Richmond Beth-El Cemetery Company, Inc.
Cemetery ServicesSunday, October 6, 2019 | 10:30 amParellel services at 2 locations:Richmond Beth-El Cemetery at Forest Lawn B’nai Shalom Cemetery at Greenwood Memorial Gar-densEach year the Richmond Beth-El Cemetery Company, Inc. has a Cem-etery Service the Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Throughout our lives the example our loved ones modeled for us, good or bad, simple or complex, shape our lives forever. Even when they are no longer on this earthly plane, the need to connect, remember, and honor them lives on. One of the many ways we can express that need is through participation in Kever Avot services.
Kever Avot v’lmahot (literally, the Graves of our patri-arch and matriarch) is a service honoring our departed loved ones and their memories. Historically, Kever Avot was a superstitious occasion when Jews would take ad-vantage of the auspicious timing before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, when the Book of Life was open and God’s judgment was open to argument, to ask their de-parted loved ones to intercede on their behalf and make sure that their names were recorded for another year of life.
In our time, Kever Avot is not so much about soliciting heavenly intervention as about reconnecting with our person-al history and honoring those who shaped it. As we look to the future, we should acknowledge the past and our debt to it, especially to those special people who helped mold our lives; who helped make us who we are.
We invite you to join us as we pray together, support one another, and honor the memory of those who have passed at our Kever Avot Memorial Services. Our services are open to all members of the community. Whether your loved ones are buried with us or far away, all are welcome.

Talmud: MOST Tuesdays (except Jewish & secular holidays)Led by Rabbi Emeritus Creditor 12:15 - 1:15 pm, Grove Ave. Kiddush Room, first class September 3
Talmud Class celebrates 25 Years! In 1994, Rabbi Gary Creditor offered a class in Talmud, the vast repository of Jewish knowledge and tradition created by the Bab-ylonian Jewish community. No previous experience in Rabbinic texts was necessary. The class used a vowelized edition along with an excellent English translation. Twenty people attended and the class has continued ever since. The first tractate (section) studies was Berachot, Blessings, which focuses on the creation of Jewish liturgy and its rituals. The next tractate was Megillah, The Scroll of Esther, including a commentary on the text, rituals of reading it and the observance of Purim, but also the reading of Torah and issues concerning the synagogue. The current tractate is Ta’anit, Fasts, which discusses the nexus between the moral and natural worlds, the various types of fasts and their rituals. Throughout the years every possible tangent was explored: background on the Talmud, its creation and personalities, the connection between the Talmudic text and our own times. Every question is honored and encouraged. The Talmud is not written in a linear style, thus opening many subjects, allowing insight into the Rabbinic minds that created the foundation for modern Judaism. It has been a most fascinating journey for every participant.
The class is free and open to the community, but everyone needs to acquire a book (the office assists). There is great comaraderie among the class. Everyone is warmly welcomed.
For other details or questions, please contact Rabbi Creditor through the Temple Beth-El office. We look forward to your joining our most extraordinary journey!

News from Brown Religious School Ramona Brand, Director of Youth Learning
Shana Tovah Tikatevu! A Happy and Sweet New Year to All. With approximately 100 students, our school is both large enough to be lively and small enough for personalized and meaningful education! Our innovative and child centered approach to Jewish learning provides a dynamic environment where Jewish education is joyous, fun, inspiring and spiritual. Learning takes place inside our school building, our synagogue and our greater community.
Traditional learning is balanced with experiential activities, using music, art, nature, literature, and project based learning in order to deepen students’ understanding of our Jewish traditions, values and practices. To learn more about our vibrant Jewish education and our remarkable congregation visit bethelrichmond.org/school to find a registration form. Temple Membership not required for families with students in grades Pre-K through 2.

