The rampage started on Friday evening when Vuthi My Boet buses were stopped by angry residents from ferrying PMC employees to work, proceeding to Saturday and Sunday forcing Palabora Copper to instruct its employees to use their own vehicles to report for duty since the buses had been moved from Boelang depot to the mine. Allegations were made that the owner of the van was trying to extinguish the fire from the trucks while armed with a gun. Even though his actions didn’t threaten the angry mob they quickly grabbed and assaulted him before torching his van with the gun inside it. The Giyani public order unit fired rubber bullets at over 250 Makhushane residents on Monday at around 08:00 while residents were trying to block Makhushane main on the T-junction leading to Moshate and Dairy while police were busy accompanying learners to their respective schools. While police officers and traffic officials were busy clearing the road and directing terrified motorists, two Great North Transport buses carrying over 400 Maseke and Mashishimale residents dropped them off at the Mica R40 bridge at 08:35. Police officers and traffic cops had to run for cover as the angry mob came towards them carrying tyres and petrol bombs, but eight minutes later a police Nyala which was initially stationed at Makhushane T-junction accompanying learners to their respective schools, arrived and police started firing what sounded like live ammunition. Within seconds the mob fled towards the Selati River. Two females and one male were arrested at 08:52 and 08:57 respectively, but the number could still rise due to the police being reluctant at the time to provide exact figures fearful of more revolts. Makhushane, Maseke and Mashishimale residents went on a rampage on Sunday evening burning three trucks, a bakkie and a van at Makhushane fourways.

Allegations were made that the owner of the van was trying to extinguish the fi re from the trucks while armed with a gun.

Even though his actions didn’t threaten the angry mob they quickly grabbed and assaulted him before torching his van with the gun inside it.

After an association with PMC of more than 10 years, RSV, the company tasked with managing the Lift II project opened their site project offi ce in Soetdoring Street, last week. The Lift II project is aimed at expanding the life of the mine. Nick Fouché, attending the opening function of the new RSV offi ce on behalf of PMC, spoke fondly of PMC’s relationship with RSV. “They have been working with PMC since 2011 on the project and drove a strategy that will give a long life to PMC. The feature of RSV that is most appealing is that it is an authentic organisation dealing with people with knowledge of the product/project and this has shown us that this is the organisation we should work with going forward.” said Fouché. He added that PMC would like to show the community that it is open for business and that the operations are transparent and that PMC is trying to do all the right things. PMC is committed to making sure that their contractors work according to a framework and that is where a company like RSV comes in.

The reasoning behind opening the RSV offi ce in Phalaborwa is that they believe that it is paramount to be at the front line. “The project team must be on site, our

experience has taught us that, not only construction management, but also the project management function should be decentralised from the corporate offi ce” says Hennie Read, Chairman of the RSV group of companies. According to Pierre Lombard, General Manger: Projects, RSV has held offi ces on the mine site for the past four years and saw the necessity to move their offi ce into town to show their commitment to the community. In an effort to support the community RSV is planning a training seminar for small businesses to teach them how to manage their businesses and how to do tenders. Contractors managed by RSV also has a mandate to hire local. RSV as a group has a Corporate Social Investment Trust that is used to do greater projects in a collective effort. The Lift II project will see RSV extending their stay for another 7 – 8 years, with a possibility of going into the next project of Lift III.

RSV at its core was established to provide project management and design services around the shaft envelope and infrastructure element of mining activities. They pioneered these services and were the fi rst project house to offer this service to the corporate mining houses.

South African National Parks (SANParks) welcomed the sentencing on 30 July of Bosveld Phosphates PTY Ltd to a fi ne of R1, 450 million cash and a suspended sentence of R1, 1 million for water spillage at the Ga-Selati River in 2014.

The spillage caused signifi cant pollution of the environment, including the Kruger National Park (KNP)’s Olifants River during the summer of 2013/14.

The ruling took place at the Phalaborwa Regional Court.

Bosveld Phosphates Pty Ltd pleaded guilty to contravening sections of both the National Environmental Management Act and the National Water Act through their unlawful discharge of hazardous waste water.

The sentence comes at a time when increasing climatic variability is expected to result in more frequent incidences of uncontrolled surface and sub-surface pollution events into water courses from industrial activities such as these.

“While SANParks welcomes

the judgement by Magistrate Nkuna in this case, changing climatic conditions are an on-going cause for concern around environmental pollution events and their effects on national water security and biodiversity.

Much of the real cost of theremediation of such pollution events is externalised and carried by the environment.

