YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE

Do you celebrate Halloween? It’sfunny how traditions evolve overtime and become a fantasticmarketing opportunity, especiallyfor those flogging confectionaryand costumes. According toHistory.com, Halloween ‘s originslie with the ancient Celtic festivalof Samhain, when people wouldlight bonfires and wear costumesto ward off roaming ghosts. TheCelts, who lived 2000 years ago inthe area that is now Ireland, theUK and northern France, celebrated their New Year onNovember 1. This marked the endof summer and the harvest, andthe beginning of winter - a time ofyear that was associated withdeath. Celts believed that on theirNew Year’s Eve, ‘‘the boundarybetween the worlds of the livingand the dead became blurred’’.People would gather to burn cropsand animals on big bonfires as asacrifice to deities. Halloween’sgone through a bit of atransformation since then, and Idoubt kids care more about thetradition than the possibility offree chocolate and lollies.

Happy Halloween!

‘‘Imogen started swimminglessons when she was 4 and hasbeen receiving funding from theHalberg Foundation for two termsa year since then.

Being in the water has helpedher gain more confidence andgreat satisfaction from developingand accomplishing new skills.

She also loves baking andriding her bike.

‘‘Imogen is indeed a deter-mined and strong personality.

‘‘She certainly has hermoments of frustrations andchallenges but we encourage herthat she can do anything that she

puts her mind to.‘‘The challenge is to continue

finding ways to make thingsaccessible to her that other chil-dren access visually.’’

Swimming was hard forImogen at first, but she’s lappedup every opportunity in the waterand now refuses to leave when alesson is over.

‘‘Initially when she startedswimming, she was reluctant to

put her head under the water.‘‘Now she loves diving down to

sit on the bottom of the pool.‘‘She loves it when she can do

something new.’’Nettie says they are excited to

Whether it steers her to amedal or not, they are happy thatat least it’s helping their little girl

ADD - a hidden superpower in businessCATRIN OWEN

Chris McKinney

has ADD and is

the managing

director of his

own consultancy

business.

Chris McKinney has good daysand bad days.

The Ponsonby resident wasdiagnosed with Attention DeficitDisorder (ADD) when he was 18years old and has been managingit ever since.

ADD and ADHD (AttentionDeficit Hyperactive Disorder)affects 2-5 per cent of all children.

While some children may growout of it, between 50 and 70 percent will have symptoms causingimpairment as they head intoadulthood.

ADHD New Zealand chairDarrin Bull says it is important tounderstand the power of ADHDrather than focusing on thenegatives.

The inaugural ADHD Aware-ness Day is on October 30. A con-ference is being held at EllerslieEvent Centre for parents, teachersand specialists to hear about thelatest research and understandthe support that is available outthere.

McKinney has only come toterms with the disorder in the lastcouple of years and began tounderstand it.

Although growing up withADD, McKinney was unaware hehad it, however he has now learntto manage.

‘‘I don’t think I’ve managed itwell all the time, but I’ve found areally solid way to manage it.

‘‘Fundamentally it comesdown to self-esteem andexercising ... I’ve dropped 15kgwhich has made me feel betterabout myself and exerciseproduces dopamine which I don’thave enough of.’’

McKinney occasionally usesmedication but it’s only when he

gets overloaded at work.‘‘I think I get to a point where I

can’t manage it, Ritalin helps meto do that but it also takes a bit ofme away and that’s why I like toexercise and eat healthy.’’

McKinney thinks the conditionis poorly understood and wouldlike to see increased awareness.

He says he’s been labelled as‘‘lazy’’ but due to the disorder hewill forget things and be late.

‘‘I reckon there needs to beheaps more done with kids and inschools to teach them they’re notbad or stupid and learn toembrace all the good parts andmanage the bad parts.’’

The managing director haslearnt to manage the things he’sgood at and delegate the tasks he’snot.

‘‘I guess I wouldn’t not have it,I love who I am and I like the wayI think and act.’’

Labradors are known for their ninja-like abilities in sniffing out potential snacks.

Top spot for labradorsNICOLE LAWTON

The loveable labrador retriever hasonce again topped the tables as themost popular dog breed in NewZealand.

Figures from the Department ofInternal Affairs show there were41,835 labradors registeredthroughout the country as of May 31- one for every 10 registered dogowners.

The next most popular breed wasthe huntaway, with 31,548 registered, followed by the border collie with22,662.

Fourth most popular were NewZealand’s 18,238 heading dogs, thenthe country’s 18,066 jack russellterriers.

