Friends of the Earth (HK) Project Green! O Camp

Suggested Green Actions for Orientation Camps in Tertiary Institutions

(May 2015) Background According to a survey conducted by Friends of the Earth (HK) in 2014, over 90 per cent of orientation camp (O Camp) participants and respondents reckoned the non-environmentally friendly practices in these camps, including excessive souvenirs or promotional products (65%), water wastage (65%) and food wastage (51 %). Therefore, since 2014, Friends of the Earth (HK) has gathered helpers from different tertiary education institutes to initiate the Green! O Camp Project. All O Camps are invited to accept green challenges – taking green actions in the camps to help reduce waste, cherish food, save water and reduce carbon footprints. With the organization of the second Green! O Camp this year, we hope to further boost the green culture among higher education institutes through the first activity that most freshmen would join – O Camps. To provide concrete ideas on how to organize green orientation camps for tertiary institutes and O Camp organizers, Friends of the Earth (HK), together with a number of local green tertiary student societies, formed the Green! O Camp working committee and published the “Suggested Green Actions for Orientation Camps" pamphlet. The pamphlet aims to provide practical green suggestions to O Camp organizers on four aspects – ‘cherish food, reduce waste, reduce carbon emission and save water’. Through this, we hope to encourage O Camp organizers to be environmental conscious when they plan the camps, and invite their campers to personally support and take green measures. A detailed version of each suggested green action is available at www.foe.org.hk/goc.

Strategy of "Suggested Green Actions for Orientation Camps in Tertiary Institutes" Most environmental problems in Hong Kong originated from our wasteful consumption behavior. While we enjoy a quick, convenient mode of living, a large amount of invaluable resources are indeed being consumed, causing problems of waste, energy shortage and water crisis. Take waste as an example, Hong Kongers dump 9,547 tonnes of waste to the landfills every day, which is equivalent to the weight of 398 double-decker buses. Food waste accounts for approximately 40 per cent of this amount, while plastic and paper each takes up 20 per cent. Most of these materials, despite being avoidable and recyclable, are, however, sent to the landfills. While the three existing landfills in Hong Kong will soon be full, large-scale expansion is needed. However, to effectively solve Hong Kong’s waste problem in the long run, joint effort of the whole community is needed by reducing waste at source. The principle of an environmentally-friendly orientation camp:

Page 4: Friends of the Earth (HK)sub.cedars.hku.hk/cms/htdoc/upload/other_file/aec... · 3. If there is too much rice, inform the canteen at once and request less rice in the following meals

Practical green suggestions for orientation camp I. Cherish food to achieve ‘ZERO food waste’ Preparation 1. Order right amount of food:

• Clearly know the number of campers and amount of people enjoying each meal so as to order the right amount of food.

• After orientation camp application deadline, confirm again with the campsite canteen the actual number of campers and amount of food needed.

• Consider reducing the portion of the dishes and preparing dried food and fruit as backup.

• Group leaders can try to gather information regarding the food preferences of their group members before the camp (e.g. are they vegans?). Provide ‘less rice’ option.

2. Thoughtful arrangement:

• Other than the price, also pay attention to the quality of food to avoid food wastage due to poor taste.

• Allow enough time for each meal so that the participants have plenty of time to finish their food.

During O Camp

1. Eat before chanting slogan. Enjoy the food when it is hot and the most delicious.

2. Empty your plate or pack any surplus food: • Encourage campers to finish all food. • Pack any surplus food and store them properly so it can be enjoyed later.

(applicable to campsites with fridge and food re-heating facilities)

3. If there is too much rice, inform the canteen at once and request less rice in the following meals.

4. Recycle any food waste (applicable to campsites with food waste recycling facilities)

5. Respect food and never use food as game props. 6. Donate packaged food to the needy before it is expired.

Page 5: Friends of the Earth (HK)sub.cedars.hku.hk/cms/htdoc/upload/other_file/aec... · 3. If there is too much rice, inform the canteen at once and request less rice in the following meals

II. Reduce waste to achieve ‘ZERO waste burying’ 1. Say NO to disposables

• Ask campers to bring reusable bottles and fully utilize the water dispensers at the campsites to reduce use of disposable plastic bottles.

• Say no to disposable tableware, lunchboxes, packaged drinks, Styrofoam cup noodles, etc. They can only be used once, but are non-recyclable and take hundreds of years to degrade in the landfill.

• Try to arrange the meals in the campsite canteen to reduce use of disposable lunchboxes. If lunchboxes are really needed, choose suppliers that provide ‘green lunchboxes (reusable lunchboxes’). (Refer to www.foe.org.hk/goc to get more ideas on choices of green lunchboxes)

• When you prepare camp materials, try to reuse old materials.

2. Reduce paper use • Replace printed materials with electronic/online version for promotion and

registration. • Tissue papers account for about 7 per cent of our daily municipal waste!

Remind participants to bring their own towels and reduce use of tissue paper. (Source: www.legco.gov.hk/yr13-14/chinese/panels/ea/papers/ea0328cb1-417-1-c.pdf)

3. Camp T-shirt One camp T-shirt is enough. Choose O Camp T-shirt made of cotton as first priority because it has better

sweat-absorbing ability and is more durable. T-shirt of natural colour is more preferable to reduce dyeing.

Before mass production, request a T-shirt sample from the manufacturer. This helps lower the chance of waste due to quality problem.

