PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Wendy and I have been in Europe with our daughter for most of the month of May, so I don’t have a lot to say about my activities (!) in Friends for that time. At least our tree problem has been solved – just

got to hope the tree continues to live and grow, otherwise it’s all got to come down!!

We are back into it, and the big project getting closer every day is National Tree Day on Sunday 29th July.

Planning is pretty much completed and we are working with Garry Lalor to ensure everything is right on the day. The plants and trees are ready for the day and we are planning arrangements to get them to the site. That will of course be done by Garry and his team in the Parks Vic. trucks.

We are planning on loading the trucks on Friday the 27th. They will be taken to the site on Saturday 28th July. The trucks will be used to transport equipment such as stakes, plant guards and tools on the Sunday - NATIONAL TREE DAY! We will publicise the event in a number of ways and hope to have a good crowd of volunteers on the day. We expect to have work to do for a few days after Planting Day so it will be good if a few of you can come to the site for this – precise details later.

Please be aware of where to park on the day – it is a bit of a walk from the car park to the planting site.

Now, to other matters:-

• A Working Bee continues to work on managing the Shepherds Bush area, with strong support from members, on the Biodiversity Enhancement Day each month.

• Freya continues to run the working bee for the Gardens at Park Base which is looking very good. Freya has also proposed a plan to remove weeds from areas where we have planted lots of new trees and shrubs in the last 12 months and that work has started.

• Waterwatch is back in action after wet weather caused it to be cancelled. Christine is organising the day - see the calendar of events fordetails.

Look forward to seeing you at a working bee soon! Best Regards to all.

FRIENDS OF DANDENONG VALLEY PARKLANDS NEWSLETTER

We did some major clearing work last time in the gardens – weeding in the ditch, and clearing away a big dead wattle and other diseased material in the outer Indigenous garden.

After such a dry start to the year, some rain in May has been followed by more since then, 51.5 mm so far in June (as at 24/6). Last Gardens Morning we planted in the Indigenous garden, but only 14 plants, as the soil was still so dry. However the rain means we’ll be able to plant more this coming Sunday. In the Community Garden the major clearing work begun in the ditch last time means we could maybe plant some Grass trigger plants (Stylidium graminifolium) there. A book on Alpine plants says they are OK with “boggy”.

In the Indigenous Garden, it’s good to see the Bulbine lilies we planted last year coming up – and in the outside garden, Yam daisies have appeared, many self-sown, looking so like weeds that I’ve tried to put a stake next to each one. Also looking like weeds are some surviving self-sown Groundsels (Senecio) which we found under the big dead wattle. There are new weeds all over the place if you feel like going after them. Acacias, Indigo and Tree violets are covered in small buds – that exciting promise that warmer sunnier times will return again . . .

I hope to see you at 95 Shepherd Road on Sunday July 1, from 10 a.m.

SHEPHERDS BUSH BIODIVERSITY RESTORATION

The expanded team was back in June to complete the removal of the kikyu grass runners invading the Living Links plantings, which we did in a little over an hour. The sprayed kikyku grass is now dead so the

next step is to mulch where we want the new plantings to be.We then walked down the trail to the 2018 planting site, which is a drier site on the side of the hill stretching from the trail up to the Shepherds Bush/Nortons Park boundary fence. This site was dry-ish when we planted and rainfall has been below average until recently, so the plants have had a hard time and many species did not survive. Recent rains revived the survivors and although they are small they are looking healthy. We noticed that survival seemed to be in patches and pondered whether that was determined by moisture supply or good planting technique. We noticed that Correas, Causuarinas, Lomandras, Spyridiums and Melaleucas mostly survived.Surprisingly we found many Indigofera plants about 20cm high not only growing well but sprouting flower buds. The site will be colourful in Spring. The 2018 site has a mystery: some people have systematically removed the plastic tree guards we laboured so long to install last year. The guards are now in small bundles stuck between stakes and dotted over the site (see the photo below). If anyone knows who did it and why, I would dearly appreciate the information.

FA M I L I E S A N D F R I E N D S WELCOME TO THE 2018 NATIONAL TREE DAY PLANTING EVENT

AT KOOMBA PARK (WANTIRNA RESERVE)

Everything is ready for the major planting session of the Friends of Dandenong Valley Parklands for 2018 on Sunday 29th July at the Northern end of Dandenong Valley Parklands in Koomba Park in Vermont South.

