Courtney LewisWith clear artistic vision, subtle musicality, and innovative programming, Courtney Lewis has established himself as one of his generation’s most talented conductors. Recently appointed as Music Director of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, a position he will assume in the 2014/15 season, Lewis is also the Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Previous appointments have included Associate Conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra, where he made his subscription debut in the 2011/12 season, and Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where he debuted in the Fall of 2011. A passionate advocate of music education, Courtney Lewis is the founder and music director of Boston’s acclaimed Discovery Ensemble, a chamber orchestra dedicated not only to giving concerts of contemporary and established repertoire at the highest level of musical and technical excellence, but also bringing live music into the least privileged parts of Boston with workshops in local schools. Lewis made his major American orchestral debut in November, 2008, with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, and has since appeared with the Atlanta Symphony, Washington National Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Naples Philharmonic, Alabama Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, and Ulster Orchestra (for a series of BBC Radio 3 Invitation Concerts, as well as on subscription). Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Lewis graduated from the University of Cambridge where he studied composition with Robin Holloway and clarinet with Dame Thea King.

Dee DanielsWhether accompanying herself at the piano, fronting a trio, big band or symphony orchestra, Dee Daniels’ musical career is as varied as her four-octave vocal range is thrilling. She is a unique talent who transcends musical borders when she brings her jazz styling, infused with gospel and blues flavoring, to the stage. Career highlights include Dee being named Artistic Director, in September 2011, of the Frank DeMiero Jazz Festival - a camp dedicated to Jazz Vocals with around 60 participating schools; a nomination for Atlanta Theater’s 2010 Suzi Bass Award; the 2009 receipt of an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Fine Arts and 2008 President’s Award, both from Capilano University; 2003 recipient of the prestigious Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and induction into the University of Montana’s School of Fine Arts Hall of Honor as well as a 1997 University of Montana Distinguished Alumni Award. With the creation of her Symphony Pops programs, Great Ladies of Swing, The Soul of Ray: The Music of Ray Charles, and A Night Out With the Boys, Dee has enjoyed sharing stages with symphony orchestras across the USA and Canada. She has toured with the Nord Netherlands Symphony Orchestra; performed Songs From Disney Movies with the Munich Radio Orchestra and recorded her Wish Me Love CD with The Metropole Orchestra of Holland. A respected vocal clinician, adjudicator, and mentor, Dee presents clinics, workshops, and master classes around the world. In 2001, she established the Dee Daniels Jazz Vocal Scholarship at the Capilano University in North Vancouver, BC. She served on the advisory board of the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival from 2002 - 2008, and has received several awards for her contribution in the field of music performance, music education, and community service.

Hailed by The New York Times as “cutting edge,” the internationally acclaimed Detroit Symphony Orchestra, is known for trailblazing performances, visionary maestros, collaborations with the world’s foremost musical artists, and an unwavering commitment to Detroit. Esteemed conductor Leonard Slatkin, called “America’s Music Director” by the Los Angeles Times, became the 12th Music Director of the DSO during the 2008-09. Acclaimed conductor, arranger, and trumpeter Jeff Tyzik serves as Principal Pops Conductor while celebrated trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard holds the Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Jazz Creative Director Chair. The DSO’s performance schedule includes Classical, Pops, Jazz, Young People’s, Neighborhood concerts, and collaborations with chart-topping musicians from Smokey Robinson to Kid Rock. A commitment to broadcast innovation began in 1922 when the DSO became the first orchestra in the world to present a radio broadcast and continues today with the free Live from Orchestra Hall webcast series. Making its home at historic Orchestra Hall within the Max M. Fisher Music Center, one of America’s most acoustically perfect concert halls, the DSO actively pursues a mission to impact and serve the community through music. Edsel & Eleanor Ford HouseEdsel & Eleanor Ford House Mission: The Edsel & Eleanor Ford House experience is an authentic witness to the past that inspires, educates and engages visitors through exploration of its unique connections to art, design, history and the environment, while celebrating family traditions and community relationships.

Breathtaking landscape, exquisite art, design and architecture, classic automobiles, Ford Family history and memories. These are just some of the treasures visitors encounter at Edsel & Eleanor Ford House — the ideal place to experience the lifestyle of one of America’s most important industrial families. Automotive pioneer Edsel Ford and his wife Eleanor built their home in the late 1920s as a place to raise their young family. The house, its contents and grounds are a magnificent reflection of the Fords’ desire to connect art and design in their daily lives. Today, Ford House is open to the public as a place of inspiration and discovery. A guided tour of the majestic home gives an up-close look at the rooms, art and furnishings. An exploratory walk on the sprawling estate’s 87 acres provides the opportunity to discover trees, flowers, birds and other wildlife. A stop by the historic garage allows guests to marvel at the classic automobiles and the opportunity to design a classic car at the interactive design table. A lakeside bench provides a peaceful respite and the chance to relax and watch the boats go by. Whatever experience you choose, we hope you are inspired by, and engaged in, the environment around you. For more information, call 313.884.4222 or visit fordhouse.org.

Student PerformancesEnjoy music from some of our area’s rising stars, including student musicians Matt Stander, Vincent Provenzano, Joey Cobau, and William Fishwick. The Detroit Children’s Choir will perform selected works on the theme of Love in Many Languages including Singabahambayo, Hashivenu, and Love in Any Language. Founded in 2006, the Detroit Children’s Choir uses the power and discipline of choral singing to bring together Detroit area children and strengthen team building, creativity, social interaction, understanding and connection. What began as a single, in-school program eight years ago has transformed into an organization that now boasts seven different choirs in schools and neighborhoods across metro Detroit. Today, the Detroit Children’s Choir follows a robust curriculum emphasizing sequential music literacy, sight reading skills, vocal technique training, and performance opportunities, including those in partnership with the DSO, and is the only community-wide, inclusive choral music education program in metro Detroit that serves children in grades 3-8.
