P&C NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Welcome back to our last term for 2017. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our new Principal Mrs

Griffin. This term is promising to be a fabulous one with three P & C projects in the calendar already! This means there

are many opportunities for you to join in. Where can you help out?

The next P & C meeting will be on Tuesday 31st October, 7pm in the School Library. This is a new time to

previously advertised. We will be organising the upcoming Book Fair and Fun Run so it will be great to have as

much support as we can to ensure smooth running of our fundraising events.

Our next Book Fair is in Week 7,

Wed 22nd - Fri 24th November. The theme is Reading Rainforest – Go Wild for Books.

Book Fairs are a lot of fun and the children love looking at the books. We need people

to help in the morning and afternoon with selling of books and helping the children

make their selection. If you are able to help with this please contact Sarah to find out

more, the roster is ready to be filled and the best spots always go early.

There is a very exciting event coming up for our school to participate in. This term the P & C will

be holding a Colour Fun Run Fundraiser. This will involve paint, white t-shirts, fundraising,

prizes, laughter, a sausage sizzle and everyone is invited to join in! Keep an eye out for more

information as it comes home over the coming weeks.

Lastly, sadly our Friday lunch orders have had to be cancelled due to not having a driver to collect and

deliver them each week. If you have 45 mins free on a Friday, a reliable car and are able to help with this, please

contact Sarah.

I look forward to working with you all this term.

KINDY CLASS REPORT

The children have begun Term 4 with their usual wonderful enthusiasm and sense of wonder. Over the past two weeks we have learned about the Amanda Young Foundation and Meningococcal disease with Mrs MacDonald. What we have learned is that it is very important to wash our hands, cover our mouths if we cough or sneeze, and not to share eating utensils such as spoons with other people. Our Talk for Writing topic for Term 4 was introduced this week and we are all very excited to ‘Go on a Bear Hunt’ in Kindy. We have made some magnificent maps of the story already and we will use the maps next week to go on a hunt around the school!

PRE PRIMARY CLASS REPORT

Well done to Pre Primary for doing a great job presenting the assembly. In Literacy we have been interpreting and responding to visual texts. We have been looking at the differences in imaginative writing and informative text. Using our created informative text, a recipe, we followed the given procedure to make fairy bread. Finally we got to the best part of our lesson: eating the fairy bread! We also had a visit from Cara who works with the City of Stirling. She spoke with the children about recycling and reducing the amount of waste going to landfill and the different bins in their area and what they are for.

PRE KINDY ORIENTATION

On Wednesday, 18th October we had our First session with the 2018 Kindy Kids! It was

lovely to meet lots of new parents and children who will be joining our school

community for 2018 as well as see some familiar faces and siblings of previous students. The series of

sessions are extremely

important as they help

reduce separation

anxiety for the children

and their parents as well as increasing the

children’s familiarity

with the Kindy, the

teachers and the school.

LEGO CLUB

What a fantastic way to begin Osborne Lego club! The group of children who attended on Tuesday were well behaved, enthusiastic about their creations and worked together across the year 1 to 6 ages with ease and inclusiveness. Ms Pittard and I were extremely happy to have Mrs Cerin, Mrs McAuliffe and Mrs Griffin all come to help us out with the inaugural session. It looks like this is going to be a fun and creative time for all who attended. I am already looking forward to next week! Ms Ballam

YEAR 1 CLASS REPORT

A big thank you to Kyati Ranparia’s mother for coming in to class to tell us how her family celebrates Diwali. It was so interesting. Kyati wore her amazing traditional dress. We admired the pearls and the clever stitching and intricacy of the mixing of the fabrics. The student’s have settled in to the last term of Year One. Keep in mind some consumables like glue sticks and erasers may need replacing. In Science, the class is enjoying wondering what a Palaeontologist does for a job. The children have heard what the scientists have estimated the noise of different dinosaurs roaring and talked about how they worked that out. In Mathematics we are looking at patterns of shapes and numbers and working on knowing how to count by 2, 5 and 10.

