Chevy Chase Land Company seeks to remove condition requiring shuttle bus service to grocery store

The Chevy Chase Land Company has asked that the County’s site plan requirement for shuttle service to a gro-cery store be removed as a site plan condition (see picture of sign above). This site plan requirement is in addition to an agreement entered into with the Village in 1998 with similar provisions. The Council, through its attorneys, is contending that the Land Company is not carrying out its obligations since the closure of the Giant in January. Let-ters have been sent to the County requesting enforcement of the site plan condition. So far, we have not received assistance from either Park and Planning or the Depart-ment of Permitting services. Residents can help. We are told that calls to 240-777-0311 registering a complaint with Permitting Services regarding the Land Company’s failure to comply with this site plan condition may make enforce-ment action more likely. It is certainly worth a try! Meanwhile, the Council is absolutely opposed to removal of this condition. We are currently running our own shuttle bus to the Westbard Giant three days a week in order to keep our residents from being unduly inconve-nienced. Chevy Chase Land Company is supposed to be providing this service.

Action taken at the April 13 Council meeting:

• Approved proposal from Lindsey & Associates to provide FY 2020 audit services for $11,000.

The next Council meeting, open to the public, will be Monday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m., via Zoom audio.

Maryland Primary Election postponed to June 2, will be by mailThe Maryland Primary Election, originally scheduled for late April, has been postponed to Tuesday, June 2. It will now be done primarily by mail. The Village Center will not be a polling place for this election. Voters will receive a mailed ballot from the State Board of Elections in early to mid-May. There will be some drop-off locations for voters to return their completed ballot. The state has not specified the locations as this goes to press.

Shredding truck returns May 20The shredding service returns to the Village on Wednesday, May 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. The truck will park on Friendship Boulevard adjacent to the Village Center. The driver will be wearing protective equipment. We will encourage all residents to do the same and to maintain social distancing while standing in line.

In this time of social distancing, a number of performers are taking to the Internet to connect with audiences. There will be no live performances at the Village Center until further notice, but we are offering links to a number of YouTube video concerts featuring some of Friendship Heights’ favorite performers. Marsha Goodman-Wood recreates her Village Playtime concerts virtually, while clarinetist Seth Kibel entertains “live from his basement” and harpist Kristen Jepperson offers a “QuaranTea.”

The Twin Springs Fruit Farm has a slightly different look this spring as the farmer’s market continues to bring fresh fruit, vegetables and other farm goods to the residents of Friendship Heights every Saturday. Amid concerns over the spread of COVID-19 and state-imposed restrictions, employees don masks and gloves to serve pre-packed produce to masked customers who are instructed to maintain proper social distancing. For information about pre-ordering produce, you may go to [email protected] or call the farm at 717-334-4582.
