President’s Message

Thoughts by Peter Gaul

Hello Everybody! I hope this finds each and every one of you having a good day. Just be thankful your eyes opened this morning and you were able to step on the grass instead of being below the grass.

It’s been a little chilly, but thank goodness no snow or sleet. Our March Dinner Dance was very successful. The food was great, and the entertainer was one of the best. She was wonderful, and a great voice too! Many, many thanks to Jan Day who won our 50/50, but was so kind to donate it back to the Center. Thanks Jane.

Our April Dinner Dance should be one of our best. Rick Brensinger is our entertainer, and chicken piccata will be served. Start creating your Spring Bonnet. The most creative will get a prize. -Dorene

Women: The Real Heroes Part 1 in a series about young women

Magdalena grew up on the Baron Vorpe’s castle estate on the Rhine River. Today, the Vorpe castle no longer exits except perhaps as one of the many piles of ruins along that scenic stretch of the river. In 1952, my army buddy Jim and I took a cruise down the Rhine River between Koblenz and Mainz. This is called the "Middle Rhine." Some 40 castles once stood along this valley, and at least the ruins of most of them are still there. A couple have been converted to hotels, a few have been preserved as tourist attractions or as private homes. The valley itself, with rocky bluffs sticking out between the green vineyards and little half-timbered towns, was worth the trip by themselves. I didn’t know about Magdalena at the time. In the spring of 1817, something happened to Magdalena, her husband Andrew and their two young children’s lives. We don’t know what. Perhaps it was then that the Vorpe castle was destroyed. We do know that Andrew, his pregnant wife Magdalena and their two little children left their home at Vorpe in 1817. They embarked on the sailing ship Xenophon. The voyage to America lasted 49 days. One can only imagine what it was like in the crowded hold of that ship. During the voyage, the two little children died and were buried at sea.

Andrew and his wife landed at Philadelphia on June 17, 1817. They went to the German settlement in Berks County, Pennsylvania, where eight more children were born: Mary Ann; born December 11, 1817. Elisabeth; born April 16, 1819. John; born August 2, 1820. Katherine; born February 16, 1822. Maria; born May 25, 1824. Susan; born February 12, 1826. Joseph; born September 20, 1828. Sarah; born in 1831. These Children were baptized at Goshenhoppen, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

SHUFFLEBOARD

You don’t have to be a member of the Shuffleboard Group to play shuffleboard. The requirement is the same as other programs at the center. If you want to play shuffleboard, you pay $1 for members or $2 for non-

members at the front desk. The equipment in the shuffleboard storage area is for anybody’s use. The front desk is to open the storage room and make them aware of the key to open the shuffleboard gate and instruct them to lock the gate, return the key to the storage room and lock the storage room door when finished.

Wickham Park Senior Center shuffleboard courts are located behind the building. Whether you are a beginner, or want to hone your skills, ask the staff at the front desk about setting up a game, just $4 per person and everything provided. Basic rules of scoring are posted on the equipment closet door. Get together a twosome or foursome and have some fun.
