Grade 5 Public Speaking Festival
On Tuesday 14th August we invited 35 Grade 5 students from across our
region to take part in a Public Speaking Workshop. With such a rich
culture in excellence in public speaking it was great to see our students
pass on their skills to support the Grade 5s. Thank you to Renae Barnett
and the English team for creating this unique opportunity for students in
our area.
Planning for 2019
The school has begun its planning for the 2019 school year. Over the
upcoming weeks we will be asking students about their intentions for next
year in terms of returning to school. If you are aware that your son/
daughter is not returning to Oberon High in 2019 can you contact the
school to inform us of this.
School Uniform
It has been a very cold start to the Term but it is important that all
students are still attending school in full school uniform. It is great to see
so many of the students wearing our new puffer jackets to keep
themselves warm. Students are not to wear hoodies or other jackets over
the top of their school uniform. A reminder that it is not acceptable to wear
school tracksuit pants or leggings all day even when students have a
Physical Education class on that day. Your support with this is most
appreciated.
After lengthy debate with School Council, Oberon will be updating our
school uniform and changing suppliers as at the start of Term 4. Our new
uniform supplier PSW, has been brilliant to work with and pleasingly the
cost of new items has reduced and quality is improved. While most
changes are minor, the girls’ summer uniform is completely different with
it predominately being blue. Other updates with the uniform will be
warmer rugby tops, a soft shell jacket (replacing the old spray jacket),
slight amendments to the kilt and a minor design change with the polo
tops.
We believe these changes will support the students to be more
comfortable at school. We have long been frustrated that the uniform was
not warm enough in winter and these updates help address this. As with
any uniform changes there is a 3 year uptake period so the old uniform is
still suitable for any current students until 2021. Samples of the new
uniform will be on display in the school foyer in the coming weeks. (see
the school’s web page for the sample storyboard)
Any new students who start in Term 4 will need to either purchase the
new uniform or can purchase 2nd hand uniforms, if available and all new
Year 7 students in 2019 will start the new year in the new uniform.
Please don't hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions.

School Production – “The Curse of the Mummy”
Students have been working hard in the lead up to this year’s production
“The Curse of the Mummy”. The show will run from Thursday 6th till
Saturday 8th September in our school’s auditorium. Tickets are now on

Year 7 & 8 student led conferences
On Wednesday 29th August, Year 7 and 8 Parents/Guardians will have the
opportunity to participate in the Student Led Conferences whereby their
children will be able to showcase a portfolio of work that has been
undertaken across the various subjects. The conferences are an
opportunity for the students to showcase the work that they have been
undertaking in class with their parents. These conferences are not
designed to replace the Student/Parent/Teacher conferences that are held
in Terms 2 and 4, which allow for discussion with your son’s/daughter’s
teachers on their progress in each of their subjects. Bookings are now
available via the parent portal.
Year 12 Student/Parent/Teacher conferences
It was great to see so many Parents/Students take advantage of the
opportunity to speak with their Year 12 teachers on their progress on
Monday 13th August. The conversations allowed family groups to be
informed of current progress, but what should be the focus between now
and the exam period which begins on Wednesday 31st October with the
English exam. If parents were unable to attend and still wish to speak
with their son’s/daughter’s teachers please feel free to contact them at
school.
German Poetry Competition
Congratulations to all the students who competed in the Geelong round of
the German Poetry Competition. Oberon showed its dominance by having
four students make it through to the State Finals last Saturday.
Congratulations to Raegan Cameron, who finished 2nd in her age
category, and Clare Geddes, Phoebe Connolly and Noah Josefsen on the
way they represented our school. A huge thank you to Ms Liz Ray who
sacrifices so much of her own time and continues to provide amazing
opportunities for our students.
Chess Kids Tournament
On Tuesday 14th August we had 25 Oberon students along with 100
students from 10 other schools compete in our School Library for the
Chess Kid’s Tournament. It was great to see so many students competing
with many matches going right down to the wire. Well done to our Open
Team (4th), Middle Years Team (5th) and Jordan Redman as our highest
individual place getter in 9th. This opportunity wouldn’t have been possible
without the work of Miss Louise Monotti who co ordinated the entire event.

PARENT OPINION SURVEY - REMINDER
As part of our Annual Review process Oberon High School conducts a survey of parent opinions about how well Oberon is meeting the needs of students. This year all surveys are being conducted online. If your family has been randomly selected to take part in this survey, you will have received an email from the school, with a unique link to take you to the survey page. Could you please complete the survey online as soon as possible, so all data can be collated, and measures taken at school to reflect your needs and those of your student. All responses are anonymous and will be processed by the Department of Education, then results forwarded to our school. Surveys close on 26th August. Thankyou for your cooperation in giving us your feedback. Any questions, please contact Bronwyn Knight or Josh Baker on 5243 4444.
LOST PROPERTY
A variety of lost property is on the table in the Sick Bay waiting to be claimed. Some of the items include un-named Oberon uniforms - rugby tops, spray jackets and polo tops (new and second hand items). Other non-uniform items include beach towels, hoodies, lunch containers, swimming gear, jewellery, lots of drink containers, books, etc. One of the new Oberon Puffer Jackets (un-named) is also awaiting collection in the General Office. We have endeavoured to find the owner of this but have been unsuccessful so far. If your son or daughter have lost any belongings please ask them to check the table in Sick Bay or come to the General Office if they have lost a puffer jacket.

