Think Art! Develop your creativity, find and practice your own personal style, advance your drawing and lettering skills and boost your confidence as a creative individual through journaling. Participants will explore mixed media and collage techniques. Visual journaling is a powerful way to move beyond words in your daily reflections. Not only does working with images access a different part of our brains it is a source of playfulness and creative joy. Visual journals offer an avenue to restore the spirit through self-expression and ignite creativity. A $10 materials fee will be due to the instructor the first day of the workshop. Participants will need to bring a sketchbook and markers, black fine point and ultra-fine Sharpie markers, scissors, glue stick and one or two old magazines.

This class can provide a roadmap to put more laughter, joy, and humor in your life. Patch Adams, whose mirthful medicine is featured in the powerful movie starring Robin Williams, knows the inner side of healing. The movie reminds us that some of the most important factors in healing are not high-tech marvels but ordinary factors such as love, compassion, friendship, and hope. This class of using humor in your life and in the classroom is not about joke telling. This course is to help you reactivate and experience the healing power of laughter, joy and humor and will give you the prescription to help yourself and others feel healthier and happier.

Interactive student notebooks encourage active learning through use of critical thinking skills to organize and process content. The notebook (a spiral or composition book) is divided into two sides, a left side for learning and a right side for creative processing. Creativity is a messy job, but so engaging! Marbleizing, dyeing, paste paper and tie-dye are a few of the many artistic ways to change the surface of paper. All of this messiness will then become a project worthy of correlation with common core standards. We will create polyhedrons, volumetric forms, journals, and sculptural books. This workshop is designed as hands-on, promoting creativity, engagement, and project ideas using paper to be used in the classroom. Items to bring to class include: 9”x 12” or larger Watercolor paper (cold press student grade is fine), 2 cans of inexpensive shaving cream, scissors, watercolors, colored pencils, sharpie markers, xacto knife, inexpensive acrylic paint (if available). Classroom management in a middle school or high school may seem like herding cats one minute and nailing Jello to the wall the next. This workshop considers a number of inappropriate behaviors often observed in adolescents, the root cause of the behaviors, and “replacement behaviors” that might be substituted to make Life easier for students and teachers alike. This workshop has the primary goal of reviewing the nature, history, and struggles of “American democracy,” with the overarching aim of giving to give you the information and insights you need to develop ways of teaching your students about our democratic system, and in particular about the ways in which they will, in time, be able to contribute to it–mostly by voting, but also through paying attention to and perhaps even becoming involved in campaigns and elections. A secondary goal is to become more able to situate the upcoming elections of 2014 into America’s democratic history, so as to better be able to make the political contests of the coming school year more relevant to students.

Everyone loves a field trip! We will begin our journey on the morning of Tuesday, June 17 leaving from Friends University Wichita campus. On Wednesday we are off to Fairway, Lawrence, Lecompton, and Topeka where we will spend the night. On Thursday we will spend time in Topeka before travelling to Manhattan and then returning to Wichita that evening. Participants will get acquainted with fellow travelers, enjoy good food and accommodations, and visit some of the important pre-statehood sites in Kansas history. Teachers will go back to their classrooms with new insights and enthusiasm for the interesting history of our state. Workshops with Jon Maska in Olathe, Kansas Jon Maska has over 25 years of teaching experience in the Olathe School District and holds a Masters Degree in Administration from Fort Hays State University. He is a very active member in his school community where he teaches Social Studies and coaches volleyball, basketball and track. In addition, Jon coordinated a discipline and character education program as well as a driver’s education program. He has also served as athletic director and is one of the building’s lead NEA association reps.

The workshops Jon provides teachers are meaningful and realistic. Being a current classroom teacher Jon has an understanding of the demands placed on the teachers of today. Jon will be teaching his classes with longtime co-worker David vanThullenar. David brings an added excitement and energy to the classes.

The Neurodiversity Teacher2 credits | Grade Levels: ALLDelivery: On-Ground | 6/2/14-6/4/14 (8:00 am-5:00 pm) The Neurodiversity Teacher will explore and examine the strengths, talents, and abilities of students with a wide range of disabilities. In this class we will discover how to construct a learning experience that is positive in nature to fit the unique needs of each child. Using multiple books as a guide, we will learn how to apply strength-based concepts make it easier to align instruction of special needs with common core standards.