This judgement sends a strong message that compliance to South Africa’s environmental and water management legislation is non-negotiable and management strategies must be put in place by the investors to deal with the changing climate”, said Dr Stefanie Freitag-Ronaldson, GM: Savanna & Arid Research Unit: Scientifi c Services.

SANParks commits to on-going and long-term monitoring and evaluation of pollution events in KNP’s rivers, which are the lifeblood of this iconic national heritage and international treasure

A new committee was elected, with Jason Lin appointed as the new Chairperson.

Titus Malatji, the longest standing member of the Phalaborwa SPCA received a long service award for 15 years loyal service.

Kerry-Lynn Gerber and Patrick Mthimkulu received service awards for their 5 years service boasting about the six Animal Abuse/neglect cases won against among others: Paull Hagg, Nico Bom and Tin Tin.

More focus is being placed on the public for sponsorhips and corporate sponsorships of kennels are now an option for those who want to become involved.

Running costs are escalating

daily with animals not fi nding homes and the public is urged to become involved to educate their communities about the costs and implications of buying a dog at a puppy mill or backyard breeder as opposed to the benefi ts of adopting an animal from a shelter like Phalaborwa SPCA.

Daarom is

SKYDIVING: Bothabelo Bed & Breakfast owner Nomsa Theledi became the fi rst black person to do tandem skydiving in Tzaneen on Saturday.

Her recent success as the show stopper at Vodacom July 2015 can’t stop Nomsa Theledi from aiming higher and higher.

Theledi went for the Vodacom Durban July 2015 and wore stylish attire designed by Bryetta Booysen from Phalaborwa with this year’s theme being ‘a dinner with a captain’.

“I entered for modelling and fashion show and won several prizes. I was the show stopper throughout the event. Some fellows says I made it on varying front pages of publications such as The Citizen while the SABC TV channels including 402, SABC 1, 2 and 3 interviewed me just to give them a background on my attire and style. In 2013 I managed to outclass quite a number of fashion gurus with my attire,” she said.

My love for fashion stems from 2012 and prompted by Cindy Webster from Phalaborwa, who was on the top ten of Mrs SA, added Theledi.

“I gained confi dence having

shed a bit of weight after changing my lifestyle. A special thank you gratitude to my designer, Bryetta Booysen and Ba-Phalaborwa as a whole for their warm and wonderful words post my recent achievements,” noted a joyous Theledi.

Theledi is grateful to Booysen who also appreciated the publicity she received through the attire.

“You inspired me with your persistence. I gave up on designing, but

you kicked-started me again. I am grateful for the God-given talent and nothing makes me happier than to make someone look “Gorgeous” with what God gives me to do,” said Booysen.

Last week Saturday, Theledi became the fi rst black person to do tandem skydiving in Tzaneen.

“I am naturally an ambitious and self driven person hence I keep on pushing boundaries,” said the owner of Bothabelo bed and breakfast in Phalaborwa.

Mashishimale main road is still indefi nitely blocked pending the construction of 16 speed bumps by the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality.

Only 12 speed bumps were constructed by Monday afternoon and the word we received from municipal technical offi cials on site is that no more speed bumps will be erected as the Municipality feels that the initial demanded 26 is way above the limit on the 4km road.

A meeting convened on Sunday morning by the ANC Sub-Regional leadership in Phalaborwa with Speaker David Maake and Mayor Sono in attendance failed to bring any positive outcome as residents remained resolute citing that the

road will only be reopened once four speed humps and sign boards are erected.

Mashishimale residents went on a rampage blocking and digging up the main road after a speeding taxi hit a teenager and left her in a critical condition on 15 July.

In Phalaborwa Herald’s previous editions, Mashishimale Unemployment Forum and community leader, Caster Mashele said the Municipality and provincial Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure department have intentionally ignored their plight for many years.

“It is more than a decade since the road has narrowed. It is no longer a

two-way road and two buses cannot move on this road. Four people have died and many hit and runs have occurred on this road in the past two years, but the Municipality kept on promising us they will come and attend to it,” said Caster Mashale.

Mashele further said they have decided to close the road pending the erection of around 26 speed bumps.

The taxi driver, whose identity is known to Phalaborwa Herald, is said to have hit the teenager next to Stonkhane bar lounge at around 18:00. After the accident the driver fl ed the crime scene and within a couple minutes residents had infested the area.

SPEEDHUMPS: BPM employees busy on Saturday morning construc ng the 12th speed hump on the 4km Mashishimale main road next to Lebeko High School.

SPEEDHUMPS: These Machidi boys at Mashishimale says they need speed humps on the main road to reduce frequent accidents on their main road.
