Greetings from SEAMEO Regional Center for QITEP in Science!
This is the 4th edition of our newsletter. Here, we will inform you about our ac-
tivities on 2011: The 2nd GBM, The 2nd International Conference, Workshops,
trainings, on job training of the environmental education for elementary school
level, QITEP in Science participation in various events, and also the collaboration
between SEAMEO QITEP in Science with some other institutions
We hope this newsletter could give brief information about our Center. If there
are any suggestions or inquiries, and also information to share, please do not
hesitate to contact us. We would be very happy to furnish. Thank you. Prof. Dr. Ismunandar

1 GB MEETING
THE SECOND GOVERNING BOARD MEETING OF SEAMEO REGIONAL CENTER
FOR QITEP IN SCIENCE
SEAMEO Regional Centre for Quality Im-
provement of Teachers and Education Per-
sonnel (QITEP) in Science Governing Board
(GB) is the Centre's highest policy-making
body. The GB is composed of representatives
from each SEAMEO member countries who
are nominated by their respective Ministers/
Secretaries of Education and appointed by
the SEAMEO Council. The GB is responsible
for the Centre’s operational policies. The
SEAMEO Secretariat (SEAMES) Director and
the Director of the Centre serve as ex-officio
members of the Board.
The 2nd Governing Board Meeting of SEAMEO
Regional Centre for QITEP in Science was
convened on 8 to 10 September 2011 at the
Inna Sindhu Beach Hotel, Sanur, Bali,
Indonesia. The Board Members who attend-
ed the meeting were Mr. Giri Suryatmana
from Indonesia, Ms. Nadia Lee Siew Hoon
binti Abdullah from Brunei Darussalam, Mr.
Sun Bunna from Cambodia, Mr. Oudone
Thepvongsa from Lao PDR, Datuk Dr. Haili
bin Dolhan from Malaysia, Dr. Carolina S.
Guerrero from Philippines, Dr. Charles Chew
from Singapore, Dr. Pornpun Waitayangkoon
from Thailand and Dr. Le Phuoc Minh from
Vietnam.
Beside Prof. Ismunandar, the Director of
SEAMEO QITEP in Science, the meeting was
also attended by the Deputy Director for
Administration and Communication of
SEAMEO Secretariat, Dr. Tinsiri Siribodhi and
delegates from Ministry of National
Education of the Republic of Indonesia and
universities.
The opening ceremony was held on 8th
September 2011. Dr. Tinsiri Siribodhi, the
Deputy Director for Administration and Com-
munication of SEAMEO Secretariat, officially
opened the 2nd SEAMEO QITEP in Science
Governing Board Meeting.

WORKSHOP ON DEVELOPING QITEP IN SCIENCE PROFILE
SEAMEO Regional Center for QITEP in Science conducted Work-
shop on Developing QITEP in Science Profile in Sumedang, Indone-
sia from 28-30 June 2011. The workshop was attended by 30 par-
ticipants from QITEP in Science and CDTEP in Science. The product
of workshop were printed and video Profile of SEAMEO QITEP in
Science .
SEAMEO Regional Center for QITEP in Science has carried out a
Workshop on Planning of QITEP in Science Program 2012 in Ban-
dung, Indonesia from 26-30 July 2011. The workshop was
attended by 20 participants from QITEP in Science and CDTEP in
Science. The product was QITEP In Science Program 2012 Term
of References (ToR).

WORKSHOPS
In 2011 SEAMEO Regional Center for QITEP in Science
conducted some workshops as follows:
On 12 July 2011, SEAMEO Regional Center for QITEP in Science
conducted workshop "Inquiry Based Science Learning". The Key-
note Speaker was Dr. Caroline Kiehle, an expert from The Centre
for Inquiry Science at the Institute for Systems Biology, USA.
WORKSHOP ON INQUIRY BASED SCIENCE LEARNING
On 25 July 2011, SEAMEO Regional Center for QITEP in Science
conducted workshop on " The Potential of D-Book".
Prof. Masami Isoda, an expert from Tsukuba University, Japan,
was the Keynote Speaker of the mentioned workshop.

WORKSHOP ON INQUIRY SCIENCE TEACHING AND LEARNING
On 11th September 2011, SEAMEO QITEP in Science conducted
4 hour Workshop on “Inquiry Science Teaching and Learning”.
The Workshop was guided by Dr. Caroline Kiehle and Barbara Schulz
from Inquiry Science USA. The workshop was followed by 40 teach-
ers and education personnel from Indonesia and South East Asia
Countries. The other one was held in UPI, Bandung that was attend-
ed by 35 participants consisting of lectures from Education Universi-
ty of Indonesia (UPI), staffs of QITEP in Science, and teachers from
West Java Province.
WORKSHOP ON SCIENCE BY DOING
SEAMEO QITEP in Science had collaboration with
Australia Academy Science to conduct workshop on
Science by Doing. Dr. Amelia Druhan as Director of
Science by Doing, Australia, Academy of Science led
the workshop in Bali on September 14, 2011 and also
in Bandung on September 16, 2011.
In Bali the Workshop was attended by 40 teachers
and education personal from Indonesia and South
East Asia Countries. The other one was held in QITEP
in Science, Bandung that followed by 35 participants
consisting of instructors from CDTEP in Science, staffs
of QITEP in Science, and teachers in West Java Prov-

WORKSHOP ON PLANNING AND
DEVELOPMENT OF INFORMATION MEDIA
SEAMEO QITEP in Science has carried out a
Workshop on Planning And Development of Infor-
mation Media in SEAMEO QITEP in Science, Ban-
dung, Indonesia from 10 – 13 October 2011. The
training was attended by 20 participants from QITEP
in Science and CDTEP in Science. Instructor came
from the Center. The products of workshop were
banners, newsletter, leaflets, and web site template.