Koomba Park has been given low priority since Eastlink was constructed and a concrete cycle track - (Eastlink Trail) - was put through, and it shows. Now however, DVP Parks Vic now have a substantial Government grant to restore it. This is the first of three annual plantings. Our Propagation group has grown all the plants needed. Now we need all of our Friends, their families and their friends to come, plant and help make the restoration a reality.

The site adjoins the Eastlink trail immediately north of the Wantirna Reserve football ground, alongside the trail going towards Boronia Road. To get there:-

• Enter the Park from Mountain Highway after going under the overhead footbridge (the footbridge is before the large sign saying Wantirna reserve) immediately after the traffic lights at the intersection with Burwood Road. • A prominent sign “WANTIRNA RESERVE” points to the entrance. Follow the internal road past the Tennis Club and park in the paved area at the football ground. • From there, walk north past the oval until you reach the trail. The site starts soon after you pass the small lake with a Viewing Platform.

To start the reconstruction of the ecosystem we aim to put 3000 plants in the ground. To achieve this without strain, we will need as many people as possible to come when they can. 1 - 2 hours will be valuable, or you can stay until 3pm. A BBQ lunch will be provided and vegetarians will be catered for.

This will be a family day with everybody welcome to join in with the Friends of Dandenong Valley Parklands in this important activity to restore a park which used to be very popular.

PLEASE WEAR SUITABLE OUTDOOR CLOTHING, AS THERE WILL BE NO SHELTERThis event is part of National Tree Day and full details are on the National Tree Day website at:

MONASH VEGETATION STRATEGY

As many members will know, on May 29th Council decided to release an important document on Monash’s trees and vegetation for public discussion – the Draft Vegetation Strategy (short title).* This

was a victory for many of us locals who lobbied councillors to stop it being shelved indefinitely - despite being a highly valuable document whose preparation cost Council thousands of dollars. We now need to make our opinions known. As with previous policy changes in Monash, there will be public consultation before the recommendations of this document become part of Monash’s policy. As with the Vegetation Protection Overlay, Monash Open Space Strategy, street trees and New Residential Zones, those with a vested interest in removing vegetation will have an opportunity to influence the final policy. Thus, our input is required to reinforce what has been achieved to date. The next stage involves a number of drop-in sessions. Hopefully, properly printed copies of the study will be available at these sessions. If you can, go to one of these sessions and collect a copy of the draft strategy. It is an impressive document: quite lengthy and a great education on the complexity and benefits of tree canopy. (See below for more details about the report.) Feedback sought by 5pm, Wednesday 15 August 2018Drop in sessions: Monday 23 July, 1-4pm at Monash Civic Centre Wednesday 25 July, 3.30-6.30pm at Oakleigh Seminar and Training Centre Monday 30 July, 3.30-6.30pm at Mt Waverley Youth Centre Wednesday 1 August, 3.30-6.30pm at Mulgrave Community Centre Thursday 2 August, 3.30-6.30pm at Clayton Community CentreIf you log onto www.monash.vic.gov.au this item is the first you will encounter, simply click on the panel and all will be revealed. It is vital that we give feed back to Council, as its final decisions will depend on what they hear back from the community. Will the full report be available for consultation at local libraries? We need to find out how to make our opinions known in other ways than drop in sessions (for those not good at talking). Now for some more details about the Strategy: It is an excellent and valuable document, professionally prepared by three firms working in the areas of landscape design, environmental and land management. It includes a history of Monash as a “garden city”, plus a very thorough assessment of the current situation – significant loss of canopy tree cover – together with suggestions for the future, including regaining the tree coverage lost. As we know, despite regulations, despite the VPO (Vegetation Protection Overlay), trees continue to disappear. New gardens seldom contain any trees which will grow to more than 3 or 4 m high. (Indeed, the Strategy authors – sadly - found no difference in rate of tree losses between VPO areas and non-VPO areas – evidence that the VPO is not effective.) Comparisons with other nearby government areas show Monash is lagging in tree coverage: behind Boroondara with 28%, Stonnington (25%), Knox (24%), Whitehorse (23%) and Glen Eira (20%) - all doing better than Monash with 19% coverage. The key aims and objectives of the Strategy are:

• - increase canopy tree cover across public and private land from 22% to 30% by 2040; • - maximise the retention of existing healthy mature large canopy trees on public and private land • - Council to provide a leadership role with best practice tree planting and management on public land;• - community education: promote the health and wellbeing and environmental benefits of trees in the community • - protect and enhance Monash’s green “garden city” character within the contemporary context of climate change and forecast urban growth and change.

