Co-Prez Corner
-Sherry Weene & Jane Harrington-
Warmest Spring greetings to you all. Sherry and I look forward to seeing you out and about at the library now that the warm weather is here. We had an extremely well attended and greatly appreciated “Soup & Sweets” this past March, especially since many in our town were still without electricity at that time. Our community outreach program “One Book/ One Child” once again successfully enhanced our mission to promote literacy in Moultonborough. We continue to support the Children’s programs as well as our literature discussions se-ries with scholars, casual book talks, Humanity Council Programs, several delicious and profitable F.A.C.T. events and free passes to local activities.
We are planning a wonderful “Literary Adventure” for June which we think that you will all enjoy so don’t procrastinate about securing your spot as space is limited.
Once again we wish to express our thanks and appreciation for your support financially and time wise that help keep our library the town treasure that it is. In that vein, we strongly urge you to renew your membership and to tell your friends and neighbors about joining us. There is always room at our board meetings for new faces and fresh ideas. We will welcome you warmly, so come on in on the 1st Thursday of the month at 10:00!!
Library Director’s Report Nancy McCue

One Book One Child Program
By Sherry Weene
Through the “One Book, One Child” program each child in the Moultonborough Central School receives his or
her own personal copy of a book each year. A bookplate in each book designates that it was a gift from the
Friends. The goal of the One Book One Child is to promote literacy, to acquaint students with our library
resources and to encourage them to participate in MPL activities.
This Friends program began in 2012 when kindergarteners first received books from the Friends. Those chil-
dren are now in the fourth grade. As we celebrate our 5th year presenting books to the children in the school,
those original children each have 5 books in their personal home libraries!
This school year children in Kindergarten received their books from the Friends in October. In March the
school celebrated “I Love Reading” month and books were presented to grades 1 through 6 at the end of this
month-long celebration.
Working with the teachers and the librarian at the school, the Friends selected titles for the children and de-
livered the books to the school on March 31st. In all, 210 books were purchased.
Grade 1 students received They All Saw a Cat by Brendan Wenzel Grade 2 students received Commander in Cheese Book #1 The Big Move & Book #2 Oval Office Escape by
Lindsey Leavitt Grade 3 students received The Poet’s Dog by Patricia MacLachlan Grades 4 students received Word of Mouse by James Patterson Grade 5 students received Sophia’s War by Avi
Grade 6 students received The Inquisitor’s Tale by Adam Gidwitz.

