FEBRUARY TECHNICAL PROGRAMSTOPIC: High Effi ciency Domestic Water Heating Design

Speaker: Josh Looper, PE R.L. Deppmann Company

The intent of this session is to make sure we use proper designs that maximize equipment effi ciency without compro-mising the ability for the plant to provide the needed hot water. We will take a holis-tic look at the system including how the

heaters are controlled and how that affects effi ciency, what fac-tors go into choosing one type of equipment over another and how the owners’ costs are ultimately effected. This course will also discuss Pro’s and Con’s of various equipment designs (Tank-Type Systems, Heater/Tank Systems, Tankless Systems) and the will Compare Cost of Ownership of each design.

Josh manages the Engineering and Distribution Sales Teams at the R.L. Deppmann Company. He has been with the company since 1997 and in that time has held positions in estimating, engineering, sales, and leadership. Josh graduated from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and has earned his PE stamp.

Josh is a member of the Cleveland Chapter of ASHRAE and an active participant in a wide variety of industry associations. When not at work, Josh enjoys spending time with his wife and four daughters.

IN THE KNOW

Affi liate Liaison ReportDann Holmes, ASPE Region 2

Having just returned from the 2016 AHR Expo in Orlando, FL, one wonders how many industry professionals attended this annual event and what is the state of the HVAC/R industry.

Although the offi cial numbers are not available at the time of this writing, early indications show this to be the largest AHR Expo ever in the southeast.

Preregistration stood at 32,509. The last time the show was in Orlando the fi gure was around 28,000.

Keep in mind, weather along the northeastern corridor caused many fl ight delays and cancellations.

AHR is claiming 60,000 eventually walked the exhibit fl oor. If this is correct, then this rivals expos held in Chicago and suggests the health of HVAC/R industry is quite good.

Exhibitors of all types were there. Legend introduced their new HyperPure PE-RT tubing available in sizes up to 2”. Dow Chemical was in their booth as part of this historic market launch. This new product carries a listing for hot and cold potable water use and as an added bonus, manufactured in the USA.

Uponor displayed their new 3” PEX along with the Milwaukee expansion tool specially designed to work with their joining method. It should be noted, this too is manufactured in the USA.

Victaulic was certainly proud to talk about their new coupling designed to handle steam applications up to 150psi. The groove is set further back than you might be accustomed to, so be sure to contact your local representative for additional information.

Aquatechnik NA now has their certifi cation listings for their PP-RCT fusion piping system. You can be sure you will be hearing much more about this product in the future. In fact, Plumbing Contractor Magazine recently wrote a story about this in their November 2015 issue.

Trust me when I say there were many more innovative products on display but I do not have enough space in our newsletters to give manufacturers and the ASHRAE educational seminars their just deserve. I would like to improve on this in the future.

It was a pleasure seeing Billy Smith, Executive Director/CEO of ASPE along with Brian Henry, Director of Affi liate Relations at ASPE working the show fl oor. You can image Brian was pulling out all the stops seeking corporate sponsors for the 2016 ASPE Convention and Expo in Phoenix, AZ in late October.

Certifi cation bodies were well represented too including the CSA Group, Intertek, ICC-ES, TUV SUD America, IAPMO, Radiant Professionals Alliance, UL LLC, and NSF International.

Start planning today to attend both the 2016 ASPE Convention and the Expo in Phoenix from October 28 to November 2 as well as the 2017 AHR Expo in Las Vegas from January 30 to February 1.

Show your industry support and let us work together to make our industry attendee numbers the largest they have ever been.

Regards,

He also discussed the importance of hydraulic separation within a system and the available options for achieving separation. In addition to reviewing sizing a hydraulic separator, other functions that a hydraulic separator can provide were discussed. A hydraulic separator can also have air and dirt removal built-in to allow for one piece of equipment to perform three functions.

Our February meeting will be held on February 16th. The topic for the design class held from 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. will be Atmospheric and Pressure Vacuum Breakers. Our technical session will be on High Effi ciency Domestic Water Heating Design and will be presented by Josh Looper, P.E. from the R.L. Deppmann Company. Thank you to the Detroit ASHRAE Chapter for joining us for an annual meeting on January 19th!

Our 4th design class in our cross connection series covered Non-Testable Devices and Methods. The methods include air gap separation and barometric loops. Non-Testable Devices include hose connection vacuum breakers,

backfl ow preventers for beverage dispensing equipment, laboratory faucet vacuum breakers and other similar devices. Each method or device was presented with discussion on where usage is appropriate and if applicable the associated ASSE standard.

Our technical sessions were presented by Jody Samuell of Caleffi . Jody covered two topics, Hydraulic Separation and System Balancing. Jody discussed the importance of a properly balanced system and how to achieve it by utilizing balancing valves within the system. Several types of balancing valves were examined including variable orifi ce, fi xed orifi ce, direct reading balancing valves and dynamic balancing valves. He reviewed how each type of valve worked with the advantages and disadvantages of each type of valve.
