JUDGES’ BIOGRAPHIES 2019

FRED C. BASSETTI have been involved with showdogs for 58 years, since 1961. Pomeranians were my major focus while I was actively breeding and showing. In addition to Poms I have also owned and exhibited Poodles, Keeshonden, Old English Sheepdogs, Miniature Schnauzers, a Chihuahua, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and an English Cocker Spaniel. We currently live with a Ragdoll Cat.

I was approved to judge Pomeranians in 1977, and have greatly enjoyed judging dogs for the past 42 years. I am currently approved for all Terrier, Toy, Non Sporting and Herding breeds; as well as Basset Hounds, Miscellaneous Breeds, and Best in Show.

I have judged all over the United States including many National Specialty shows, the Westminster Kennel Club and the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. I have also judged a number of overseas assignments including Australia, Japan, South Korea, Mainland China, Taiwan, Europe, Mexico, South America and Canada.

I have been active in dog clubs from the early 1970’s onward and have held virtually every office, and handled every role possible over the years. I am an honorary Life Member of the American Pomeranian Club, a member of the Mid-Continent Kennel Club of Tulsa, and two of the major judges organizations in the USA. I have been active in mentoring and judges education for Pomeranians for many years, and have given seminars all over the United States, as well as overseas when I have judged. I conducted a week-long Judges Training program in Mainland China during 2014 as a Contractor for the American Kennel Club, utilizing a Translator and dual-language printed materials. I was appointed as Judges Education Coordinator for the American Pomeranian Club from 2008 to 2014.

My professional career was spent in the Information Technology / Data Processing field. I Retired in March 2005 from a 32 year career in leadership roles working for American Airlines, Sabre Holdings and EDS.

I have been married to my wife Janet for 46 years. Janet is retired from a career as a Principal and teacher, and is now working for the Diocese of Tulsa as Assistant Superintendent. We have two grown Sons. Scott is 41 years old, married with one 14 year old Son, one 11 year old Son, and a darling 4 year old Son. He is an Aerospace Engineer. Todd is 38 years old, single and a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

I also have two “Sons by choice,” Abraham & David Cruz. With them I started a clothing company called “Forever Faith” in 2010. This is a faith based, spiritually oriented company with a beautiful Lifestyle Philosophy. Our current emphasis is on promoting Abraham’s Acting and Fitness careers, which are both going very well.

ANDREW BROWNI purchased my first Irish Wolfhound in 1980 and was convinced by friends that she was too good not to show, so I took her to a weekend of shows and she won Puppy in Show at both shows and I have been addicted ever since.

Since that first weekend I have bred and exhibited Irish Wolfhounds under my Crusheen prefix and although not breeding extensively have bred and exhibited 16 Australian Champions.

I have also bred and exhibited Whippets and Skye Terriers, and have exhibited Afghans and Cairn Terriers.

I have been actively involved in Canine affairs as a member of the Executive of the Darling Downs Kennel Club since 1984 and as Secretary for 10 years and President since 2002. I was given the honour of Life Membership in 1994.

I have been on the Royal Agricultural Society Qld. Dog Section committee since 1983 and have been Chairman and Chief Steward since 1998.

I began judging in 1995 with the Hound group and achieved All Breeds in 2009. I have had appointments in all States of Australia and have judged in New Zealand on numerous occasions and also in India, Thailand, Sweden ,Finland, Russia, Bulgaria, Peru, Bolivia, China, and Japan. About Me:My home is in a beautiful country area outside of Melbourne where we have over an acre for our dogs to run free on our property. Currently we have Gordon Setters and Pugs. Our web site www.gordonsetter.com.au and facebook is Michael Gordonsetter

My kennel name is ‘TRISETER’ this name came about from my heavy involvement and owning, breeding and showing three of the Setter Breeds.

I have taken many Gordon Setters and Pugs through to Best in Show at both All Breeds Shows and Speciality Shows. Over the years I have handled many different breeds, with the pinnacle being handling and winning Runner Up In Show from an entry of 291 Gordon Setters at GORDONS2000 (a Gordon Setter Speciality) in England with a Gordon Setter bitch I bred that lived in Finland, this bitches litter brother was exported to the USA and became the #1 Gordon Setter for 2003 and Crufts International Qualifier ’04 ’05 ’06

Previous to the above I thought that my Best In Group 8 (FCI) win with a Curly Coated Retriever at the World Winners Dog Show in Finland in 1998 was one of the highlight of my show/handling career.

In Australia my pinnacle has been breeding and handling the BEST IN SHOW winner at the 2012 Royal Adelaide Show, with Gordon Setter “Supreme Ch Triseter Celtic Ice”.