Literary Discussion Series
Spring 2017: Relationships
Susan R. Merrifield
An Exciting Kick-Off for the Spring
During the fall, we explored the theme of relationships in Jane Eyre, Station Eleven and Plainsong. On April 20, we investigated a different sort of relationship when, our first spring scholars, Ed Harrington and Bruce Roberts, discussed the relationship between Generals Marshall and Eisenhower and the partnerships and mentors that each man had in his life. Both our scholars were drafted during the Vietnam War and both are Moultonborough residents. Retired Brigadier General and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army Ed Harrington and retired horticulturist and former New England Coordinator of Vietnam Veterans Against the War Bruce Roberts brought both their military and leadership experiences to the discussion of Partners in Command by military historian, Mark Perry
With compelling references to Perry’s book and other relevant sources, our scholars explored how Dwight Eisenhower and George Marshall formed one of the most important military partnerships of World War II. In reading and discussing this work of non-fiction, those who attended the discussion came to understand how these two national leaders balanced each other’s strengths and weaknesses with nothing less at stake than the fate of democracy and the defeat of fascism. Unlike the other relationships explored in our 2016-2017 series, the relationship between Marshall and Eisenhower was not about love, loss or spirituality but leader-ship and diplomacy. In fact, Eisenhower and Marshall were never even friends.
The men and women who met to discuss Partners in Command appreciated talking about the significance of this historically important collaboration. It is our hope that the many men who took part in the vibrant liter-ary conversation on April 20 will return to our discussions.
Pulitzer Prize winner Marilynne Robinson’s Lila on Thursday, May 25 at 10:30. The convention of the impoverished and abandoned or neglected child is almost a staple in Western litera-ture. Think about Jane Eyre, Oliver Twist, Anne Shirley or Harry Potter. Like these children, Robinson’s Lila is vulnerable and isolated until her protector rescues her. A poor drifter, Doll feeds Lila’s body and soul in the same limited manner in which she cares for herself. As she becomes a young woman, Lila comes to the attention of the widowed preacher, John Ames. The minister is capable of a consistent loving kindness that Lila has never known. In her married life with Ames, Lila is haunted by images from her chaotic past; yet she still experiences both grace and redemption. Set in a small town during the 1930’s through 1950’s, this is a simple and symbolic American landscape in which the bible and a spare Christianity inform the thinking of daily life. Dr. Linda Brion-Miesels, Professor Emerita of Psychology ay Lesley University, who lead our 2016 discussion of The Bell Jar will return to Moultonborough to discuss the relationships in Robinson’s beautifully written novel. Hear Ye, Hear Ye!! Let’s Dine at
WALTER’S BASIN in HOLDERNESS
Don't miss dining out locally with the Friends when we have a FACT (Feed A Charity Today) event. You won't have to cook plus you'll have a great afternoon or even-ing out with “FRIENDS”! The drill is you must tell your server that you are with the Friends. In turn, the host restaurant will typically donate 10% (sometimes even a bit more) of all food and beverage receipts from Friends to the Friends of the MPL. Restaurants that have kind-ly hosted the Friends are Corner House Inn, Hobbs, Giuseppe’s, the Woodshed and Center Harbor Diner. Keep your antennae in tune for information about FACT events, which usually occur once a month.
We hope that you will come to the next FACT event for the Friends on May 22 at Walters Basin, Route 3, Hold-erness, NH. (603 968-4412) Lunch served 11:30 - 4:30 and Dinner: 4:30 – 9:00 pm.
Very Important - Don't forget to tell your server that your group is part of the Friends. Please support the Friends!
Literary Discussion Series - Spring 2017: Relationships (continued from page 6)
On July 20, 2017, author Mary Hays will discuss her debut novel, Learning to Drive.
Hays portrays two sisters who are strongly influenced by their religious beliefs. In 1952, Charlotte McGuffey both re-embraces Christian Science and decides to separate from her husband with whom she has felt in-creasingly estranged. Just days after Charlotte announces her desire for a separation, her husband, Melvin, dies in a car accident. Trying to make sense of both Melvin’s death and her own life, Charlotte travels with her children to her husband’s hometown where her faith, identity, and sense of obligation are challenged. This is a story of transformational relationships and the power of the human mind and spirit.
We are thrilled to have author Mary Hays return to Moultonborough to discuss her own work. You may recall that Mary’s 2016 analysis of The Great Gatsby was both well attended and well received. Several of you re-quested more of this scholar. And here you have it!

SOUP ‘n SWEETS
By Linda Ridenour
The Friends would like to send out a huge thanks to everyone who attended our annual Soup 'n Sweets Luncheon held on March 17th!! This "thank you" to our community was a highlight of the snowy, stormy season! Even though Mother Nature tried her best that week to disrupt our plans, the event went on as scheduled and without a hitch! We featured an excellent selection of soups, chowders and chili--with no duplications--and a great variety of dessert goodies....some very green for the day!! Once we learned that the power was indeed "on" at the library, our Friends "team" went full speed ahead to host a very successful luncheon which attracted nearly 100 happy folks! Although many households in the area were still without electricity, water, phone, computer connections, or had large trees fallen/damage on their roads or property, the luncheon was very well attended! Again, thanks to all for your support and to those who provided our food and set up/clean up! See you soon at another Friends-sponsored event!!

Have you considered giving a gift of books or a dona-tion to the Library Memorial Fund as a way to mark a significant occasion? What a wonderful method for a community member to honor that special someone as well as to reaffirm the excellent quality of the work done by the library staff and trustees. A donation to the Library, whether due to the sadness of a bereave-ment or to commemorate a happier occasion such as a birthday or anniversary serves a dual purpose. It acknowledges that special person or occasion and, of course, enhances the library's ability to provide addi-tional material to our patrons who will appreciate these gifts for years to come. It is truly a gift that keeps on giving.
Count me in: I want to support
our amazing library!
The Friends of the Moultonborough Library is open to all who love our library. Bring your ideas and suggestions and join us.