The Attitude Gap2 credits | Grade Levels: ALLDelivery: On-Ground | 6/9/14-6/11/14 (8:00 am-5:00 pm)We have all heard about the achievement gap, but have you ever thought about the aspects of what that means? Many of our students go home to deplorable situations where they face more challenges than any course they may encounter at school. This is where attitude plays a huge role in the development of students. As educators, we cannot feel sorry for them. Students do not need our sympathy. They need our inspiration and encouragement to change their realities for the better. In this class we will explore options for all students to strive for nothing less that excellence.

Reaching the Forgotten Students2 credits | Grade Levels: ALLDelivery: On-Ground | 6/16/14-6/18/14 (8:00 am-5:00 pm) Whenever students can’t remember, don’t comprehend, or won’t follow through on your instructions they tend to end up being forgotten about. Here’s a class that explores the root cause for these and other learning problems and shows you how to set students on the path to understanding and success. Real-life portraits of struggling students illustrate typical learning problems and help you diagnose and resolve them in your own classroom. The Diversified Teacher2 credits | Grade Levels: ALLDelivery: On-Ground | 7/7/14-7/9/14 (8:00 am-5:00 pm)Diversifying your teaching skills is something we all dream of, but very few master the art of teaching as a whole. In this class we will explore and discover a variety of teacher topics that all play an important role in our teaching today. Topics will range from Coaching in the Classroom to Students Who Challenge Us. This will be a fun, fast-paced class that reaches into the depths of our profession.

Alphabetic Phonics Introduction Course3 credits | Grade Levels: ALLDelivery: On-Ground | 6/2/14-6/13/14 (8:30 am-4:30 pm) or 7/7/14-7/18/14 (8:30 am-4:30 pm)Introduce the participant to the theory, instructional practices, and the development of secondary language, structure, history, curriculum, and terminology of the Alphabetic Phonics language curriculum. Prerequisites: Bachelor’s Degree, completed application, & interview.

Multisensory Reading and Spelling2 credits | Grade Levels: 4-12Delivery: On-Ground | 6/23/14-6/27/14 (8:30 am-3:30 pm) or 7/21/14-7/25/14 (8:30 am-3:30 pm)To give teachers of older students a curriculum and strategies for developing their students’ reading and spelling skills through instruction in the reliable reading patterns (six syllable types, syllable division) and spelling patterns and rules in the English language, and multisensory and discovery techniques for teaching reading and spelling skills. The course is designed for teachers of unskilled readers in grades 6-12 and teachers of postsecondary and adult students reading at the second grade levels.

The Right Road to Writing Instruction3 credits | Grade Levels: ALLDelivery: On-Ground | 7/14/14-7/18/14 (8:30 am-3:30 pm) Provide participants with research-based methods in writing instruction aimed to help students improve written expression skills.



Friends University Summer On-campus HousingAll individuals participating in Friends University’s summer graduate workshops are invited to stay in Green Residence Hall, one of Friends University’s on-campus facilities, for $20 per person per night. Housing is available from June 1-August 1, with the exception of a few days.

Green Residence Hall is divided into suites, with each suite containing three two-person bedrooms, a kitchen (including full refridgerator and microwave), two bathrooms and a living area. Suites contain furniture (beds, mattresses, etc.) but no linens are provided. This, all individuals are responsible for bringing their own sheets, towels, toiletries, etc. Local phone service, elevators, internet (hard-line connection, computer with Ethernet cord and cable are required), TV lounges, vending machines and laundry rooms are also available. The use of tobacco and alcohol is prohibited in all University facilities. Pets are not allowed in any buildings.

Individuals wishing to stay in Green Hall must sign up in advance and pay the full amount of their deposit before or upon move-in. To check on availability and sign up for these housing accommodations, please call the Office of Community and Residential Development at 316-295-5500. Green Residence Hall is located at 710 S. St. Clair.

Print out the final page with the transaction number and bring it to the first day of class.

Tuition is $150 per credit hour. All online classes include an additional $30 per credit hour technology fee in the tuition price. For online or blended courses, additional computer requirements may be found at friends.edu/frequently-asked-questions-2.

No pre-registrations will be taken the first day of the workshop. All pre-registration must be completed prior to the start of the workshop.

An email reminder will be sent the week before the start of the workshop.

No refunds will be issued beginning one week prior to the workshop start date. A $25 cancellation fee per credit hour will be assessed on all refunds requested. If the minimum number of participants do not enroll, the workshop will be cancelled, whereupon you will be notified and a full refund will be given. No transfers will be given on the beginning day of the workshop.

All workshops will be letter-graded. As a result, projects/assignments will be assessed. Unofficial grade letters will be mailed out from the Registrar after the grades have been posted to your transcript.