We have had a lot of success showing our Pugs with winning many Best in Show all breeds and specialties.

DESMOND MURPHYI was born into the Sport. My father and his two brothers were professional handlers, as well as their father and uncle. I have been active in the Sport for 60 years. My very first dog of my own was a Lakeland Terrier, which I got when I was eight years old.

The first twenty years of my life I lived at the Mardormere kennels and was surrounded with over one hundred Whippets and Greyhounds. As a young teenager, I bred Norwich Terriers. When I was around twenty I got very involved breeding and showing Chows, with Sam Draper. I showed many winning Best in Show Chows for about thirty years.

During High school and College I worked part time for the AKC.

I started to judge in 1976. I have only judged a handful of All Breed shows in Canada. I am judged in every Continent of the World. Have judged in nearly 50 different countries. I have judged at the last two World Shows.

I am very proud of starting the Breeders Showcase and Bullygangza at the Santa Barbara Kennel Club. Both of these events have gotten very much International recognition.

SHAWN NICHOLSMy involvement in purebred dogs started in1982 when I attended my first dog show. I quickly developed a keen interest in the sport of purebred dogs. During the summer of 1985 I went to work for professional handlers, Mark and Sally George, in Northern California. I soon realized the sport would become a life commitment and passion. I continued to work for professional handlers, Tim Brazier and the late Mark Shanoff, both offered me the great privilege of working with some truly amazing dogs.

I have bred both Toy & Miniature Poodles in addition to Wire Fox & Scottish Terriers under the Typecast prefix.

I relocated to Calgary where in partnership with Raymond Yurick, we handled many breeds. One of the dogs I showed was Am. Can.Ch. Clarion Camelot Communique, Canada’s top Non-Sporting dog and #10 All breeds in 2008.

In 2007 I purchased the iconic Terrier Type magazine I was the Editor/Owner from 2007-2010, a unique magazine that chronicled the history and achievements of the Terrier since 1961.

I currently reside in Calgary, Alberta where I work for L’Oréal Professionnel in Business Development.

I started judging in 2012, since I have completed the Hound, Terrier, Toy & Non Sporting Group. I am hopeful to apply for the Sporting group this fall. Judging to me has been a natural evolution to add to my experiences in the dog world. It also allows me to remain current with issues of importance to breeders and exhibitors and offers me a means to be involved with CKC.

Since starting to judge in 2012 I have been extremely honored to have been asked to judge several premier Toy Group Shows throughout North America including Mexico. I have also been fortunate to have been asked to judge several independent Poodle specialties in addition to Chihuahua, Toy Fox Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier, Shih tzu, Miniature Pinscher, Chinese Crested, Bassett Hounds and the Italian Greyhound Club of America Regional Specialty in Ann Arbor, MI in 2016.

Being asked to judge a specialty is without question one of the greatest honors I always welcome the invite and am humbled to say the least.

TIMOTHY THOMASI have been involved in the ‘Dog World’ since the age of six.During my early years, I handled numerous Collie Roughs under the family prefix of ‘Ochaye’. I have also shown and handled many other “working/herding” breeds as well as various “toy” breeds – most significantly the Chinese Crested.

My family and I titled 20 Collie Rough exhibits, in all three colours; including 15 which bear our ‘Ochaye’ prefix and 3 which became dual (New Zealand/Australian) Champions. In both Australia and New Zealand, our Collie Roughs have been awarded #1 placing in the National Breed Pointscores. Our most well known Collie Roughs, ‘GrCh Ochaye My Blue Heaven’ and his son ‘Gr/SupCh Ochaye Empire Builder’, were (consecutively) Australia’s leading Collie Roughs from 2000-2007.

From 2010-2014, I co-owned and campaigned Australia’s youngest Shiba Inu Grand and Supreme Champion: ‘SupCh Orienta The Benedict’.

Currently, with my partner, I own and breed Australian Shepherds under my family ‘Ochaye’ prefix. Our breeding has currently produced 7 Champions, including Australia’s youngest Supreme Champion Australian Shepherd at 18 months of age. We also exhibited the No.1 ranked Australian Shepherd and No.2 dog (All Breeds) in Australia in 2019: ‘Aust Sup Ch Am/HK Gr Ch Impacts Pop Rocks’ who achieved 30 x Best in Show awards in just over a year of showing in Australia. ‘Rock’ also won Best Exhibit in Show at the prestigious 2019 Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Aside from showing and breeding, I have held the position of Vice President for the Collie R&S Club of Qld Inc (2003/2004) and was the Club’s Secretary from 2004 to 2009. I became President in 2009 and retired from that position in 2019. In 2019, I was elected as President of the Australian Shepherd Dog Club of Queensland. I Have also been the Vice President and Secretary of the Chinese Crested Dog Club of Qld and am a founding member of the Toy Dog Club of North Queensland.