YEAR 2 CLASS REPORT

Welcome to our final term of the year! This week we have been learning about Diwali. In Art we contributed to the making of a Rangoli ** which is displayed in the school library, make sure you check it out! Mrs Bansal who is mother of Arnav in Year 5, visited our class and taught us how to make Coconut Latoos, a special sweet eaten at Diwali. They were delicious, thank you Mrs Bansal! In Maths we are counting money so next time you go shopping, talk to your child about the costs of the items you are purchasing and see if they can tell you what notes and/or coins you would need to buy them! We have also started studying a persuasive text called ‘No Fast Food’. Not only is it helping us to learn about the structure and techniques of persuasive writing but it also ties into our Health

program for the term where we are learning about healthy and unhealthy choices and lifestyles. Phew, we are busy! **Rangoli is an art origininating in India in which patterns are created on the floor in living rooms or courtyards using materials such as coloured rice, dry flour, coloured sand or flower petals.

YEAR 3 CLASS REPORT

We all enjoyed our first Edu Dance lesson! Everyone tried so hard and had a lot of fun. We can’t wait to see what the final dance will look like. In Maths we have been learning about Fractions. We got to cut a chocolate bar in half and had to make sure that both halves were fair and even. The best part was getting to eat the chocolate bar! We have also been folding and cutting shapes into halves, thirds and quarters and made a Fractions poster to practise writing different fractions. Last week we started our science topic of “Day and Night” and learnt how big the different planets of our solar system are and the order of them from the sun. We made up silly sentences to remember the order. Then we used our knowledge of fractions and planets to make colourful planet pictures. We are looking forward to another busy term.

YEAR 5/6 CLASS REPORT

The Year 5/6 class has had a busy start to the term. We would like to welcome all our new students and hope that they find their time at Osborne Primary rewarding. Just a friendly reminder to those that haven’t paid yet, please do so as soon as possible. The Year 6 students are already busy making plans for their graduation at the end of the year and the Year 5s are keen to lend a helping hand. Please make sure that your Year 6 child is enrolled in high school so that they don’t miss out on valuable transition programs.

YEAR 4 CLASS REPORT

Mr Tsironis, our new student teacher, is going to be with us for the next five weeks. On Tuesday, we went onto the basketball court to learn about time. We used team work to help find out the time on the human clock. Some people had to be the hands and others were the numbers. In Science, we are studying Earth and Space andlooking at rocks and landforms. We had the Waste Wise people from the City of Stirling here on Monday, talking about our three coloured bins, and how we need to reduce the amount of household rubbish going into landfill. Edu Dance has started and it is going to be fantastic.

MUSIC NEWS

Welcome back! This week we have had a wonderful time exploring the customs of celebrating Diwali. We have listened, danced and played to festive music from both the Indian classical tradition and the Bollywood Bhangra styles of music. Students from Year 1-3 tried out some Tabla playing techniques, and a number of students gave us a glorious display of some typical Bhangra dance moves. Thank you to all those students who shared some of their own experiences of Diwali with us.

We’ve also been working on the 2017 Music Count Us In song, ‘Shine Together’ which we will be singing as a whole school on Thursday 2nd November. The Year 1’s have begun to learn Auslan sign language actions for the song. We loved the expression of Auslan! Year 1 learn sign language Year 2 practising Bhangra

ART ROOM – URGENT REQUEST This term we are planning on designing some beautiful sculptures using

recycled materials in art.

If you have an empty water bottles (any size) we would love to use them.

They can be dropped off to the art room any time. Thank you

WASTE WISE INCURSION

On Monday, the City of Stirling's School Waste Education Program came to the school to talk about Recycling and how we can reduce landfill. Landfill is such a big problem and we as community, need to try and reduce the amount of rubbish we put in the red bin, which ends up in the ground. Our green bin is for garden wastes only, not food scraps! The yellow bin is for clean bottles, cans, plastic bags, paper and milk cartons.

Use your 3 bins correctly.

At Balcatta SHS we are entering a new

and exciting phase where we are

looking at building an engaging and fulfilling program in Music and

Instrumental Music into the future.

This will involve two periods a week of

Music plus an Instrumental Music class

provided by Instrumental Music School

Services (IMSS). Activities in the Music class will be varied, but will include

listening and composing skills and

looking at the elements of Music and how they interact.

Students who have been involved in the IMSS instrumental

lessons in primary school will be provided an opportunity to continue their lessons at Balcatta Senior High School from

2018. Those who have learned an instrument privately may

be considered for a position in our program where this sits

within the guidelines and policy of classroom numbers and

available instrumental teachers.

Further information on this exciting new program will also be

available at a Music and Instrumental

Music Information evening at Balcatta Senior High School

on Tuesday 24 October 2017 at 6.30 pm.
