From our Garden to You!

The cold winter months are a distant memory as we are fully immersed in summer dreams of glorious gardens and gorgeous roses. Summer also brings a new Palatine rose catalogue, presenting our new rose line up. With our continuous steps for improvement and bringing exciting rose varieties into gardens; 2016 marks a wonderful year.

This year we are offering seven new Kordes varieties. These include the patio rose Lavender Veranda®, the healthy Floribunda Summer Romance™ Parfuma® and the new climber Quicksilver™ Arborose®. For the first time we will be also carrying fragrant Earth Angel™ Parfuma®, Heart Song™ Eleganza®, Fiji™ Eleganza®, and Crazy Love™.

What about historic roses? Yes we have a few additions as well including: Bella Donna, Belle Sans Flatterie, Boule de Neige, La Ville de Bruxelles, Mme Pierre Oger and Suaveolens. Other interesting additions include the peachy Papi Delbard® climber, the border rose Bordure Nacrée®, and the Floribunda Malicorne®.

You will note some additional changes. We are also growing our old fashioned roses on the hardy rootstock Rosa Canina. We have found that some of the historic roses are not as compatible with Rosa Multiflora as with Rosa Canina. It has been documented that roses grafted on Rosa Canina roses have an even longer lifespan than roses grafted on Rosa Multiflora and can have more vibrant colours.

We are are very excited about the roses and thechanges we are offering to you this year and are confident you will enjoy them. As in the past, we look forward to your feedback.

Miniature and Patio RosesMiniature roses are smaller in height and flower size than Hybrid Teas or Floribundas. All our miniature roses are grafted onto Rosa Multiflora root stock, which increases the stem length; a nice feature for the serious exhibitor. Patio roses feature clusters of lovely blooms and are very floriferous. Due to their compact and bushy growth habit, they are perfect for planters and borders. They are marked as such in the description.

Rose Trees- Express Your EleganceWe continue to carry our very own rose standards. As last year the final double graft is 40” from the ground, making this an elegantly sized rose tree.

Hybrid TeaHybrid Teas are the archetype of roses in the rose growing world and the most popular of all rose classes. These large flowers with long stems are a garden classic with typically single high centered flowers growing on each stem in upright bushes. Modern Shrub RosesModern shrub roses are a collection of roses that vary in size and in habit. Unlike Hybrid Teas which tend to make long canes, modern shrub roses tend to make shorter but more plentiful branches and are often as wide as they are high. TO GET THE BEST RESULTS GROWING ROSES, WE URGE YOU TO FOLLOW THESE IMPORTANT STEPS.

Preparation of the Planting SitePrepare the bed for planting before you expect to receive your plants. Your rose bed should get minimum of six hours of sunshine per day and have good drainage. For poor soil, we recommend digging out the existing soil to a depth of sixteen to eighteen inches (40-45 cm), and replacing it with good top soil. Avoid adding commercial fertilizer until your plants are well established (6-12 months after planting).

Care of Plants upon ArrivalSoak the whole plant in water for a few hours, but not for more than twenty-four hours. Plant as soon as possible even if there is a chance of frost. If it is not possible to plant the roses for longer periods it would be best to bury the plants in soil in a slanted position (45° angle), leaving only the tops visible.

Planting a RoseCut back tops of roses either before or right after planting to 5-6” (15-20 cm). Should any young soft sprouts have emerged during shipping, these must be cut off because they will dehydrate the plant. Leave only a few sturdy canes; remove weaker canes and those that are too close together. Cut canes at a 45° angle about 1/4” above an outward facing bud, so that new growth will develop up and away from the centre of the plant. Trim the tips of the roots very lightly.

For most roses, holes should be two to three feet (60-90cm) apart. A spacing of five to six feet (1.5m-2m) applies to Old Garden and Climb-ing roses. Place your plants into the hole with the bud union one to two inches (2-4cm) below ground level. In colder areas, plant two to three inches (3-5 cm) below ground level. Spread out the roots and fill in soil to two-thirds full and pack well. Fill the hole with water and let it drain.

Then complete filling of the hole. Mound the soil up around the base of new plant to prevent canes from drying out. De-hill the soil to normal level after 2-3 weeks or after new bud have started to sprout.

WateringRoses need good drainage to grow well, but they also need a lot of water during the growing season; especially until roots reach deep enough to provide sufficient moisture. During dry spells plants should be thoroughly soaked one or two times a week. To hold moisture, during the summer, leave a slight depression around each rose plant.
