As the school year begins to wind down, my
classmates and I feel like I usually do at the endof a race. But, there are so many more emotionsthan the excitement of reaching the finish line.We also feel prepared to race… I mean to learnmore. One hundred percent of our class hasbeen accepted to colleges from Florida toCalifornia, planning a wide diversity in studies.Nearly 17 percent of the class has been awardedRegents scholarships and a large percentage ofus have maintained above a 3.5 GPA throughouthigh school – a tough task! Just like training torun better, being surrounded by friends whopush each other academically has been a hugebenefit. The teachers are always available tohelp when needed and have set highexpectations for us. I believe that this is whathas led our class to where we are today.
St Cecilia also provides opportunities forinvolvement in multiple activities. This is crucialto the formation of a well-rounded person andbeing able to participate in a variety of activitiessuch as band, cross country, FBLA, Teens for Life, and multiple other sports and clubs has givenme and my classmates the chance to gaincharacter not taught in the classroom. Theselessons in character are what assure me that, like in a race, when the going gets tough, we willkeep striving for the finish.
Most importantly, I feel we are prepared topersevere in our faith as we move out of thenurturing environment that Hastings CatholicSchools has offered. Having priests teach us
theology allows us a deeper understanding ofour faith because of their great knowledge.School masses, and extra masses that FatherBrouillette offers on other mornings beforeschool, weekly Holy Hour, daily prayer, andCampus Ministry further contribute to our faithformation. One of the highlights each year ishaving the Eucharistic Procession with BishopConley. Opportunities for mission trips, TECretreats, service days, and the March for Lifehelp us encounter Christ outside of our schoolwalls. All of these things have prepared us andgiven us a solid foundation on which our faithcan grow, so that when we are no longer withinthe walls of St. Cecilia High School, we will havethe strength and courage to keep the faith.
Without the administration, teachers, staff, priests, religious sisters, family, and friends ofthe school, my classmates and I would not beable to confidently go out to set the world onfire with our faith and with our gifts. May Godbless you all with many graces because of thesacrifices you make for our school.
“I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.” 2Timothy 4:7
Yours in Christ,
Justin Vrooman
