AWARDS Welcome to Year 3 (Lapaji) class

We have had a busy time in the classroom. We are

learning all about numbers and how to add 1, add

10, take-away 1, take-away 10. It has been very

challenging but we have tried our best.

In History this week we have been learning about

Dreaming Stories and Miss Annie came in to our

class and shared a story with us. We then had to

paint a class picture to demonstrate our knowledge

of the story.

Also, we have taken part in the NAPLAN testing.

I am pleased as the classroom teacher that the

students that were here did their very best work.

So, as a reward along with Year 5 and Miss

Meredith we took the class down to Araluen Park

for a well-deserved outing.

Thank you for reading our class letter of the

week.

Celebrating 40 YEARS looking back

HAROLD FURBER is

a current member of the

Yipirinya School Council and

a former staff member.

Below is a photo of Harold

Furber (below right) and

KEVIN BUZZACOTT at

the 15th Anniversary of

Yipirinya School. The photo was

taken in 1993. Kevin once was a

school Bus Driver who later

became the Yipirinya School

Director in 1992 and 1993.

The name Yipirinya comes

from the local caterpillar

dreaming story. The dreaming

word in Arrernte is Altyerre

and Jukurrpa in Warlpiri,

Pitjantjatjarra, Luritja and

other language groups.

T.STEVENS, who was

one of the founding members

of the School, once said that,

“E.RUBUNTJA came up

with the name for Yipirinya

School when talks started

happening to build our own

school for our Aboriginal

children to feel comfortable

at. The name came up when

we were having Tangentyere

set up in 1978. Through this

it began to spread out into

the town camps just to get

started.” Information taken

from Yip. school newsletter 1988.

JENNIFER INKAMALA is

the longest serving staff member at

Yipirinya School. The above photo

shows Jennifer working in class with

Students in 1992. Jennifer started

working for Yipirinya back in the

mid 1980’s when the School was

located at Tangentyere Council.

Today Jennifer is the Western

Aranda Language Teacher who is

very dedicated to her work and the

School. We appreciate the great

knowledge Jennifer shares in

educate our students.

HOW DID YIPIRINYA GET IT’S NAME?

Kids love to jump - skipping, off the

couch, the tables or playground, from

one object to another. Jumping is

great for our health - many of us will

remember jump rope for heart back in

the 80s. Jumping uses our gross motor

skills and its so important our kids are

taught to land safely. Landing on both

feet and using arms to balance is a

skill. Take the kids out to play this

week and join in finding objects to

jump off or jump over. Ask your

littlies to pretend they’re frogs,

kangaroos and leaping lizards and

challenge their imagination at the

same time. Dont forget to have a

movement snack break from your desk!
