you are planning on attending, call the Jewish Federation at 412-992-5247, or click on the links on the flyer on page 13. You need to be recognized. And speaking about being recognized, we’ve been celebrating our member’s birthdays during their birth month. The problem is….not too many people have been coming to shul on your particular month. Now you all know how I feel about the long week of Passover; but you don’t even wish to acknowledge your birthday. What gives? In fact, you could sponsor the Shabbat Oneg for your month and not even attend. You would then have the good feeling in your heart that members of our Parkway Family are enjoying the cake for which you’re paying. Hey, some would call that a win-win. Let Diane Bloomfield or Leslie Rubin know if you would like to sponsor. Here we are in mid February and most of winter is behind us. Each day without snow brings us a day closer to spring. Soon we will hear those glorious 4 words for which we patiently wait each year, “Pitchers and Catchers Report.” Until we hear the chirping of Red Robins and see the buds on the trees, continue to stay safe. Watch out for ice and for goodness sakes…don’t even think about shoveling. We’ve made out fine so far, let’s not blow it in the few weeks of winter that are left. We’re still thinking about renting a bus for the trip to Greensburg. I wonder if Atlantic City is along the way? If it is…we’ll talk again.

Jan. 16, 2015 Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Announces Folk Arts Apprenticeship Grants Harrisburg – The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA) today announced the 2015 folk and traditional arts apprenticeships for Pennsylvania. The annual apprenticeship grants are offered in both craft and performing traditions. Funding supports work between a master artist and an apprentice, enabling them to share and develop advanced techniques or repertoire. This year, fourteen partnerships are being supported. They include twenty apprentices working with sixteen master artists in seven counties. “Pennsylvania can be deeply proud of its folk and traditional arts and artists,” said PCA Chair Jeanne Gleason. “By supporting learning partnerships between recognized master artists and apprentices the arts council sustains the legacy of traditional knowledge and fosters our state’s rich cultural heritage.” Grants are available to eligible Pennsylvania traditional artists identified through a rigorous review process. A panel of out-of-state jurors that included folklorists, ethnologists, and master traditional artists reviewed the applications and work

The Arab – Israeli Conflict:

From 1948 - 2014

The Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh Crash Course to Understanding the Arab-

Israeli Conflict

This spring the CRC and four Eastern Suburb synagogues are partnering to provide a Crash Course to Understanding the Arab-Israeli Conflict. Through four classes, scheduled one Sunday per month from February to May of 2015, participants will obtain the context and background to fully understand the complexity of the issues concerning the history of Israel and her Arab neighbors. Our goal is that participants will leave with a solid understanding of all perspectives relating to the conflict.

COST: Classes are $10 per person, per class, or $35 to attend all 4.

The Arab-Israeli conflict spans roughly one century of political tensions and open hostilities. The establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 by the international Zionist movement took place in territory regarded by the Jewish people as their historic and biblical homeland. The Pan-Arab and Pan-Islamic movements considered this territory to belong to the Palestinians.

This highly interactive course will be taught by Gregg Roman, Director of the CRC and former adviser in the Israeli Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs. He has spent significant time living in both Israel and visiting the Arab/Islamic world. Both the Palestinian/Muslim narrative, as well as the Israeli/Jewish perspectives will be explored in detail.
