2018 FALL/WINTER NEWSLETTER
One Book, One Child Program Begins its Seventh Year
The Friends of the Moultonborough Public Library has begun the seventh year of the One Book, One Child program. Each year the One Book, One Child program has provided every child in the Moultonborough Central School (MCS) with his or her own personal copy of a hardcover book. This year the program included the new preschool classes which were just added at MCS in September. Working with teachers and the school librarian, the Friends select award-winning titles for each grade level and deliver the books to the school. The goal of the One Book, One Child program is to encourage a love of reading and to familiarize children with the wonderful resources available at the Moultonborough Public Library.
The One Book, One Child program began in 2012 when each child in the school first received books from the Friends. Since then the Friends have donated over 1300 books to the school children at a cost of over $13,000.
On October 24th the Friends visited the kindergarten classes at MCS and read the book “Wolf in the Snow” written and illustrated by Matthew Cordell. This book was the winner of the prestigious Caldecott Medal
Award this past January. Each kindergartener was presented with a personal copy of the book to take home.

Jane Harrington is 2018 Mary Rice Award Winner!
Jane Harrington was honored with the Mary Rice Award by the Friends of the Moultonborough Library during the Book Author Luncheon held on September 24th at the Bald Peak Colony Club. She is the 21st recipient of this special award which is given annually to an individual who personifies outstanding voluntary service to The Friends of the Library, the Library staff and the Moultonborough Library. Although Jane did not get her first Moultonborough Library card until 2008, she quickly became a passionate member of the Friends. By 2012 she was the Vice President and then became President from 2014-2018. Her exuberant style coupled with humor and excellent organizational skills led the Friends to both grow
in membership and donations as well as increasing the scope of the organization. The original presentation was called “The Outstanding Volunteer Award” and the first person chosen was Mary Rice in 1998. Thereafter the name was changed and became the annual Mary Rice Award. The Friends of the Moultonborough Library meet monthly. Call the Library at 476-8895 or stop by to join.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Greetings Library Friends,
Our fall season began with an extremely successful Book/Author Luncheon held at Bald Peak Colony Club. Our author Benjamin Ludwig, who was a graduate from Moultonborough Academy, entertained us with his many stories of local color and his writing adventures. Many of
the attendees had read his debut novel “Ginny Moon”. We had a delightful speech by Sandra Kelly, introducing our Mary Rice Award winner, Jane Harrington! The centerpieces, handmade by our own Linda Ridenour, were as amazing as the many raffle baskets she crafted.
Our Chocolate Fare in October was a sweet success! Save the date, March 8, 2019 for our very popular Soup and Sweets. I would also like to invite you to the Library Open House on Friday, December 7th from 11:00 – 2:00.
The Friends are very excited to announce our House Tour 2019, on Thursday, June 20th. This event is our biggest fundraiser and we welcome anyone that would like to volunteer to help us. Your donations and membership renewals help provide the many and varied programs offered by this library to the adults and children of our community. We thank you for your continued support. Why not attend one of our meetings and see for yourself what and how we do it. All are welcome!
See you around the library!
Sherry Weene
Time sure flies, please send in your 2018 dues if you have not already done so. You help make a difference with your generous contributions. Thank you!

Two-Part Invention: The Story of a Marriage
by Madeleine L’Engle
Most of us have read and loved L’Engle’s Newbury Award
winning children’s book, A Wrinkle in Time. Many literary critics
claim that the beauty of her prose is at its peak in this memoir
of her long marriage to actor, Hugh Franklin. The writer paints
a beautiful, almost spiritual portrait of a marriage as it matures
through decades. In this work, we experience a “traditional”
marriage and find that it is as dynamic and evolving as any
other.
Writer Mary Hays returns to us to lead this just-before-
Thanksgiving discussion of L’Engle’s critically acclaimed
memoir. Our experience of sharing Hays’ novel Learning to Drive heightens my
anticipation of what this insightful and creative writer will have to say about this
revelatory story of a marriage...

ANNUAL SOUP 'N SWEETS LUNCHEON

CHOCOLATE FARE A RESOUNDING SUCCESS I hope you were one of the 75+ folks who enjoyed chocolate on a sunny Friday afternoon, October 26th at the MPL!! Not only did we have a beautifully-decorated Program Room, but the selection of chocolate desserts and delicious cocoa were "out of this world"!! There were 4 large tables filled with tasty goodies from cookies and bars to decadent chocolate cakes, pies, truffles, cannoli, mousse, and candies...in addition, you had your choice of coffee, tea or cocoa! There were two raffles offered, as well. One was a pretty basket filled with all sorts of chocolate items to tempt your palate, and one was a hand-made Fall wreath with a cute pumpkin in the middle! Our most sincere thanks to all who supported this annual event and to all Friends of the Library who baked, set up, greeted, replenished plates and drinks, and those who helped clean up...a grateful tribute to all! We could not have done it without each and every one of you! Linda Ridenour

Have you considered giving a gift of books or a donation to the Library Memorial Fund as a way to mark a significant occasion? What a wonderful method for a community member to honor that special someone as well as to reaffirm the excellent quality of the work done by the library staff and trustees. A donation to the Library, whether due to the sadness of a bereavement or to commemorate a happier occasion such as a birthday or anniversary serves a dual purpose. It acknowledges that special person or occasion and, of course, enhances the library's ability to provide additional material to our patrons who will appreciate these gifts for years to come. It is truly a gift that keeps on giving.
Count me in: I want to support
our amazing library!
The Friends of the Moultonborough Library is open to all who love our library. Bring your ideas and suggestions and join us. Meetings are held at the library on the first Thursday of the month at 10:30 a.m. except for January and February. Please send in your membership dues with the form on the back page. Your membership dues help offset some of the library expenses for special adult and children’s programs, museum passes, and capital improve-ments. Our membership year runs from January to December.
