Archeologists and textual experts usually date the writing of the
Gospel of Luke to around 80 AD. One piece of evidence that helps
with the dating is that the gospel contains nearly all of Mark, and
from this we know that it was completed after 70 AD (about when
Mark was written). In addition to having Mark as a source, the
Gospel of Luke shares a large chunk of material with Matthew,
material that appears neither in Mark nor in John. From this we
assume that there was another source for Luke, one that he and the
writer of Matthew used together. Luke also had a source of
information that only he used. Some say that source was the Blessed
Mother.
The evangelist Luke is also the author of the Acts of the Apostles,
which is, in a sense, the second part of the gospel. This is evident
from the very polished Greek of these two books, but more
specifically, from the fact that both books are addressed to
Theophilus, a fellow believer. (See Luke 1:3 and Acts 1:1.) Luke’s
contribution, therefore, makes up more than one-quarter of the New
Testament.
The portrait of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke is of an itinerant prophet
who is attracted to the poor and the outcast. He explains that his
ministry is to them, and he envisions the heavenly banquet as filled
with the poor and disenfranchised. The evangelist draws powerful
portraits of despised members of the society, and much of the wonder
of this compelling gospel is in its address to sinners.
The Gospel of Luke is proclaimed in Year C…and 2013 is Year C in
the cycle.
From the “Hooray and Halleluia” Department…
The Eagle Has Landed Again at St. Peter… St. Peter Boy Scout Troop 323 and St. Peter Parish are once again
enriched by an addition of another Eagle Scout from the parish. It
was a good moment for the Charles Family for sure but also for all of
us in this parish.
Last Sunday, May 19th, Peter Charles, the son of Dan and Mary
Charles of our parish, received his Eagle’s Scout Award. As we all
know by now the rank of Eagle Scout is the highest a scout can
achieve. In fact, one can even put the award on a resume’ in the years
to come. It follows one throughout their life. Peter is a junior at St.
Louis University High School and a graduate from St. Peter Grade
School.
Peter’s Eagle Scout project was an interesting one for sure. He
designed and crafted fifteen wooden stools for nursing mothers to
rest their feet upon while taking care of their children who are
patients at the NICU unit at Cardinal Glennon Hospital for Children.
It was a creative and worthy project. Peter had to secure approval for
the project and the funding to make it happen. He also had to solicit
the help needed in getting the job done in a worthy time frame. And
he did this while being a full time student in high school and a busy
schedule.
Congratulations Peter for this achievement! May God continue to
bless you as you use your gifts to for the service of others.
Have a great week everyone! It is now officially summer as our
grade school dismissed for the summer last Friday. Yippee!!!
I’ll see you in church!

Ordinary Time: Summer
A Sense of the Season What do the words Ordinary Time mean? Dorothy Day said, “The
words ‘ordinary time’ in our prayer books put me in a state of
confusion and irritation. To me, no time is ordinary.” She was
right. The Ordinary in “Ordinary Time “refers to ordinal – counted
time, not to a lack of something to celebrate. The Roman
document, General Norms for the Liturgical Year and Calendar,
says: “Apart from those seasons having their own distinctive
character {Advent, Christmastime, Lent, Triduum and Eastertime},
33 or 34 weeks remain in the yearly cycle that do not celebrate a
specific aspect of the mystery of Christ. Rather, especially on the
Sundays, they are devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its
aspects.”
How do we celebrate “the mystery of Christ in all its aspects”? We
gather every Sunday. Sunday is our original feast day. Christians
have gathered every Sunday – the day of Christ’s resurrection, the
first day of the week – ever since there were Christians.
When we gather on Sundays in Ordinary Time, as always, we hear
the scriptures proclaimed. The Church reads straight through “the
gospel of the year,” either Matthew, Mark or Luke, each week often
picking up where we left off the last week. (We read John during
Lent, Easter, and on feasts.) The first readings, from the first
testament of the Bible (The Hebrew Scriptures), have been chosen
for their relationship to the gospel passages. Many voices are heard
throughout summer Ordinary time. We also read through some of
the letters of the second testament or new testament of the Bible.
The mystery of Christ “in all its aspects” unfolds.
What is the heart of our Sunday celebration? We do our Eucharist;
that is, we do our thanksgiving. We praise and thank God for all
creation; we pray for the whole world, as we remember Christ’s
life, death, and resurrection. We share the bread and wine, & the
body and blood. We are sent forth to be the body and blood of
Christ in our homes, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, our towns,
our cities, our country, and our world.
“What happens in our churches every Sunday is the fruit of our
week. What happens as the fruit of the week past is the beginning
of our week to come. Sunday is simultaneously a point of arrival
and departure for Christians on their way to the fullness of the
Kingdom. This is not ordinary at all. This is the fabric of Christian
living.” (Saint Andrew Bible Missal [Brooklyn: William J. Hirten
Co., 1982]).
The Gospel of Luke Now that we are in “Ordinary Time” cycle C, we will be reading
the Gospel of Luke on Sundays. Let’s talk about Luke.
If asked to name their favorite story from the Bible, most Christians
would probably choose something from the Gospel of Luke. These
stories are indeed unforgettable, and the Christian tradition is
graced by this gospel from Luke’s hand. It is the only one of the
four gospels to describe the angel’s annunciation of the coming
birth of Jesus to Mary, and the visit of the shepherds at his birth; it
is the only one to tell the parables of the Good Samaritan, of the
prodigal son, and the rich man and Lazarus; it is the only gospel to
relate the story of Jesus and the disciples on the road to Emmaus
after the resurrection. In addition to that, Luke’s Christmas story
proclaimed is the most famous and endearing of the account of the
birth of Christ…”In those days a decree went out from Caesar
Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled…”