One of the events in QITEP in Science's training courses 2011 was the auction of participant's local souvenir. The money collected from the auction will be donated in accordance with the proposal of the participants. On September 2011 The Centre has delivered the donation from the two training courses; Environmental Education for Sustainable Development (EESD) and Science Laboratory Management (SLM). Donations from EESD participants was aimed to the environment around the Cikapundung river, the area where the trainees observed in the training activity. Ms. Eka Danti Agustiani, the representative of QITEP in Science, delivered the donation to the ENTOG community, a non-governmental organizations as the keeper of Cikapundung river, to maintain the cleanliness and greenery around the Cikapundung river, Bandung. The participants of SLM training proposed to donate their auction results to support education for those who cannot afford. QITEP in Science then delivered the donation to Yayasan Citra Pelajar Mandiri, Jl. Cidurian Selatan 120, Bandung. The Foundation provides scholarships for students of elementary and secondary schools and also organizes various education activities for free (tutorials and public libraries).
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ON JOB TRAINING
PROGRAMME 3rd AND 4TH BATCHES
Environmental Education On the Job Training (OJT) was held
in the purpose of improving the competences of Bandung
primary school science educator in comprehending what
environmental education is and also developing and school-
based plan referring to Environmental Education.
On 3 - 5 October 2011, SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP
in Science conducted the third phase of Environmental Edu-
cation On the Job Training (OJT) at 20 selected schools. This
phase was emphasizing on the implementation of the school
development plan that was developed by each participants
on the previous phase.
The fourth phase will be held on the first week of December
2011. In this phase, The Centre will assess the implemented
environmentally-friendly school development plan by each
school.

7 SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
The 2nd Conference on Science Education and Science Teacher Professional Development
provides opportunities for teachers, educators, scholars and researchers around the globe
who are interested in science education to discuss and share ideas, practices and recent
development in science education and Science Teacher Professional Development. The
theme of the conference was “Science Education for Our Future”. The conference focused
on research and development of science curriculum, teaching and assessment practices in
primary and secondary science education and Science Teacher Professional Development.
The Centre invited science educators and school science teachers from different parts of
the world to exchange research work and best practices. There were also workshops and
seminars for sharing of concerns and experiences in the learning, teaching and assess-
ment of science, which are relevant to the needs and development of the science educa-
tion community around the world.
The Conference was convened on 8 to 10 September 2011 at the Inna Sindhu Beach Ho-
tel, Sanur, Bali, Indonesia. The participants come from SEAMEO Member Countries such

SEAMEO Regional Center for QITEP in Science
collaborated with Centre for Development and
Enpowerment of Teacher and Education Personel (CDTEP)
in Science, and Indonesia Science Teacher Association
(AGSI) conducted International Seminar of "Inquiry Based
Science Learning". The seminar was held on July 12th
2011, in Bandung - Indonesia. The Keynote Speaker was
Dr. Caroline Kiehle, an expert from The Centre for Inquiry
Science at the Institute for Systems Biology, USA.
In 2011 SEAMEO Regional Center for QITEP in Science
conducts some International Seminar as follows:

on July 25th 2011, SEAMEO Regional Center for QITEP in
Science collaborated with Centre for Development and
Enpowerment of Teacher and Education Personel (CDTEP)
in Science and Indonesia Science Teacher Association
(AGSI) held another International Seminar. The Centre in-
vited Prof. Masami Isoda, an expert from Tsukuba Universi-
ty, Japan, to be the Keynote Speaker. The Theme of the

INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON INQUIRY BASED SCIENCE LEARNING
PUBLIC LECTURE " BEAUTY AND FUNCTION OF PROTEIN, THE BUILDING BLOCK OF LIFE" WITH ROBERT HUBER (NOBEL PRIZE WINNER CHEMISTRY 1988)
SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Science had collaboration with Bandung
Institute of Technology (ITB), Indonesian Chemistry Association (HKI), and Local
Education Departement of West Java (Disdik Jabar) to organize a Public Lecture on
" Beauty and Function of Protein, The Building Block of Life".
The activity was held on 3rd August 2011 in East Auditorium of ITB. It was
attended by lecturers from some universities in West Java, Senior High School
students from West Java, Instuctors of CDETEP in Science (PPPPTK IPA), QITEP
in Science Staff and some public institutions.
As a compliment Robert Huber wrote a quote on a paper with golden frame " Food,
Energy Healt Environment are the huge challenge to a man kind, but there it a solu-
tion - it is in the brain of the young people of all countries and Indonesia"

NEW DIRECTOR’s PROFILE
During the SEAMEO Regional Center for QITEP in Science’s 1st GB
Meeting, the GB Members has endorsed Ismunandar, Professor of
Inorganic Chemistry at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) as the Director
for the Centre. He is nominated by the Minister of National Education
of the Republic of Indonesia who shall serve tenure of three (3) years.
He was born 40 years ago and earned his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry in
University of Sidney, Australia in 1998, for his Research topic on
“Structures of Metal Oxides” under supervision from Dr. B.J. Kennedy.
His activities are lecturing in Chemistry, researching and becoming
speaker in many seminars and conferences. He got many research
grants and awards from various Universities such as: Instiute
Teknologi Bandung (ITB), University of Sidney Australia, Third World
