Last week five Wise County 4-H delegates, their 4-H Extension agent andProgram Assistant joined Virginia 4-H delegates, Extension agents, and volunteersfrom counties all over the state of Virginia on the campus of Virginia Tech atBlacksburg for the 2015 Virginia 4-H State Congress.

Delegates spent the week competing and participating in educational experiencesto assist them in developing life skills and leadership abilities to become contribut-ing citizens in their communities.

Congress is held each year in June for 4-Hers from around the state to cometogether for learning, competitions in various areas, and lots of fun including dances,ice cream socials, and a carnival.

This year Wise County had three delegates compete in the competition areas atCongress: Laurel Burke, first place, Food Demonstration; Jacob Goodman, secondplace, Animal Science; and Rayann Swinney, second place, Public Speaking.

RAM returns for 16th year July 17-19Remote Area Medical (RAM)

returns for the 16th year to the WiseCounty Fair Grounds in Wise duringthe weekend of July 17-19.

RAM is a non-profit, all-volunteerorganization that provides free dental,medical, and vision care to isolated andrural communities in the United Statesand abroad. The purpose of RAM is toprovide free care to the uninsured,underinsured, unemployed, workingpoor, and others that cannot afford topay.

Services scheduled for July 17-19include fast track medical, eye care,fast track to eyeglasses, dental care,hearing exams and hearing aids, med-ical exams, dermatology clinic, cardiol-ogy, lung clinic, foot and nail clinic,osteopathic treatment, bone density,women’s health and mammograms, sig-moidoscopy to detect colon cancer, anon-site pharmacy, lab and educationalservices.

r All available spaces for denturshave been filled, but people with ill-fit-

ting dentures are encouraged to comefor possible realignment.

r Appointments are required for sig-moidoscopy. Call the Health Wagon at276/328-8850.

r No prescriptions from outside ofRAM will be filled at the on-site phar-macy, and no narcotics will be stocked.Pharmacy Connect will also be avail-able.

r All lab tests require a RAM physi-cian’s referral or order. Persons seek-ing lab work should not eat or drinkanything except water for at least 12hours before the test.

r All patients must bring all pre-scription medications and information.

Registration for services will beginat 6 a.m. daily from Friday, July 17through Sunday, July 19. Patients willbe served on a first come, first servebasis, with the exception of some select-ed appointments, for example for den-tures.

The Health Wagon is the drivingforce behind bringing this valuableevent to Wise. The Health Wagon is anurse-managed mobile unit that deliv-ers free health care to the residents ofDickenson, Buchanan, Russell, Lee,Scott and Wise counties. Hundreds ofother organizations, civic groups, busi-nesses, churches, and individuals havejoined with the Health Wagon to makethis event possible.

Diabetic Foot and NailCare clinic set at RAM

The University of Virginia will beproviding a foot and nail clinic July 17,18 and 19. This service is offered in con-junction with the Remote Area MedicalHealth Expedition (RAM) at WiseCounty Fairgrounds.

Services include foot evaluations foreveryone including diabetics; assess-ment of circulation, sensation, skin andfoot deformities along with toenail trim-ming for thick and normal nails. Footcare education will also be provided.Appointments are not required.