In general the aims are to foster a more liveable, resilient, sustainable, and healthy city, to moderate the effects of climate change, and to foster biodiversity. For yet more detail you can look at the document here: https://www.monash.vic.gov.au/files/assets/public/about-us/council/council-meetings/2017-29-august/1.1-attachment-council-meeting-29-august-2017.pdf

Some of its recommendations: The report stresses the need for tall canopy trees (substantially taller than the surrounding buildings) on both private and public land – both for visual relief and for more effective shading (p.78). Large/tall trees under and around power lines are better than small trees, since large trees provide more shade and protection from heat (pp.65, 105). Paved areas whether in private, commercial or public land, should be minimised; where possible permeable paving should be used. There should be no residential side setbacks which are completely paved – all should have fastigate (slim) trees, shrubs or climbers to 1.8 m (p.80). Sustainable water use and passive irrigation are encouraged both for healthy trees and to promote cooling via evapotranspiration

(water evaporating). Use of some deciduous trees on private property to be encouraged, to let some sunlight in in winter (p.93). More large canopy trees are needed in shopping centres large and small.

Comments: Dandenong Creek had lots of litter, plastic bags, caught high on the banks and caught on high fallen branches over the creek, indicating the high water level recently. Unfortunately the litter will remain until the water level rises again and the litter will travel downstream.Blind Creek is showing higher electrical conductivity and reactive phosphate but no ammonium – this seems strange.

GUERRILLA GROUP REPORT

Wednesday 13th June saw the second foray of the new Guerrilla Weed Control group into the Shepherd’s Bush Conservation area. This group has triage as its model, aiming to selectively target

the worst weeds, those present in small numbers, and to deal with them at the most useful time, e.g. when fruiting/seeding. We mostly worked in the Conservation area, and in the nearby bushfire break on the north side of the offices at Parks Victoria. Our main target this time was gorse (See photo below). It is one of 32 weeds of national significance (WONS) as yet only present in Shepherd’s Bush in small numbers. (The situation is much worse down near Jells Park, especially on farm land.) We cut and painted over 30 bushes, a few very large, one already in flower, more in bud. Only very small ones could be successfully pulled out - maybe we should have waited until the soil becomes moister. A large one near the bushfire break had set seeds, now dispersed. We also cut and painted about 15 blackberry clumps there and removed berries. Returning to the Conservation area, we cut and painted a few more large privets and Jerusalem cherries. We took away seeds of blackberries, Jerusalem cherries, and Spear thistles, for disposal in landfill, and had feelings of great satisfaction about being able to make a difference . . . Our next foray will be on Wednesday 11th July.

• Be part of a new Scotchmans Creek local habitat improvement initiative.• Come along to hear about plans to rehabilitate Scotchman’s Creek bushland corridor and find out how local residents can help create homes for Water Skinks and other local wildlife.

Birdwatching walk and discussion of first stage of Skink Link Project; planting activity; social BBQ

10.30am – 12 noon on Sunday 12 AugustMeet at the end of Raymond Court in Oakleigh.

What is the Skink Link?? The project started as a request from Josh Fergeus, a Monash councillor, who asked if a new Friends group could be formed. We came up with the idea of a habitat rehabilitation program for a specific species, the Eastern Water Skink, with the thought it might attract more families and schools to be involved. Location is along Scotchman’s Creek in Oakleigh. We had an information morning and tour a few weeks ago and were very happy to get 70 people come along. We will be running another event on the morning of Sunday 12 August, where people can get involved with some planting and find out more about the project. We are hoping from this we will have enough interest in the program to see if a group can be formed who can then start to co-ordinate more of the activities and planning.

FRIENDS OF DANDENONG VALLEY PARKLANDS NEWSLETTER

Chris and I braved the cool morning to head to the ‘thank you’ given by Parks Victoria on Herring Island. We were disappointed to see no other Dandenong Valley Friends there.

After a brisk 4 km walk along the Yarra, we took the punt across to the Island where the “friends group” should be congratulated for turning what was a quarry into a beautiful quiet space in the centre of Rich-mond. The highlight for us was the trip down the Yarra to see the city skyline. A beautiful day and a terrific “thank you!”
