Above and below:More than just a chain, rear wheel

and a big tank, the YZ450FX, YZ250FX and YZ250X feature

engines built specifically for cross country competition, with wide-ratio

gearboxes and motors tuned for usable power across the rev range.

At a recent event, riders were asking about the differences between a pure motocross bike - like the YZ450F, and one of Yamaha’s latest cross country competition bikes, the YZ450FX. More than just a change in specs and parts, it’s important to know the why... so we sat down with Philip Lash, Product Planning Manager and committed off-road rider. The Yamaha Report: What are the key differences between a motocross bike and a cross country race bike?

Philip Lash: The key difference is the style of riding they are designed for. Cross Country races are a longer with quite diverse terrains—from tight muddy hill climbs to high speed open sections through fields—so the bike has key features that target these diverse conditions. Like a larger fuel tank for the longer race distances, an 18” rear wheel to help prevent flats and provide a little more rider comfort, a wide-ratio transmission for the big speed differentials, an engine guard and O-ring chain for durability, and specific tuning like revised chassis rigidity, suspension internals, and ECU tuning. All designed to work better over more varied terrain and longer rides.

TYR: Why do these differences matter to a cross country racer?

PL: Yeah, again for the varying and diverse conditions an off-road racer will encounter. Motocross is held on a shorter course with fairly consistent dirt compositions and with consistent obstacles like jumps, bumps, ruts, berms. Off-roaders will face these same conditions, but additionally will encounter stream crossings, mud holes, tree roots and rocks... all kinds of rocks: slick rocks, sharp

rocks, small rocks, big rocks. You just never know in an GNCC®-style event.

TYR: How is Yamaha unique in building these cross-country-focused machines?

PL: Yamaha’s first dedicated competition off-road model was the 1976 IT400C. “IT” stood for International Trials, what has evolved into the ISDE (International Six Days Enduro) today. Since then we have had numerous competition off-road models through the years, the first WR®250 in 1991 for example. Anyhow, fast-forward to 2015 and we launched the first “X” model, the YZ250FX. This was a big model for us as the concept of the YZ250FX was “Pure Closed Course Competition, Cross Country Racer.” To achieve our concept, we based the X line on our motocross YZ models. This was key, as riders prior to the X had to modify a bike designed for the moto track to suit the needs of the cross country racer. We simply took that feedback and experience to build the bike specifically for them.

TYR: How have the FX/X models performed in the real world?

PL: Sales performance, track performance and rider feedback of the “X models” has been very much a positive for us. The cherry on top was winning the 2017 XC2 GNCC® championship last year with the Am-Pro GNCC® racing team and the YZ250FX.

TYR: What’s your favorite bike in the dirt range?

PL: For me living is Southern California, I ride more moto than anything. It’s just more convenient and easier since so many tracks are close. Every time I ride a YZ125 I have a huge smile on my face—it’s just SO MUCH fun to ride. Then I’ll ride a YZ250F and this bike just does everything so good; it’s amazing and so fun to ride. So, I can’t really pick between these two bikes, I guess it just depends on what side of the bed I woke up on...

MOTORCYCLESFOR LIFE

IN ACTIONKeith McCarty, Yamaha's Racing Division Manager,

recently received a touching letter from a longtime friend who shared happy news that

his two sons had recently been accepted to great

colleges and were about to embark on the next chapter of

their lives.

In the letter, Keith's friend explained how many years ago his boys started riding a PW50TM dirt bike, which

quickly turned into a love for riding and racing for both his

boys. He talked about how riding has taught them many

things over the years and feels that it helped groom them into becoming the successful young men

they are today.

“It all started when? - fourteen years ago with a PW50 and an activity to keep your kids busy during the weekends, the summer months, and keep them out of trouble. I want to thank you and Yamaha for all of your support throughout the years in helping us raise our boys. I am happy to report that both graduated high school this past Sunday, June 10th, and are ready to embark on the next chapter of their lives. You have two proud Yamaha riders where the next step may be to trade the dirt bike in for the street to get around on a college campus.

“Robert (in the Michigan shirt) was his class valedictorian, a National Merit Scholar, 4.0 GPA with lots of college classes, and has been accepted and will attend the University of Michigan in their College of Engineering. So now when he says “Go Blue,” it will have two special meanings: Yamaha and U of M. He is very excited and a lot of his college essays had to do with riding and racing motorcycles and all the engineering principles involved with a bike. He wants to be a biomedical engineer, but still wants to join the U of M Spark Racing Team which builds and races all electric street bikes.

