For more than 30 years now the City of Wilson has entrusted the trainees of Diversified Opportunities to do this job and thus provided DOI with an invaluable job training opportunity. Due to the variety of the work every single consumer that attends DOI's program is able to play a part and participate in the processing of the job. This is so important because it allows each and every one of DOI's trainees to go home week after week with a paycheck and a sense of worth as being part of the team and overall mission that DOI strives to accomplish. One of the best parts is that over the years these same trainees have been the very ones to help shape the processes used to complete this work. It is through this steady and unchanging relationship that DOI has realized the potential of this methodology. Diversified Opportunities has enjoyed a long standing relationship with the City of Wilson. One that they do not take for granted! As Diversified Opportunities longest standing business partner, DOI has been processing and mailing all of Wilson Energy's utility bills, seasonal flyers and cutoff notices. This is by far one of the most anticipated jobs that the trainees at DOI look forward to. Everyone enjoys and takes pride in "working the mail" as they commonly say.

DOI's trainees have continually found innovative ways to improve the process, increase productivity and accomplish the job more efficiently and accurately. DOI Expands its Adirondack Inventory...

DOI Recognized as Outstanding by CARF Accreditors... Diversified Opportunities recently underwent their CARF accreditation review. CARF is an accreditation service that works worldwide to set forth international standards for various service providers like DOI. CARF accredits over 53,000 entities worldwide and helps providers committed to continually improving their quality of services to the community. The accreditation process happens every three years and is a thorough multi-day process. Not only did Diversified Opportunities do well with their accreditation process but they were also commended as being an exemplary provider and were given no recommendation for improvement. As stated in previous newsletters, DOI takes great pride in offering the best possible services for its trainees and works closely as a team to accomplish these goals. If you know of someone seeking or needing services be sure to look for the CARF accreditation symbol wherever you go. If you choose to pursue services at Diversified Opportunities you can be assured that your loved one will receive the best services possible from a group of people who truly care!

Diversified Opportunities continues to grow and look for creative ways to serve its trainees. The most recent addition to DOI's program options is that of an arts and craft center that will initially focus on pottery and wood craft projects with the help of Patty Hudson and Tom O'Brien. The idea is to provide the trainees with another outlet to express their individuality and creativity. DOI feels that giving their trainees the freedom to express themselves and the opportunity to work independently will strengthen their ability to make decisions and work out everyday complications they will encounter. It will also be a great way for the trainees to learn about entrepreneurial ventures as the program evolves to provide handmade products for sale. Stay tuned for updates on how the program is developing in the coming newsletters.

DOI Placements We would like to offer our most sincere congratulations to the trainees listed below for making it through their first 90 days of employment. Great Job!

BB&T Lighthouse Projects...

Cherie Berry, North Carolina Department of Labor Commissioner, recently presented Brian and Eugenie with a plaque commemorating 10 consecutive years of safety in the workplace and outstanding work in accident prevention. DOI prides itself on maintaining a diligent focus on safety in the workplace and looks forward to continued years as an accident free workplace.

DOI has been selling Adirondack furniture for many years now but has recently decided to make this product a more main- stream part of its production process. With the addition of some new equipment and jigs the trainees are excited and proud to provide yet another quality product to the community. If you are interested in seeing what they have to offer stop by sometime to take a look around.

Diversified Opportunities enjoys a lot of support from BB&T and this year was no exception. Through BB&T's Lighthouse project, which involves volunteers coming out to support various non-profit organizations, DOI has benefited in many ways. BB&T has carried out three separate projects at DOI already this year, each being a great service to DOI and its trainees. They conducted a personal hygiene class with each trainee receiving a much appreciated goodie bag, put on a bluebird birdhouse build where they helped each trainee build their very own bluebird house and they also designed and planted a memorial garden at the front entrance of DOI to commemorate some past trainees dear to DOI. Diversified Opportunities would like to thank BB&T and all of the employee volunteers who have come out to support DOI and provide such meaningful experiences to all its trainees.