YEAR 7 & 8 STUDENT - LED CONFERENCES On Wednesday 29th August, all Year 7 and 8 students will be presenting a digital portfolio to highlight work and learning completed in classes in 2018. The work is to be presented on their iPads and they will lead a conversation with their parents/guardians about each of the work tasks displayed. The conference will be centred on their learning, how they will act upon feedback received and how this relates to their Semester learning goals. Students have just begun to put their portfolio together and the onus will be upon the student to choose work samples to include.
This is a celebration event and designed for students to showcase their efforts in Year 7 & 8, not to discuss behaviours and everyday class matters. The conferences will run from 1:30 pm - 6:30 pm on this day, with all students still to attend school on this day. A letter has been sent home with your son/daughter with further information. PICKING UP AND DROPPING OFF CHILDREN AROUND SCHOOLS
AN IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE FROM THE CITY OF GREATER GEELONG
For the safety of children, parents are reminded to take care and obey parking signs when picking up or dropping off children around schools. Council’s Parking & Information Officers regularly patrol school areas during start and finish times and motorists detected breaching parking regulations risk being issued with a Penalty Infringement Notice.
Remember, as soon as you stop to let your children in or out of the car, you are deemed to be parked. You do not have to leave your car or turn the engine off to be fined, so please ensure you are parked in a legal parking area.
At children’s crossings, you must remain stationary at the stop line while any person (including an adult or the supervisor) is on the crossing or the stop sign is displayed. Do not let your child alight at this time, ensure that they wait until you are safely and legally parked.
If you breach a parking regulation the Parking & Information Officer assigned to monitor the crossing will usually record your registration number and details, and the Penalty Infringement Notice will be posted to you within the next three days.

Go! Go! Go!
On Tuesday 21st August, students in Unit 2 and 4 Outdoor and Environmental
Studies had the opportunity to participate in a Downhill Skiing and
Snowboarding experience at Mt Buller. For many students, it was their first
time seeing the snow.
After an early start (3:30am!) students travelled by coach to Mt Buller resort.
Once students were fitted with their skis/boards they participated in a lesson
according to their level of ability, enabling them to optimise their access to the
alpine environment in future.
A number of students had to experience their first chair lift ride to get to the
lesson and had plenty of fun trying to get off! There were definitely a few
memorable stacks! The morning was spent focussing on further developing
skills before meeting for lunch. Afterwards, students had the opportunity to
split into groups and take on a number of other mountain trails.
Despite low visibility towards the summit, we were very lucky to experience
great skiing conditions with a base coverage of 155cm of natural snow,
northerly winds around 11-15km/h and temperature around -2 degrees.
The experience has provided valuable first-hand experience which students
can make links to in the classroom including concepts of sustainable use and
the development and management of the Alpine National Park.
Students in Unit 4 OES studies are also learning about the conflicts that arise
between interest groups over the use of the Alpine National Park, in
particular, the issue of cattle grazing in the Alpine National Park so this was a
great chance for them to understand the importance of the high country in
this debate.
Thanks to the leaderships team and support staff
in helping to get this experience off the ground.
Thanks also to Mr. Rob Neal for helping to
facilitate the experience for the students.

TOUCAN APPEAL 2018 Oberon is once again supporting the Geelong Food Relief Toucan Appeal. Donations of non-perishable food items can be placed in the Toucan box outside the General Office. Thank you for your support.
Term 3 has been a busy one for winter team sports taking place including
Hockey, Basketball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Netball and Soccer.
The participation from students across all year levels has been
outstanding. A number of sports have had to stage tryouts to because of
such high signups for these sports. I would like to extend a big thanks to
the staff who have also volunteered to coach these teams and make their
experiences possible.
Oberon High School has experienced success on many levels at the
sports, through displaying excellent sportsmanship on the day of the event
as well as at competition level.
Congratulations to the Year 7 Boys Hockey and Basketball teams who
have made it through to the finals stage of the Western Metropolitan
Region in October. Please check the Sports notice board for the dates of
these events.
Congratulations also to the Senior Girls Hockey team who were
undefeated on the day but came runners up based on percentages (there
was no score in their last match).
Congratulations also to:
Intermediate Boys Badminton Team – Runners Up
Yr.7 Boys Table Tennis – Runners Up
Yr. 8 Boys Table Tennis – Runners Up
Sign-up sheets for Term 4 Sports (Yr 7 and 8 and Intermediate Baseball,
Softball, Table Tennis and Cricket) are now up on the Sports notice board.

To help prevent accidents around the bus stop, schools, parents and industry members are being asked to teach students:
When waiting for the bus students should:
stay well back from the edge of the road
not run or play around near the bus stop
wait for the bus to stop completely before they approach.
When travelling on the bus students must:
stay seated, if a seat is available, and seat belts MUST be used if fitted
not distract the driver
keep the aisle clear of bags.
When walking to/from bus stops and getting off the bus students should:
stay well back from the edge of the road and wait for the bus to leave
never cross in front of, or behind, the bus
only cross the road when the bus has gone and they have a clear view of the road in both directions
never wear earphones or talk on your mobile phone when crossing a road, as you may not hear approaching traffic.
When picking up your student/s from the bus wait on the same side of the road that the bus drops them off and meet your student/s at the bus stop. This reduces the risk of them running across the road to meet you without checking the road first.