4. Reduce souvenirs and sponsored items

• The amount of sponsorship is never an indicator of whether an O Camp is successful or not. Avoid producing excessive and impractical souvenirs.

• Choose practical, durable and reusable souvenirs (e.g. water bottles, eco cutlery and towels) as first priority.

• Souvenirs with beautiful and practical designs can increase their chances of repeated usage.

• Learn to SAY NO! Refuse low-quality and over-packaged products, packaged food and drinks, etc., which are non-environmentally friendly.

Page 6: Friends of the Earth (HK)sub.cedars.hku.hk/cms/htdoc/upload/other_file/aec... · 3. If there is too much rice, inform the canteen at once and request less rice in the following meals

• Items that campers find unsuitable can be returned to the O Camp OCs and redistributed to the needy later on.

5. Waste recycling

• Encourage campers to recycle together. • Find out what recycling facilities are available at the campsite, or set up your

own recycling system, if needed.

6. Reuse or donate surplus materials • After the camp, properly store the remaining materials, such as banners,

roll-up banners, helper badges, etc. and use them again in later activities or O Camps in the following years.

III. Reduce carbon emission Energy conservation

1. Choose classroom/activity room of appropriate size to reduce energy wastage.

2. Before leaving any classroom/activity room, switch off all lights, computers, air-conditioners and any other electrical equipment. Appoint a specific person to be responsible for this.

3. Completely switch off any electrical equipment not in use. Don’t leave it in

‘stand-by’ mode. 4. Choose outdoor sites for activity if possible. Make good use of natural light and

ventilation.

5. For indoor activities, use natural ventilation or fans if possible. If air-conditioning is really needed, make sure the windows are tightly closed and the temperature is adjusted to 25.5 degrees Celsius. In case of strong sunlight, use the curtains in the room to increase energy efficiency of the air-conditioner.

Carbon reduction

1. Reduce travelling footprint: • When designing city orientation activities, plan a nearby route, such as

within the campus, campsite or nearby community. It is better if these places can be reached on foot.

• If transportation is needed, choose the means of public transport with the

Page 7: Friends of the Earth (HK)sub.cedars.hku.hk/cms/htdoc/upload/other_file/aec... · 3. If there is too much rice, inform the canteen at once and request less rice in the following meals

lowest carbon emission. (Refer to www.foe.org.hk/goc to find which means of public transport has the lowest carbon emission)

2. Low-carbon diet: • More vegetables and less meat. • Say NO to beef and choose food with lower carbon emission instead, such as

fish, chicken and pork. • For food purchases, choose seasonal and local produce to lower carbon

emissions in transport.

3. Put forward a ‘veg meal’ in the camp, which is a low-carbon and healthier option.

4. Substitute campfire session with other creative activities. IV. Save water 1. No water games or limit the amount of water used. If water games cannot be

cancelled, go to the beach and use sea water instead of drinking water. 2. No matter in the wild or campsite, avoid using dyes, chemicals or any materials

that may pollute the water.

3. Encourage participants to shorten shower time. Tips for a successful Green! O Camp:

(1) Put this in the meeting agenda as early as possible: On the one hand, much wastage can be reduced with careful planning; on the other hand, support and participation of organizers can be guaranteed at an early stage, which will foster a better implementation.

(2) Appoint a green officer/ambassador: assign someone in the organizing committee to be responsible for all the environment-related issues to coordinate, monitor, and follow up all the green measures put forward in the camp.

you as soon as possible if they prefer not having the meal □ Offer an alternative for O Campers – “Less Rice" □ If there is too much rice, inform the canteen immediately

Green Action 5: Clear your plate or pack away surplus

□ Work closely with Action 1 - "Order right amount of food" □ Allow enough time for participants to finish their meal □ Enjoy the food when they are hot and the most delicious □ Packing food is never troublesome for the sake of the

environment □ Let participants choose some of the main dishes in order to

reduce leftovers due to participants' preference on food

Green Action 6: Respect food and no food-wasting game

□ Avoid using food as game props □ If food is used in games, the game designers should request

participants to finish the food after the games □ Real food can be replaced with pseudo-food props □ On the other hand, why not design games to cherish food!

Green Action 7: Always use reusable cutlery

□ OCs and team leaders should set a good example themselves to reduce the use of disposable products

□ Use the reusable cutlery provided by the campsite, or remind campers to bring along their own cutlery to the camp

Green Action 8: Say NO to disposable lunchboxes

□ Have the meal in the campsite canteen so as to reduce the use of one-time disposable lunchboxes

Page 11: Friends of the Earth (HK)sub.cedars.hku.hk/cms/htdoc/upload/other_file/aec... · 3. If there is too much rice, inform the canteen at once and request less rice in the following meals

Page 12: Friends of the Earth (HK)sub.cedars.hku.hk/cms/htdoc/upload/other_file/aec... · 3. If there is too much rice, inform the canteen at once and request less rice in the following meals

• 學習 SAY NO!

Page 13: Friends of the Earth (HK)sub.cedars.hku.hk/cms/htdoc/upload/other_file/aec... · 3. If there is too much rice, inform the canteen at once and request less rice in the following meals

Page 14: Friends of the Earth (HK)sub.cedars.hku.hk/cms/htdoc/upload/other_file/aec... · 3. If there is too much rice, inform the canteen at once and request less rice in the following meals

Green! O Camp
