Letter From the President

Dear Friends,

In 1991, a group of dedicated citizens realized that building public

support for a fledgling county park system was crucial for its future.

This group became the Friends of the Monmouth County Park System, and

its resourcefulness and philanthropy helped grow our parks.

We still need to build public support and foster an awareness of

parks and conservation values. A strong sense of stewardship is more

important than ever with our changing demographics and landscape.

Our partnerships with other organizations lead to involvement, and

involvement leads to awareness.

Our mission is to support Monmouth County Park System programs

and projects that are beyond the reach of limited appropriated dollars.

In these difficult economic times your support for the Friends of the

Monmouth County Park System ensures that the evolving history and rich

heritage of our county parks remain vital and relevant.

The year 2011 marked the 20th Anniversary of the Friends of the

Monmouth County Park System. I am proud to have served as President

during this milestone year.

Our MissionThe Friends of the Monmouth County Park System, Inc., is a member-based, 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides financial support exclusively for Monmouth County Park System enhancements, including:

• preserving historical and natural resources,• providing recreational opportunities for urban youth, and• providing activities for individuals with disabilities within the community.

PartnershipsThe Friends established mutually-beneficial partnerships with people, other non-profit organizations, and clubs, allowing them to use the Monmouth County parks and facilities. Some of the partnerships are listed below.

New Jersey State Employee Charitable Campaign (NJSECC) and Monmouth County Public Employee Charitable Campaign (MCPECC)These two programs allow state and county employees to contribute to the Friends through payroll deductions. Employee matching gift programs also increased the funds channeled to the Friends.

Local Runners Go the DistanceThe Jersey Shore Running Club, led by Mary Moriarty and Tom Morrison, donated the proceeds from two trail runs to help maintain and upgrade Monmouth County Park System trails.

Bench Donation ProgramThis program allows families and friends to establish a lasting tribute to loved ones by placing a bench in designated areas in the Monmouth County Park System. In 2011, the following benches were added:

• In Deep Cut Gardens, by Marc Heyhoe in memory of Tom and Joyce Waterson

• On the Henry Hudson Trail, by Tom Turesson and Family in memory of October

Deep Cut Gardens Commemorative TreeWith this program, families and friends may add leaves to the Deep Cut Gardens commemorative tree in memory of loved ones. In 2011, the following leaves were added by:

• Garden State Daylily Growers in memory of Betty Harwood• Friends of the Monmouth County Park System in honor of Thomas Sannelli

Seabrook-Wilson House, Bayshore Waterfront Park, Port MonmouthThis project consisted of designing, fabricating, and installing exhibits to illustrate the ecology of Sandy Hook Bay, the history of the Seabrook-Wilson House, and the vital connection between this site and the greater Bayshore community.

Hartshorne Woods Wayside ExhibitDuring the World War II era, Hartshorne Woods Park was called Battery Lewis. The site was strategic to the nation’s defense of the Atlantic Ocean and Hudson Bay. The Friends funded wayside exhibits illustrating the historical significance of the site.

Historic Walnford ChinaThe Friends purchased china that belonged to the Waln family from a Philadelphia auction house. The china matches fragments that were uncovered in archeological digs on the estate.

Manasquan Reservoir Playground EquipmentThrough the generosity of Saker ShopRite®, Inc. and Coca-Cola® Company, the Friends replaced the

Manasquan Reservoir playground equipment that was damaged by Hurricane Irene.

Fisherman’s Cove Native PlantingsThe Manasquan River Watershed Association, through the Friends, provided the funding for native plantings for Fisherman’s Cove in Manasquan. The Boy Scouts did the planting as an Eagle Scout project.

Employee EducationThe Friends restricted funding allowed six Monmouth County Park System employees to attend continuing education training seminars.

Special Projects Completed in 2011Our mission is the foundation for all our processes, decisions, and accomplishments. In support of our mission, the Friends completed the following projects in 2011.

New exhibits in the Seabrook-Wilson House located within Bayshore Waterfront Park, Port Monmouth

Annual DistributionsIn 2011, the Friends planned and allocated funds for the programs described below.

Programs for Urban YouthThrough the Recreation Assistance Program (RAP), the Friends provided 20 scholarships for children from Monmouth County’s urban communities. The children attended week-long summer camps (including door-to-door transportation), summer concerts, boat tours, farm tours, and programs at the Monmouth County Park System’s Coastal Activity Center in Asbury Park

Programs for VolunteersVolunteers comprise a valuable asset of the Monmouth County Park System. They participate as docents in various park locations as well as assist with programs such as therapeutic riding lessons, historical interpretation, and outdoor adventures. They also provide thousands of hours of labor in building and maintaining over 120 miles of park trails, beaches, and gardens.

To honor the volunteers, the Friends sponsored the National Trails Day Luncheon, provided dessert at the Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, and paid for and sent Thanksgiving greetings to all volunteers.

Programs for Individuals with DisabilitiesThe Friends sponsored the Annual Therapeutic Recreation Formal Dinner Dance held at the Holland Activity Center in Tatum Park. Young adults with disabilities enjoyed an evening of dinner, dancing, games, and prizes.

The Friends also sponsored a beach outing to Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park and a trip to Disney on Ice –Toy Story, which included transportation, admission, and refreshments.

Friends Annual MeetingRumson-Fair Haven Bank & Trust sponsored the buffet breakfast served to 115 Friends members who attended the 2011 Annual Membership Meeting held at Hominy Hill Golf Course. At the meeting, new Board members Catherine H. Niederer and Robert Niederer were confirmed by the membership. After a brief business meeting lead by President-Elect Heather Colella, Monmouth County Park System Ranger Ralph Johnson gave a presentation on fossil hunting in Monmouth County, volunteer Pete Brady spoke about “Tales From a Walnford Fiddler,” and Executive Director Maria Wojciechowski gave a presentation on the history book The Monmouth County Park System – The First Fifty Years.

Ballads in the WoodsThe Holland Activity Center in Tatum Park provided the setting for the Ballads in the Woods concert given by the D-Major Singers:Irene Hague, Lois Lyons, Pete Brady, and Jim Cusick. Wegmans of Manalapan provided dinner and dessert.

Annual Golf OutingThe Friends Annual Golf Outing was held at Hominy Hill Golf Course in Colts Neck. The outing began with lunch, followed by 18 holes of golf on the Robert Trent Jones designed championship course. This par 72 course is rated as one of the top 25 public courses by Golf Digest. The outing concluded with cocktails, dinner, and prizes.

Deep Cut Gardens Open HouseThe Friends provided the funds for hundreds of rose bushes and boxwoods on display at the Deep Cut Gardens Open House. The Friends also provided refreshments for the visitors.

Memorial CeremonyThe Monmouth County Park System hosted a Memorial Ceremony on September 11, 2011, at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook in Atlantic Highlands, the site of the Monmouth County 9/11 Memorial. The guest speaker was Captain David J. Harrison, Commanding Officer at Earle Naval Weapons Station. The Friends provided

refreshments donated by Delicious Orchards, Sickles Market™, and Wegmans of Manalapan.

Strut Your Mutt

The owners of 75 costume-clad dogs and numerous spectators watched

canines compete in the Friends Annual Strut Your Mutt Halloween Parade and Costume Contest. The contest was sponsored by Garden State Veterinary Specialists, and took place at the Off-Leash Dog Area in Thompson Park. The audience also

observed a demonstration given by the K-9 Unit of the Monmouth

County Sheriff ’s Office.