In 2013, I was appointed to the position of “Chairperson” of Queensland’s Dog of the Year. In February 2015, I was democratically elected (for a 4 year term) to the Dogs Queensland Board of Directors. In 2019, I was appointed as a member of the Conformation Judge’s Board.

In August 2015, I passed my final Judging exam, attainting ANKC All Breeds status and in 2018 I was officially recognised as an FCI All Breeds Judge.

Besides judging extensively throughout Australia, I have had the honour of judging in Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Guatemala, India, Ireland, Japan, Lithuania, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Slovenia, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States of America and Vietnam.

My most notable judging assignments to date include the World Dog Show in Russia (2016), the World Dog Show in Amsterdam (2018) and judging BIS at the Grand Rivers/Ashtabula Kennel Club (2018) in the USA. I also have been invited to Judge at the European Dog Show in Slovenia (2020) and the World Dog Show in Madrid (2020).

Apart from my interests within the Dog World, I have completed two University degrees (from the University of Queensland); one in Law and the other in Music (Honours Class 1A). Throughout 2012, I deferred my University studies, as I was fortunate enough to have been accepted as an Associate to the Honourable Justice John Dowsett in the Federal Court of Australia. I am currently employed by the University of Queensland as a Lecturer, teaching Business, Corporate and Private Law.

Geoff WhitfieldI have been involved with pure-bred dogs since my school days encompassing the many aspects of our sport over the years.

Known mainly for my Kerry Blue Terriers I have also shown successfully Fox Terriers (both coats), Lakelands, Scotties and Cocker Spaniels.

My interest in dogs is shared with my wife, Cathie, and in addition to the above our kennels have been home to Boxers, Rottweilers, American Cockers and Springer Spaniels over the years.

Dogs bred by us have enjoyed success both here in New Zealand and overseas.

I have held an All Breeds Judging License for a number of years now; judging throughout New Zealand & Australia as well as assignments in Canada, USA, Japan, China and the Phillipines.

A Life Member of the New Zealand Kennel Club I am still actively involved in club administration and served for a number of years at a national level as a member of NZ KC Executive Council.

Cathie & I are ‘dog people’ and regularly visit shows overseas to keep up to date with our breeds and the show scene at large.

Bill Walkey - Judge for The Canadian Eskimo Dog Club Of Canada National Specialty

My home is in the beautiful province of British Columbia, Canada.

By profession, I am a computer graphic designer and I have always enjoyed form and function and balanced design, either in nature, or in artistic presentation. I started out in the purebred dog world showing Yorkshire Terriers in 1968. From there I went to Bullmastiffs and thus became very interested in showing and judging.

I spent over 30 years under the “Shayla” prefix breeding and showing Bullmastiffs. I bred the first Bullmastiff to win both the Canadian National Specialty and the American National Specialty in the same year. In my time with the Bullmastiffs, I had many BISS.

I published three books on the Bullmastiff breed, the first of which was the first of its kind for 60 years, and the second one was top selling book on Bullmastiffs in the world. My recent new third version completes the trilogy.

I have been involved in breeding and showing Yorkshire Terriers, Bullmastiffs, Belgian Laekenois, Border Terriers and WH Dachshund in North America, plus earth dog work with Border Terriers and WH Dachshund in Australia, U.S.A. and Canada.

I have judged for over 40 years in many countries including Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Malta, England, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, China, U.S.A., and of course, Canada. I am a Life Member of the Canadian Kennel Club, member of the Canadian Dog Judges Association, plus formerly a licensed conformation judge in Australia, including my qualification as a Master Earth Dog Judge as a member of the Australian National Kennel Council. I am now a Canadian All Breed conformation Judge.

For a while I lived in Australia and while there was honoured to be made Patron of the Bullmastiff Club of Western Australia In my five years in Australia, I judged many times in all of the Australian States and multiple times in New Zealand.

OWNER-HANDLER COMPETITIONSaturday, November 23, 2019 only

In order to participate, exhibitors MUST check off the Owner-Handler box on the entry form. Dogs must be Owner-Handled throughout the competition.

Procedure for judging: The owner-handler judging follows the same process as regular breed judging. For example, if the Best of Breed dog is owner-handled, they are automatically awarded Owner-Handled Best of Breed. If further judging in required, it will take place after regular breed judging. At the Group level, if no owner-handled dog places first to fourth in the group, all owner-handled Best of Breed dogs will be called back into the ring. Again, if the Best in Show dog is owner-handled, they will be automatically awarded Owner-Handled Best in Show.