“Michael (in the Purdue shirt) graduated with a 3.6 GPA, and has matured into a fine young man and a hardworking student. After a disastrous 9th grade year, the light went on and he buckled down and focused. Michael will be attending Purdue University® in Indiana and will focus his studies on pre-dentistry and business. Most of Mike’s story in his Purdue application came from turning himself around in school and his involvement in racing from the age of five—winning a couple 125 championships along the way.”

TRACER NIKEN

From the rugged European Alps to the river valleys of Washington state, Yamaha's latest products have been reviewed by the professionals in the real world. Here's what the pros

have to say about the new Tracer 900 GT and NIKEN LMW sportbike.

TRACER AND NIKEN MEDIA BUZZ

“…the Niken is a triple treat in more ways than one.”

M E D I A B U Z ZM E D I A B U Z Z

Cycle World® Magazine (July 2018)

“A combination of a willing engine, sorted chassis and creature comforts make the Tracer 900 GT an excellent sport touring motorcycle.”

“The Tracer is just as ready to shred a mountain road as it is to chew up 500 miles in a day.”

“Absolutely one of the best [windscreens] I’ve experienced in some time.”

“So the Tracer 900 GT keeps you comfortable, but can it excite and engage? Short answer: absolutely.”

“Controlled by an easy-to-use switch gear on the left, the cruise control fueling while activated is silky smooth.”

Motorcycle.com (July 2018)“…a comfortable, well-suspended motorcycle that corners like crazy...”

“I had an absolute blast riding it…”

“Hats off to Yamaha for doing abnormal things now and then just because they can, flexing their engineering muscles.”

Rider® Magazine (July 2018)“Like its predecessor, the renamed, revised and refined Tracer 900 GT has quickly established itself as a staff favorite. We just can’t get enough of its rowdy triple, and it manages to be practical without being boring and sophisticated without being complicated…”

“On a bike as frisky, agile and comfortable as the Tracer 900 GT, consecutive 500-mile days were a delight…”

“…at cruising speeds it hums along smoothly and quietly”

“Obedient in the best possible way, only minimal effort is required to tip the bike in and carve surgical arcs around corner after corner, and tossing it from side to side is a real pleasure. This bike is an absolute blast in the twisties!”

Cycle World® Magazine (May 2018)“I’m surprised by how the Niken works and how conventional it feels. There’s no adjustment period or adaptation required to ride it; all the skills, instincts, and muscle memory you’ve cultivated over the years carry over perfectly.”

“On top of the fact that the Niken is fun to ride, it’s also got a comfy seat and upright ergos, and the ride quality is sport-tourer plush.”

“That additional front wheel essentially doubles front-end traction, leading to a nice boost in confidence while ripping through corners—especially when road conditions are less than ideal.”

Motorcycle.com (May 2018)“For the experienced rider who’s had everything but wants more, for early adopters of interesting tech, for people who just want to ride safer, I’d give the Niken’s two front wheels more than two thumbs up if I had them.”

“I had an absolute blast riding it… it’s easier to ride than a conventional bike.”

“If carving corners is the basis of what makes sporty motorcycling so enjoyable, then the Niken is all about distilling that feeling.”

Rider® Magazine (May 2018)“…I could push it harder into corners than anything I’ve ridden without a wit of concern…”

“…many riders will find it more fun and less stressful to ride than a single-track motorcycle.”

“The bike is so solid, secure and planted even when you’re fully heeled over it almost feels as if you could take your hands off the bars…”

“…there’s simply a phenomenal amount of grip available for cornering and braking.”

“…the steering is butter smooth, neutral and low effort…”

“…over bumpy roads the Niken is very stable and confidence inspiring, like it simply can’t get out of shape.”

Meet the Best of the Best

Yamaha recently invited the nation’s top six Yamaha motorsports technicians—

based on their Yamaha Technical Academy Gold-level training scores—to Kennesaw,

Georgia, to compete in the 2018 United States Technician Grand Prix.

After two grueling days of competition, Jeremy Talley of I-90 Motorsports finished on top and is the winner of the 2018 United States Technician Grand Prix. Not only does he get to be proud of his win, he went home with a (giant) check for his grand prize of $2,500, too!

Now, Jeremy needs to prepare himself, as he will attend the World Technician Grand Prix to be held in Japan this October. Here’s what these top techs had to say...

1ST Place Jeremy Talley - I-90 Motorsport Issaquah, WAThe Yamaha Report: What was the hardest thing about the competition for you?

