YIPIRINYA SCHOOL
YEPERENYE YEYE AKWEKWE
Next Friday 25th June, we will have special guests visiting
Yipirinya School from the Melbourne Football Club. Many
exciting things are happening at school and we always look
forward to welcoming families and friends that would like to
come and sit in on the classes and activities. It has been a
great week here at Yipirinya School. Thank you to all the
families for preparing your children and sending them to
school. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday all students
in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 were tested in The National
Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is
an annual national assessment. All students in these year
levels are expected to participate in tests in reading,
writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and
punctuation) and numeracy. I want to thank the teachers
for preparing the students and congratulate all those
students who came to school and did their very best.

We are preparing for our Family Day on
Thursday 28th June our Theme for the day will
be celebrating NAIDOC and I look forward to
meeting all the families and enjoying a great day.
This week the Year 1 and 2 classes went
on an excursion with the Language
Teachers from the Yipirinya School
Language and Cultural Centre. The
students enjoyed finding different bush
medicine and bush tucker. They found
all sorts of things like alangkwe bush
banana, arrerthe thats used as medicine
for rubbing on the chest and bathing,
Needle bush shell to use for painting,
which the students will do back in the
class room. They also found atnurrenge
which is a very important plant used for
lots of different purposes like welcoming
ceremonies, cleansing the bodies spirit,
smoking houses after someone has
passed on. Most people know it as the
emu bush or the scientific name is
eremophila. The emu bush is also great
as a sealant and antiseptic for sores.

AWARDS Welcome to Year 3 (Lapaji) class
We have had a busy time in the classroom. We are
learning all about numbers and how to add 1, add
10, take-away 1, take-away 10. It has been very
challenging but we have tried our best.
In History this week we have been learning about
Dreaming Stories and Miss Annie came in to our
class and shared a story with us. We then had to
paint a class picture to demonstrate our knowledge
of the story.
Also, we have taken part in the NAPLAN testing.
I am pleased as the classroom teacher that the
students that were here did their very best work.
So, as a reward along with Year 5 and Miss
Meredith we took the class down to Araluen Park
for a well-deserved outing.
Thank you for reading our class letter of the
week.

T.STEVENS, who was

“E.RUBUNTJA came up
with the name for Yipirinya
School when talks started
happening to build our own
school for our Aboriginal
children to feel comfortable
at. The name came up when
we were having Tangentyere
set up in 1978. Through this
it began to spread out into
the town camps just to get
started.” Information taken
from Yip. school newsletter 1988.

Kids love to jump - skipping, off the
couch, the tables or playground, from
one object to another. Jumping is
great for our health - many of us will
remember jump rope for heart back in
the 80s. Jumping uses our gross motor
skills and its so important our kids are
taught to land safely. Landing on both
feet and using arms to balance is a
skill. Take the kids out to play this
week and join in finding objects to
jump off or jump over. Ask your
littlies to pretend they’re frogs,
kangaroos and leaping lizards and
challenge their imagination at the
same time. Dont forget to have a
movement snack break from your desk!