STS. TERESA & BRIDGET FOOD PANTRY
WE ARE A PARISH OF GIVERS St. Peter parish sent 1281 items of food to the pantry for the
month of May. The wonderful news is that $693.00 was
collected in our new colorful donation cans.
Please see the note from Father Tim Cook below -
We were overwhelmed once again by the generosity of St. Peter
parish. The donation of food that was delivered this past Monday
was such an outpouring of love from your community to ours.
We work hard to assist as many of our neighbors as possible.
You help make that possible. Your donations re-stock our pantry
and even save us the time of travel and expense.
May St. Peter parish know many blessings because of the
blessing you are to so many.
Thank you and God Bless,
Fr. Tim Cook,
pastor at Sts. Teresa and Bridget
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL Thanks to all our parishioners who donated clothing, toys and
household items to us this past weekend. We appreciate your
generosity. We filled the Thrift Store Truck as we always do.
We've come to expect nothing less from St. Peter Parish and we
are never disappointed. Thank you again.
ASSISTANCE FOR THOSE IN NEED . . . The St. Peter Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society
reminds parishioners that emergency financial assistance is
available to parishioners and others who live within the parish
boundaries by calling our voice-mail at 314-289-6101, ext. 2220.
Vouchers for food from local groceries and for clothing and other
items from our thrift store may be provided. In addition we help
with utility bills and sometimes rent payments. A private
interview may be set-up to discuss needs and to preserve the
privacy of those needing help.
TREASURE REPORT AT-A-GLANCE
“The Counselor, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my
name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told
you.”
(John 14:26)
The materialism of our society lures us to concentrate more on
what we want than on what God wants for us and from us. It is
good to know that when we are confused by our stewardship
responsibilities, we can call on the Holy Spirit to show us the
way.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Do not feel worried if you find you have no thoughts at all while
you are before the Blessed Sacrament. Do not feel inadequate
about being holy enough or developing a spirit of devotion. If
you feel numb, down and out, weakened and tired by life...or even
nodding off ...the all important factor is that you are here before
the Lord of Love. He knows you inside-out. He reads your
innermost thoughts and HE LOVES YOU IMMENSELY!
On this Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, consider setting aside one
hour per week to bask in this grace and love of the Spirit before
the Most Blessed Sacrament of His Love.
The following Holy Hours are in need of a partner:
Monday 6:00PM
Tuesday 7:00AM, 2:00PM, 4:00PM, 7:00PM.
For more information, please call Kathy Fotouhi, 821-4347.
PLEASE NOTE:
Eucharistic Adoration will not be held on Monday,
Memorial Day, May 27, 2013.
Eucharistic Adoration will resume on Tuesday, May 28,
at 6:00AM.
PLEASE ALSO NOTE:
Eucharistic Adoration will end at 5:00PM on Friday, May 31 due
to the St Peterfest Parish Picnic. Eucharistic Adoration will
resume on Monday, June 3, at 6:00AM.

Help Needed for Upcoming Beyond Housing Projects Interested in getting more involved in a parish activity? Do you
have some spare time this summer? Your St. Peter Beyond
Housing ministry has some great opportunities. We need
volunteers and support for two important projects in June:
1. Saturday, June 8: "Neighborworks" - a block party/
community engagement event which will take place in Pagedale.
Volunteers are needed to help with prepping and serving food, set
up and clean up, and assisting with a resident survey that is
required of Beyond Housing. We believe the time commitment
will be the morning, perhaps into the early afternoon. This event
will be a great opportunity to interact with some of the people
Beyond Housing serves.
2. Friday/Saturday, June 14/15: Pagedale Family Center
kitchen rehab - the Center's kitchen is in need of deep cleaning,
new flooring and countertops, electrical work and new appliances.
We will need some skilled workers plus others who can assist
generally with cleaning or food and drink for the workers.
Financial or in-kind donations will also be gratefully accepted.
Needs include a gas range/oven, refrigerator, microwave and
kitchen sink. Work will begin on Friday evening and continue
most on Saturday. Commitment for both days is not required;
help will be gratefully accepted for any time you are able to give.

Memorial Drive
TODAY, Sunday, May 26 – 8:00am to 1:00pm
In the Parish Center
Today is our next parish blood drive! This drive is very
important because it will be blood from this drive that is going
to be ready for patients over the Memorial Day weekend.
If you have an appointment, please come as close as possible to
that time. If you do not have an appointment, you will still be
welcomed. Your blood is needed just as much as those with
appointments!
After donating, enjoy some sweet treats, courtesy of McArthur’s
Bakery.
I’m often asked, “What is the rarest blood type?” My answer:
“The type that ISN’T there when needed!” Make sure that type
isn’t YOURS! Donate today!