Jeremy Talley: Staying focused on the task at hand and not being distracted by the judges, spectators or cameras.

TYR: What was your favorite take-away from the competition?

JT: The new friends I met, both inside Yamaha and from the other dealerships.

TYR: What was your first reaction on finding out your win in the final results?

JT: Well s---, I actually did it!

TYR: How do you think this experience will improve your career?

JT: I think there’s more trust from staff and customers. When I find an issue, I have the confidence in my diagnosis and that it will be repaired correctly.

TYR: What are you going to use your winnings for?

JT: Nothing too exciting. I bought a couple accessories for my new truck and the rest went to investments.

TYR: Nothing wrong with that. How are you

feeling about the big Japan trip coming in October?

JT: I’m okay at the moment. Just working on my Yamaha Diagnostic Tool skills. Once the date gets closer, I’m sure I’ll get excited... and maybe have a small freak out!

2ND Place Rado Paul Mio West Orlando Powersport Oakland, FLTYR: What was your favorite take-away from the competition?

PM: My favorite take-away from the competition was definitely the experience of competing at that level against very competent and skilled technicians. I was very honored to be chosen to participate.

TYR: What was your first reaction on finding out your win in the final results?

PM: My immediate reaction to my placement was one of surprise. I did not think I would do as well as I did. My wife, on the other hand, was not surprised and was very proud of my accomplishment.

TYR: How was the reaction coming back to your home dealership?

PM: My dealership is very proud of me. My service manager tells everyone he can about it!

Finally, Yamaha would like to give a huge “Thank you!” to all of the U.S. Tech GP competitors, including the three runners up, who each earned their place as one of the best Yamaha motorsports technicians in the United States.

While every one of the nearly 1000 Yamaha motorsports dealers in the United States aims to earn your business, Pro Yamaha dealers take customer service and support to the next level. To learn more about Pro Yamaha dealers, check out the video. And read on to hear from the dealers themselves as they explain what makes them stand out from the competition.

Joe Bamdas of Riva Motorsports (RivaMotorsports.com), Pompano Beach, FLThe Yamaha Report: How does your Pro Yamaha status set you apart from other dealers?

Joe Bamdas: Our Pro Yamaha status sets us apart from other dealers when customers look at the Yamaha website. We are in a congested market and every advantage helps to get customers in the door. Customers see the Pro Yamaha badge on the website and it helps to differentiate us from the other dealers. We have always encouraged any additional training for our staff. Pro Yamaha just reinforces that and helps make Riva’s staff the best in the industry.

TYR: How do you let your customers know about Pro Yamaha?

JB: We have banners and window stickers displayed inside the dealership. We also mention our Pro Yamaha status on our “on hold” message.

TYR: How do your customers benefit by taking their business to a Pro Yamaha dealer like yours?

JB: Our customers benefit by getting a knowledgeable staff in all departments. Our technicians are up to date on all current Yamaha updates and training, therefore our customers get their units fixed right the first time. Our sales staff knows all the features and benefits of the Yamaha product line, so our customers are sure to get the perfect bike, ATV, SxS, or PWC for their needs.

Mike DuClos of Rock River Powersports (RockRiverPowersports.motorcycles) Johnson Creek, WIThe Yamaha Report: How does your Pro Yamaha status set you apart from other dealers?

Mike DuClos: Pro Yamaha helps our dealership to be the best at what we do. We all need a little reminding now and then, and Pro Yamaha reminds us of the things we need to not only educate our staff on, but educate our customers on. Being held to a higher standard across the board gives us the edge over our competitors.

TYR: How do you let your customers know about Pro Yamaha?

MD: Our customers will see our Pro Yamaha status when they view our profile online, but we make

a point to tell each and every customer that we are a Pro Yamaha dealer, and very proud of it. We make sure to tell them the differences between

us and our competitors, and why it is an advantage to them to work through us.

TYR: How do your customers benefit by taking their business to a Pro Yamaha dealer like yours?

MD: Customers benefit coming to a Pro Dealer not only because of the expanded knowledge base we have technically, but it also insures that our staff are educated to interact with the customer at the highest level and be sure that all their needs are met. Our staff are definitely more knowledgeable because of Pro Yamaha and they enjoy the benefits that we receive as a Pro Yamaha dealer. The notoriety alone is enough to make you more enthusiastic, but I truly believe that Pro Yamaha sets the bar higher for them, which raises their awareness not only to customers’ needs, but the facilities needs to maintain that level.