In Auckland, where about a fifth

of New Zealand’s dogs live, dogregistration figures supplied byAuckland Council show the humblelab is the breed of choice fromRodney in the north all the waydown to Franklin.

The miniature schnauzer was thesecond most popular breed in centralAuckland.

The SPCA said there were anumber of reasons for thegeographical distribution of dogbreeds, including current fashions, history, demographics and the area’spredominant land type.

Labradors topped the tablesbecause they were a popular ‘family’dog in many parts of the world andare generally known to be friendly, relaxed dogs that are intelligent andactive.

IN YOUR AREA?Farang. That place has genuinely amazing food.I’m vegetarian so can’t speak to the whole menu -but the ‘Grilled Ginger Eggplant’ with shitakemushrooms starter and the ‘Hawker StyleVegetarian Green Curry’ stand out as specialmeals in a city awash with options.

WHO IS THE KIWI YOU ADMIRE MOST – AND

WHY?To be honest, I feel like we give lots of attention topeople who ‘make it’. There are many people outthere following their passions, and they do it forthe love, not the glory.

IF I WAS AUCKLAND’S MAYOR...

I’d lead like an overlord. Much better to have PhilGoff.

THE SPOT IN AUCKLAND I’D RECOMMEND

TO TOURISTS ISThe Auckland Art Gallery, there aren’t manyplaces you can go these days for free, to enjoy theideas and passions of the people of this city, ourcountry ... and the world beyond.

Marist aim for more AFC winsTORIKA TOKALAU-CHANDRA

Marist’s Kim-an Quinn was praised for her performance in the Bears Classic. PHOTOTEK

Marist women’s softball coachRoman Gabriel is confident histeam can be a threat to biggerteams in the Auckland FastpitchChampionship.

The side has played threegames in the AFC, coming awaywith one win against ArdmoreMarist in round two.

On Saturday, they face Waita-kere Bears at Starling Park at1.30pm.

‘‘We have a pretty young side, there are quite a number of newplayers - nervous still but they’reslowly getting their confidence upby each game,’’ Gabriel says.

‘‘If we can play to our fullpotential, we have a strongchance of being a threat to the bigteams in the competition.’’

Gabriel hopes they can bettertheir results from last year whenthey finished last in the league.

He’s banking on the experienceof senior players like their skip-per, Kara Stirling to motivate theyounger players.

‘‘We have learnt a lot from lastyear. It was a tough time for theteam because we were not readyto play in the premier league.

‘‘This year I feel that we’re abetter team and hopefully it canget us more wins, and a successfulseason.’’

Gabriel says the goal is is toplay consistent ball week in, weekout.

‘‘We started our preparationslate this year - the weather, players’ commitments to studiesand jobs.

‘‘However, we’ve managed tocome together to play every week.

‘‘It is a long season, so I amconfident we can make up for theearlier two losses in the league bythe business end of the season.

‘‘If we can play good consistentball, and it gets us a few more

wins than last year, then we cansay we have had a successfulseason.’’

However, the long weekendproved a tough slog.

Marist featured in the Waita-kere Bears Classic Competition, losing four of their five games toHowick, Western Magpies,Otahuhu and hosts Bears. Theirsole win came against the MtAlbert Ramblers.

‘‘I was really proud with ouryounger pitcher Kim-an Quinnwho did really well against theBears.

‘‘We had a terrible start to thecompetition losing to Howick butoverall the girls performed reallywell, battling against muchstronger and experienced teams.’’

The Magpies went on to winthe women’s division, takingOtahuhu out 4-0.

The Pop-up Globe Theatre willreturn to Auckland and is set torise in the gardens at EllerslieRacecourse at the start of 2017.

The temporary replica of thesecond Globe Theatre in London, which was built in 1614, returnsafter an immensely successfulfirst season that ran from Febru-ary to May 2016. The original sec-ond Globe Theatre was the venuefor many of WilliamShakespeare’s best-known plays, and the Kiwi replica allows theBard’s works to be performed in apainstaking copy of the space theywere written for. The companysold over 100,000 tickets this yearto Twelfth Night and Romeo andJuliet, and extended its seasontwice. Next year the company willdouble its efforts, performing fourplays in a new and improvedtheatre, including Much AdoAbout Nothing, Othello, Henry Vand As You Like It. The companyhas designed an impressive stagefront, a close replica used in theoriginal second Globe. Anotherimprovement to the theatre itselfis the addition of an onion domeon the roof, which will have gapsthat allow natural light to filteronto the stage.

The season runs February 23 toMay 14. Visit popupglobe.co.nz.