Professional handlers, assistants, or household members of current handlers may not compete.

DANDIE DINMONT TERRIER CLUB OF CANADA

OFFERS $500 IN PRIZE MONEY FOR JUNIORS

ATTENTION JUNIOR HANDLERS FROM THE SENIOR CATEGORY (AGES 14-17) ITS TIME TO BRUSH UP ON YOUR DANDIE DINMONT BREED STANDARD

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club of Canada, the club is offering a unique competition for junior handlers:

Who will show Dandie Dinmonts only (provided by the DDTCC).

The competition will be part of the festivities with the Aurora Kennel Club and Pet Expo. It will be held in the Pet Expo Ring on Sunday November 24 (Time to be announced)

Each competitor will be asked to work with more than one Dandie to not only acquire knowledge of this charming, unique, endangered breed, but to also gain experience not just with push-button show dogs, but young puppies and adults with little or no ring experience.

Because of the limited number of dogs of this rare breed available for this competition, the classes may be divided. We reserve the right to limit the number of juniors who may participate.

The prize money of $500 will be offered for the following categories.

• Most knowledge of breed history and CKC breed standard: $100 for most correct answers

• Most patient handler with a young puppy or adult that is not show trained: $75 for 1st and $50 for 2nd

• The handler most able to adapt to each dog given to them: $ $75 for 1st and $50 for 2nd

• The Best Overall Dandie handler: $150

Juniors may sign up at the Dandie booth after 10 a.m. the morning of the competition. Breed standards will be available on the day, although we encourage the participants to carefully read the standard and learn more about the rich history of the breed before entering.

ENTRIES CLOSE AT 8 PM (EST) – MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2019

THE JUDGES

NATIONAL BREEDERS’ CLASSICSaturday, November 23, 2019

MICHAEL LOOBY

I have been involved with dogs since 1988 where a partnership was taken up with my wife Esther Joseph of the very well established ‘Triseter Kennels’ where we breed Gordon Setter and Pugs under the “Triseter” prefix. We have also been involved with Tibetan Terriers and English Pointers.

To improve the blood lines in Australia we have used our Australian lines mixed with our imported dogs (both Gordon Setters and Pugs), that have given us a great base to work from.

Our kennel has bred many Australian champions and Supreme Champions, winning many Best in Shows. We have also exported dogs overseas with great success, where some have been Best in Show winners.

I am licensed to judge ANKC Groups 1(Toys), Group 3 (Gundogs), Group 4 (Hounds) and Group 7 (Non-Sporting).

I am honored to be the Life Member and President of Sunbury Canine Club which is the biggest one-day dog show in the southern hemisphere. Iam also involved with 5 other All Breeds dog clubs on there administration/committee side. I have a solid commitment with Dogs Victoria where I am an active worker on Sub Committees.

About Me:

We now live on a stunning country property which Ihave fully renovated to house our beautiful dogs. The property is 65 Km’s North of Melbourne where we have acreage where our dogs can run free.

Esther and I travel extensively and enjoy meeting fellow enthusiasts. We have had many wonderful opportunity and experiences of judging major shows and specialties. Showing, judging and breeding dogs is a great passion.

Judging Experience:

I have judged in every state in Australian, I have also judged in Germany, Switzerland, Thailand, Philippines, South Korea, USA, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan and Canada.

Page 55: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22 to SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24 2019 · (a Gordon Setter Speciality) in England with a Gordon Setter bitch I bred that lived in Finland, this bitches litter brother was

YVONNE YURICK-NORTON

Yvonne essentially grew up in a dog show family. At the age of four her aunt, Charmaine Marshall who bred Great Pyrenees gave them their first show dog. After her passing, Yvonne’s mom continued on with her breeding program under the Ebro prefix and through their passion it has lead to a lifetime in dogs which she enjoys today with her two daughters Faith and Hope.

Yvonne got her first English Setter when she was twelve years old and she still maintains that passion both for English and Irish alike. As a young person she left her hometown of Thunder Bay, and came to the Toronto area where she apprenticed with Will and Allison Alexander for several years.

Having lived in both the east and the west Yvonne now resides back in Thunder Bay, where she enjoys showing in the Minnesota area. She would like to thank everyone for the opportunity to judge such a wonderful event and wishes everyone a successful weekend, but mostly good fun and friendship, no matter where the ribbons land.

SHAWN NICHOLS

My involvement in purebred dogs started in1982 when I attended my first dog show.

One of the

dogs I showed was Am.
