The Nebraska State Patrol says Zachery Schnable (of Brule) was traveling southbound on country road 360 when he failed to stop at a stop sign and was hit by a westbound semi at the intersection of county road 760. Schnable was flown to Community Hospital in McCook where he died of his injuries. EFFORT TO LEGALIZE HORSE TRACK GAMING Organizers of an effort to legalize horse track gaming operations in Nebraska have dropped off three sets of petitions with Secretary of State John Gale. Those peti- tions will now be sorted, numbered and sent off to county election officials for signature verification. If enough sig- natures are collected, the issues will be added to the general election ballot to be voted on in November. The petitions include an amendment to the state constitution and two changes to state law, paving the way for locat- ing gaming devices at racetracks and taxing the revenue generated. Organizers estimated submitting approxi- mately 130,000 signatures for the constitutional amend- ment, and 90,000 signatures each for the other two ini- tiatives. “Because of the volume of petitions circulated in connection with the three ballot issues, we’ve hired tem- porary workers, who will be assisted by members of the elections staff within my office,” explained Gale. Each petition page is numbered and then they are mailed or delivered to the appropriate county election official for signature verification. Officials have 40 days from the day they receive their petitions to verify all of the signa- tures. “The counties will really be working under a tight deadline, with each one receiving three sets of petitions. That 40 days can fly by fast,” noted Gale. PAVEMENT PROJECT The City of McCook has been notified by BSB Construc- tion that they are ready to begin the pavement project on West "D" Street between West 5 th and West 7th. Be- ginning Monday July 11th, West "D" Street from West 5th Street to West 7th Street will be closed to traffic. This project includes the milling of the existing surface, subgrade prep, placement of asphalt millings as a base and a new concrete driving surface. SPORTS

The MCC Indians Boosters have kicked off the annual fundraising drive for McCook Community College sports. Anyone interested in helping promote MCC's sports programs is invited to send a contribution. The MCC Indians Boosters, Inc. is a non-profit organization formed in 1996 to support the growth and prosperity of McCook Community College through its sports programs. Last year there were approximately 120 full-time student-athletes attending MCC in six sports: men's and women's basket-ball, volleyball, men's golf, baseball and softball. The Boosters provide book scholarship funds to MCC for athletes, publish the media sports guides, assist with the purchase of uniforms and equipment, provide some meals for athletes when the dorm is closed, sponsor special events and promotions and assist with improvements to playing fields and gyms. All levels of contributions are accepted and all donors are listed in the media sports guide if their contributions are received prior to press time (due by Friday, July 22, 2016). The donor levels include Dream Team ($500 and above), Banner Club ($350 to $499), Varsity ($150 to $349) and Team Member (up to $149). Dream Team and Banner Club members get a banner in Peter and Delores Graff Event Center with Dream Team spon-sors also receiving invitations to the Event Center VIP Hospitality room and eligibility for MCC Game Night Tickets.