Parents spoke; we listened! We sent a religious school survey out in the spring and received thoughtful feedback from many parents. We have worked diligently to make changes that will enhance our educational goals.• Optional Wednesday Hebrew for 2nd Graders• New Wednesday class structure: Students will rotate in skill level groups through three with three centers with the Cantor, Rabbi Kraus and Rabbi Pardo for intensive focus on Hebrew decoding and reading, prayer fluency and meaning, Trope/T’fillah/B’nai Mitzvah prep for more comprehensive Hebrew instruction. Level one Hebrew readers with meet with Ramona for class and have T’fillah with the Cantor. • Integrating Jewish Life Cycle, Modern Israel and Jewish Ritual Life electives in the upper elementary Judaics classes (Year Two roll out of the new Curriculum Benchmarks developed in the summer of ’18)• Seventh Grade curriculum will include B’nai Mitzvah prep during selected Sundays and Wednesdays• KOACH will meet primarily at the Beth-El school building with our teen teacher. Our collaboration with the Or Atid teen group will take place several times this year through social events. • KOACH class time will change to 10am -12noon.
Youth Programs Our Youth Groups offer social programs after school hours. Participates have fun while deepening their engagement with each other and to their Judaism. Some events only for the kids and teens, some are for the entire family! Some events will be free, while others will have a small fee or donation to support the activity/project. Banks grant from the Richmond Jewish Foundation, we are pleased to announce the inauguration of the One Tree, Many Branches Interfaith Friendship Club. This collaborative program between Temple Beth-El, Congregation Or Atid, First Baptist Church, Seventh Street Christian Church and the Islamic Center of Virginia will sponsor events that provide an intentional, mindful space where children and families can engage across communities and build relationships that blossom into friendships.
We will gather together for social events that celebrate our unity while honoring our diversity. The friendship club will provide the necessary insights and experiences to dissolve cultural barriers and to spark a communal sense of compassion and understanding. Events will include: • Cultural programs such as: holiday celebrations, food, clothing, language • Art or music projects promoting peace • Games, stories, traditions from different countries, different faith backgrounds • Team building games and activities, or visits to local recreational activities • Joint charitable projects - such as planting trees together or doing a clean-up at an area park

Chesed: KindnessThis year’s Women’s League Torah Fund pin theme of Chesed (kindness) and is circular. It features the word Chesed in Hebrew next to a small heart enclosed by three increasingly large circles in gold-plate. This design symbolizes the heart of kindness, which Jews enact in ever-widening realms of generosity: from family, to community, to the larger world; or from here to Israel. As we read in Psalm 89, may we build a world of kindness.
You can help build a world of kindness by providing financial support to the five-degree-granting seminaries of the Conserva-tive/Masorti movement, all over the world through the Torah Fund Campaign:
The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City, New YorkThe Zeigler School of Rabbinic Studies at American Jewish University in Los Ange-les, CaliforniaSchechter Institutes for Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, IsraelSeminario Rabinico Latino Americano in Buenos Aires, ArgentinaZacharias Frankel College in Potsdam, GermanyThese institutions help preserve Jewish tradition, comprised of learning, worship and acts of kindness, made real in the world. Torah Fund doesn’t buy Torahs ever. It is a source of scholarship and programming.
Please give what you can: every gift is valued! The pin is a thank you for donations of $180+. Thank you for your generosity! Contact Marian Winer at 804-270-7898.

NEW: Milton & Sarah Rubin Torah Restoration Fund For more than two decades, Milton Rubin was the gabbai at Temple Beth-El who greeted those called to the bimah for aliyot and other honors. He alerted readers, through a tap on the table, when their portion was ending, and informed the congregation of the page where each reading could be found. Milton died on August 30 at the age of 98, leaving behind his wife of 69 years, Sarah, three children, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Judging by the crowd at his funeral and those who attended shiva, he was beloved by the community. There is now an opportunity to demonstrate that affection in a manner that would make Milton proud. “I spoke to the family, and we decided that donations to the synagogue in his honor be designated for a fund to maintain Beth-El’s seventeen Torah scrolls,” says Joel Rubin, who grew up at Beth-El but now lives in Virginia Beach, and is past president of Temple Israel in Norfolk. “Besides being the gabbai and a good friend and advisor to Rabbi Creditor, my father served on the ritual and cemetery committees. He took Talmud classes in retirement, so he really cared about Judaism and Beth-El.” “I cannot think of a better way to honor Milton's memory and Sarah than through this fund,” says Rabbi Michael Knopf. “She is a former Beth-El religious school teacher, he was our gabbai, and they both were regular attendees at Shabbat and daily minyan services. I know we will put the money to good use in assuring we have kosher Torahs for years to come.”To donate, go to bethelrichmond.org/rubinfund or call Norma at 804-355-3564 ext. 100.
